MY population of women would not be considered Vulnerable, because they are no longer involved in the criminal justice system, they have completed all community control sanctions and no longer have a probation/parole officer and they are no longer on probation/parole.

Validity and Reliability
INTRODUCTION
In quantitative research, we refer to the concepts of validity and reliability to tell us how well the study measured what it was supposed to measure and how much we trust the accuracy of the results. We address these same basic issues in qualitative research, but they are referred to as credibility and dependability, respectively.

Validity as a Unifying Concept
The process of reviewing literature and interpreting research in light of other published research studies revolves around the concept of validity in research design. What is validity? There is not a unified consensus regarding the definition of validity in research design (Pedhazur & Schmelkin, 1991). However, at its core, validity in quantitative research involves confirmed truth, or how accurately an instrument or study manifests what it is purported to examine (Edmonds and Kennedy, 2017).

Reliability in Qualitative Research
Just as credibility and transferability roughly correlate to the concepts of internal and external validity in quantitative research, reliability has its counterparts in qualitative research as well. We refer to these issues as confirmability and dependability. Reliability, with its emphasis on replication, does not apply well to qualitative human services research studies since each is unique—something that is intrinsic in the process. 

In this unit, you will evaluate the credibility and dependability within a selected qualitative research article from your Review of the literature. And likewise, you will analyze and evaluate the properties of reliability and validity within a quantitative investigation you have identified in your Review of Literature within your topic of interest. You will be asked to continue to develop your literature review.

CASE 5 Hiring Between an African-American and a Caucasian Woman
Denise, 22, an African-American woman, and Bonnie, 23, a Caucasian woman, are the two top applicants for a computer technician job in a major data-processing center. The center has about 10 percent minority employees and about 30 percent female employees. Both women seem to be equally well qualified except that Bonnie is both prettier and more outgoing than Denise. This particular job doesn’t require the person who fills it to meet the public very much, but it takes place in a large office in which almost everyone is Caucasian and in which relations among employees are particularly important because of the constant pressures of the job. If you were the personnel manager, whom would you pick for the job? Why? What should this person’s criteria for employee selection be, and in what order of importance should these criteria be placed? Why? To what extent should the personnel manager be concerned about affirmative action or reverse discrimination in this situation?
The special challenge in this assignment is play acting. That is, you must analyze and propose a solution for your chosen case as if you were a nonconsequentialist (rational) ethicist or a virtue ethicist.

To begin your case analysis:

1.    Name the case chosen and in narrative format, outline the main facts of the case.
2.    Discuss the context, history, and general background to this sort of case. Here extra research is encouraged. Raise issues that any ethical consultant should be aware of when dealing with this "type" of case.
3.    Repeat the specific question(s) you were given from the text about the case. You may add extra questions of your own here.
4.    Make your proposed solutions to each answer as one that an ethical consultant employing your assigned ethical theory would propose. Shortly after Urban VIII’s elevation to the Papacy, Galileo had six meetings with him. According to a report from one of Urban’s confidants, Urban spoke to Galileo in words along roughly these lines:

Let us grant you that all of your arguments [in favor of Copernicus’ hypothesis] are sound and that it is entirely possible for things to stand as you say. But now tell us, do you really maintain that God could not have wished or known how to move the heavens and the stars in some other way? Then you will have to concede to us that God can, conceivably, have arranged things in an entirely different manner, while yet bringing about the effects that we see. And if this possibility exists, which might still preserve in their literal truth the sayings of Scripture, it is not for us mortals to try to force those holy words to mean what to us, from here, may appear to be the situation. 

Paper topic: 

Your assignment is first to explain Urban’s argument and then to critique it. 

Advice and further requirements:

First give the argument step-by-step. Don’t rush through this part. Fill in any steps that you think Urban needs in order to arrive at his conclusion from his premises. Notice that Urban begins with a claim about something being “conceivably” so and ends with a conclusion about what we should believe about what is so. What is the argument connecting them supposed to be? 

Then offer the best objection(s) to it that you can find and that Galileo could have offered (given his other beliefs) and explain whether Urban’s argument withstands these objections. 

In the course of explaining Urban’s argument, explain whether this argument, if accepted, would have any implications for scientific theorizing in general (not merely for the Copernican theory). This is an important part of your assignment. 

If you depend upon any source (other than our class discussions), then you must indicate the sources that you use. Your references can be of any format as long as they include all of the relevant information (author, date, title, publisher, publication location, page number – or website – or…). If you quote anyone directly, then you should explain the quoted passage in your own words. 
But I am not expecting you to use any source outside of our class. This is not a research assignment; it is a thinking assignment.

Your assignment should occupy no more than 2 pages of 8 ½” x 11” paper. It should be typed, double-spaced, with one-inch margins all around. If I find that you are making the same grammatical mistakes as I have noted in previous papers, then your paper’s grade will be severely penalized. So be sure to check my comments on those earlier assignments to ensure that the same mistakes do not appear in this assignment. 

Proofread your paper very carefully. You should check it several times to make sure that you have not missed anything.

Make sure that you explain fully in your own words any philosophical, scientific, or other technical terms that you use.

If you include diagrams in your paper, then those diagrams do not count towards the 2-page limit. (In other words, the diagram can be on a third page.) Likewise, any bibliographical references do not count towards the page limit.
