Realism and Anti-Realism

Realism in cinemas and in movies can be referred to as representing a subject matter truthfully with sincerity and avoiding artistic convention, implausible, supernatural an exotic elements (Alston, 2002). Whereas anti realism is where a subject matter is represented with much artificiality and many supernatural elements are used in the cinema. I prefer realism in a cinema because; first of all the characters are believable, and they are always observed in a daily life. The costumes used in a realistic movie are normally authentic. Therefore, it is easier to interpret and believe what is being presented in a movie.  Stage settings and props in a realist cinema are often believable.   

            Realistic plays are often ordinary and not heightened but rather use a day to day speech which is easily understandable and believable. Realistic plays are also psychologically driven because they often represent the lives of the audience and for that reason, they are important as a learning setting. It is easier for the audience to identify with the characters and situations in a realistic cinema (Alston, 2002). Therefore, the simplicity of the realistic cinema makes it easier for the ordinary person to understand and it is important for the young brains. This is because, what is presented is real and can be understood and interpreted without more inquiry. The examples of such movies include “the one I love” by McDowell, “the science of sleep” by Michel Gondry. Such movies blend reality and one is able to explore all what is happening all throughout (Alston, 2002). In other words, realistic films are all about showing the actual world and they deal with social issues that affect every body in a daily life.  Therefore, I prefer realism because it is a good setting for learning.
