**All documents can be found in the American Yawp Reader, volume II**
(http://www.americanyawp.com/reader.html).
Read and analyze ONE of the following primary sources related to a particular historical period or event
from the list on the second page. After reading the source, write an analysis of the source and how it helps
us to better understand the events of the past.
Use the following questions to help guide the writing of your primary source analysis:
1. What is the document about?
2. Why was the document written?
3. Who is the author? OR Who are the authors?
4. When was the source written?
5. What was happening during the time it was written/created (the historical context)? This
information will come from the textbook chapters and supplemental materials.
6. How does the time that it was written/created help us understand the author’s perspective?
7. How does the source’s bias affect our understanding of history? The author’s bias could be their
job; relationship to the event (directly affected or bystander); position in society (i.e.
wealthy/middle class individual or poor/working class?); political affiliation; etc.
This assignment should be written like a formal essay with an introduction and thesis statement, body
paragraphs, and a conclusion.
Primary Source Analysis Guidelines
1. Your primary source analysis should make an argument (thesis statement) about how your source
relates to the historical events it is responding to and the time period when it was created. The
thesis statement should appear at the end of your introduction.
2. You should provide direct evidence from the source you choose to support your argument.
Paraphrasing and summarizing is okay. Avoid using more than two or three direct quotes. Cite
your sources using the same in-text citation format you have been using in your online
discussions (Chapter title, section number) and/or (Video title).
3. Your paper should be three to four pages, typed, doubled spaced, in 12-point Times New
Roman font, with one-inch margins. Please make sure you include a heading on the first page
with your name, course number, and title of your paper (your title should be creative and reflect
your argument). Points will be taken off if you do not follow the formatting directions.
4. You DO NOT need to do any outside research for this assignment. notes from the American
Yawp online textbook and supplemental materials should provide enough context to answer the
prompt.
