The Job

During the over 2 decades that Steve spent as an officer of the law in New York City Police department before retiring in 2003, he made many arrests in a day many of which were assaults, robbery with violence, and criminals involved with gun dealing. Some years ago before joining the police force, Steve was an editor in a small town where he used to ride at night with officers on patrol. The book provides a more detailed on the issues and the kind of life that Steve underwent through his career as a police officer in New York for more than 20 years (Osborne, 2016). After having his time in the department, Steve retired and went to begin telling stories about his life and what he has experienced being a white cop in New York. Steve shared his experiences on the moth show on the radio to the listeners trying to convince and tell them how hard and different things are in the real life of being a cop.

The Job is a 14 type collection essay which is a nonstop learning of a guy who always dreamed of becoming a police officer in his middle years. The journey was never easy since there were difficulties such as the issue of being undermined and mocked by the police society who were before him but still made it as a police officer. Never the less, Steve never lost hope of becoming the best he can be in the police service. He retired a lieutenant and a commanding officer of a gang squad in Manhattan. This is a form of encouragement to the society and more so the people who feel intimidated by the kind of environment they find themselves since nothing good comes from being comfortable in life (Osborne, 2016). Osborne is one of the greatest storytellers through crafting the memory into a perfect word to word tale which is full of drama, heart and more humor.

In the think fast essay, Steve remembers when he was a rookie in his squad car on patrol. On these fateful moments, he spotted a man who was getting ready to drive a knife into another man’s body leaving him dead or with serious injuries. At this time, the man was already close enough to stab the other man and he made a judgmental call that almost made him get torched by the angry mob. Instead of getting his gun ready to prevent the man from committing murder, he ran over the perpetrator and the angry mob wanted to make him pay for his actions. The angry mob threw bottles towards his squad car without getting to know what happened (Osborne, 2016). He was saving the man from being arrested and spending most of his time behind bars for killing another man. Steve explains how the society and especially how the society does not care about the situation that forced or contributed to such an action and is always ready to judge with the first action on site. In this sense, Steve tries to educate the society that things are never the way they seem and there is much that is hidden and others displayed but nothing is really as it seems.

Steve shares much of his life with the listeners and the readers about many of his fun, fumbles, tragedies and triumph moments while working as a police officer. He also celebrates the fact that he had never been forced to pull out his gun and fire at anyone while making an arrest. Working as a police officer is hard since not at all times any lawbreaker will accept going down without an argument but in his life, he feels that he accomplished much by not being forced to use extra force to the criminals. At times he used to buy his prisoners a hot dog while taking them to the police station (Osborne, 2016). One of the major tragedies includes a time he was chasing a criminal in a tunnel which almost ended his life. This is an incident where he missed being hit and killed by a train as he chased the person to make the arrest. From the taming job, Steve was transferred to Manhattan where he continued doing his job until being made a commander of a gang squad.

A person dying in the square park of this town in the middle of the night as a result of being shot was considered a natural death. Square Park is one of the parts where drugs were the order of the day and after dark, it was time to hunt for the drug dealers. Fighting against drug dealing is a dangerous job but he persevered and ensured keeping it real (Osborne, 2016). On September 2001, this is the day that he and his colleagues will never forget after the terrorist attack. Steve decided to leave the police force when he got a case to work on and which involved drug dealers and more interesting the drug lords. After getting important information on how to make the arrest, he felt not interested and this being the biggest case in his career he decided to quit and retires from the police service.
