Writing Assignment #8: Researched Proposal
The researched proposal serves as the culmination of the writing you have done on your chosen research topic, allowing you to synthesize the academic writing skills that you have been developing over the course of the semester.
Rhetorical Knowledge: Who you will write for, and why
Your audience will be the members of our class. Consider that your audience is likely aware of the general outline of the issue at hand but doesn’t understand its complexity. Two of your peers will read your rough draft and offer suggestions, and you will present your research in a poster presentation.
Your purpose is to propose a solution to a problem related to your chosen research topic. This problem/solution should be local, meaning that it is focused on a campus/city/regional issue. You will answer the question about what action should be taken to solve or at least improve the problem. Your essay should help your audience understand the complexity of your chosen issue and to persuade them to agree with your reasoning and proposed solution. Refer to the “Spectrum of Purposes” handout on Blackboard.
Subject Knowledge: What you will write about
Your general research topic will be what you chose at the beginning of the semester.
1. You will need to first identify a problem related to this topic in your local context. For this essay, the more local the problem and the solution are, the better. For example, examining your issue at the Chaffey-, city-, or county-level is preferable to proposing state-, nation-, or world-wide solutions. Your research for this component will probably consist of listening to others, interviewing people, reading newspapers and college or local government websites, and possibly attending college or government meetings.
2. You will then research specific ways this problem has been addressed elsewhere in order to develop ideas for your proposal and to provide an example of a successful solution.
3. Finally, you will suggest ways that successful solutions could be implemented in your local context.
You will use at least six additional sources to become knowledgeable about your issue. A majority of your sources (at least three) must be peer-reviewed academic sources; the balance may be from national or local newspapers, magazines, the websites of educational institutions and government agencies, and so forth.
