This is an essay on the following prompt:

1) Consider the opening sentence to Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina: All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.

We see three main characters in The Glass Menagerie. Each is unhappy, but unhappy in their own different ways. Make an argument about how each character is unhappy—be specific in individualizing their unhappiness. Your essay must rely on textual evidence from the play and from class lectures.

You must have previous knowledge on  this Tennessee William’s play!

Do not go outside of class readings, lectures, and discussions for information. Going on-line for any reason (i.e., to look up websites like SparkNotes) means you are violating these instructions.

Instructions given by the professor:

In a minimum of 1750 words, write a formal academic essay of in response to one of the prompts listed below. Be sure to use 12 point Times New Roman font, 1” margins, and double-space everything. Format your header and page numbers according to the guidelines posted on Blackboard. Include a Works Cited in MLA format. The minimum length of 1750 words excludes direct block quotations.  Papers will be penalized if they are short of the minimum length requirement. Do not attempt to justify a short paper by claiming that you don’t want to “pad” your paper; instead, adjust the scope of the paper to achieve the length requirement.

Your essay must include an argument (thesis) that clarifies the goal of your paper and makes a claim that is not obvious or uninteresting. Your job is to teach the reader something. Remember that you must use examples from the text(s) in ways that go beyond class lectures (you are required to draw upon lectures, but I also need to see evidence of original thought). This essay is analytical, which means that it must include an engaging introduction with a clear thesis, development of analysis that includes textual support, and a conclusion.
