Everybody Hates Chris

Questions and Topics We Can Help You To Answer:

The media that I choose to write about was the show Everybody Hates Chris. This show touches on race, class, and gender. The that topic I would make from this show is how black people are seen as the lower class in the 80′s in Brooklyn. Teacher comment: Great topic. It should give you an interesting look at the lower class black experience in the 80s. When doing this, make sure to be clear about the context within the show (it′s set in the 80s) and context in which it was made (much later). Perhaps at the end point out some differences between this show and later portrayals of Black families. Paper instructions: For this assignment you are writing an argumentative essay about the representation of difference in a specific media text. For this essay you will: Pick one or a combination of the identities discussed in the class, any combination is allowed. Pick a media text or series of media texts (a movie, a tv show, YouTube series, Instagram hashtag, a franchise, etc) to analyse. Don’t be too broad or ambitious (don’t do a whole season of a show, randomly select some episodes), but make sure you have enough material. Analyze your source material based on you chosen themes. Form a thesis that you will then attempt to prove. (Women in X show are portrayed as Y which is bad because a,b,c)   Hand in your topic and text for approval (on canvas) by 10/18   Organize your essay in the following way: Introduction Set up your topic (Representations of people with autism are few…) and your source material (Three autistic youtubers who have been doing this for 5 years). Explain why you think this topic matters. End with your thesis and a brief outline of the paper (The three Youtubers provide a more nuanced representation of autism than mainstream media, which helps people understand other people with autism better. To show this I will first give examples of diversity amongst the three individuals as shown in their videos. Second, I will discuss their videos in contrast to television portrayals. Lastly I will explain how this can help other people.) Body Try to follow the outline at the end of your introduction as much as possible. Don’t make a point that is not in that outline. Use at least 5 academic sources (I can help you find these if needed, or you can contact our librarian Kristina Devoe at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) Use examples from your media text to strengthen your argument (When YouTuber X talks about THIS THING, it directly opposes THIS common portrayal of autistic people, which is seen in shows like Y (author, 1990, p. 10). ARGUE TOWARDS YOUR THESIS. Make sure your examples are relevant to the point you are trying to make. Conclusion Restate your thesis Summarize your argument. Don’t make any new arguments or introduce new information. End on something memorable   FORMAT: 8-10 pages (not more, not less), this does not include your references Double-spaced Margins should be one-inch on all sides Use any standard font (arial, times new roman, calibri) in 12-point size Use APA or MLA guidelines for citing references. Mention which citing style you used at the top of your paper. You don’t have to write an abstract if you use APA. BE CONSISTENT.
