Grading Criteria
In order to receive full credit for the discussion, you must answer the questions posed completely, including your reasoning for your answer. This will be 50% of your grade. 25% will be your engagement in the conversation with other students, and 25% will be grammar and citation (as needed)
For a top score, you must respond constructively to at least two other students. More extensive participation will be noted.
Specifications
Post your opening response to the question early in the assignment period so that others have time to respond to you.
A thoughtful opening response will consider the ways virus like agents spread and can affect the embalmer.
The Prompt
Respond to the following discussion question for this module: Viruses can be a danger to the embalmer, however so can virus-like agents. Prions are infectious proteins. Discuss how prions could affect not only the embalming process, but the embalming environment.
1. The first person you have to reply to Is
Prions are contagious proteins in the human body which causes diseases such as, spongiform encephalopathies that leaves holes in the brain tissues. During the embalming process protein is used to stop or reduce decomposition in the human corpse however, prions will make the embalming process difficult because, the proteins are already contagious and compromise before the embalmer can used them. Moreover, prions can create some issues in the embalming environment because, it cannot be destroyed by autoclave and it can be transmitted by body fluids like blood or exposure to the tissues. However, when embalming a case with prions embalmers must properly protect themselves by wear proper protective gears, use disposable material to cover embalming table and used disposable instruments along with collecting the blood in a sperate container for disposal.
2. The second person to reply to is Prions or transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) are a family of rare progressive neurodegenerative disorders that affect both humans and animals. They are a type of disease that causes that causes the brain to fold abnormally. Standard disinfection procedures and routine embalming solutions are ineffective against “prions”; however, studies show that chemical solutions and physical processes involving bleach, sodium hydroxide, or autoclaving can inactivate the prion.
