As we read through Twilight of the Elites by Christopher Hayes, we are looking at an argument that is focused on complex issues, resulting in a complex argument. Complexity is not a bad thing even if it can be challenging much of the time. Part of why you are at college is so that you can learn to grapple with complex ideas; this prepares you to be an informed citizen of a democracy and it will help to be successful in your chosen field. For the essay you will need to combine analysis, evaluation, and synthesis.
Your Task:
Write a 1600 word essay that makes a rhetorical analysis of Hayes’ argument. How does he use of the rhetorical triangle, is it effective or not, and why? What does your rhetorical analysis of this text tell us about how we can more effectively structure our own arguments?
You will use logos, ethos, and pathos to frame your discussion of the author’s argument. In other words, you will explain whether the parts you found convincing were an example of the author using logos, ethos, or pathos effectively, and why you found them convincing. You will do the same for the parts of the argument you found unconvincing.
You will cite evidence from the text to support the evaluation and analysis you are making
You will synthesize what you have learned from your evaluation and analysis into an arguable and specific claim about how to write more effectively. It is important that you add this third level of significance to your thesis and your argument.
