For this week's discussion, I want you to focus on Aristotle's treatment of the ethics of rhetoric. While Plato saw rhetoric as inherently unethical, and Isocrates saw training in rhetoric as a means of producing ethical students, Aristotle seems to treat the subject as ethically neutral, i.e., it could be used for either good, or bad. Locate in the readings two or three places where Aristotle touches on the ethics of rhetoric (trust me, there are many), explain what you think they mean, and draw a conclusion about what he sees as the ethical responsibilities of a student of rhetoric. Are we free to use rhetoric in whatever way we see fit, or does Aristotle seem to have some ethical agenda in mind? Make sure to support your answer with plenty of concrete examples from the readings.
