Consider that you might be the HR Director of a 500 employee firm one day (you may select whether it is for-profit or non-profit/public or private). Discuss some of the greatest legal pitfalls you see ahead in the next ten years. What laws are missing that could protect your organization from liability….which are missing that would protect your employees from harm (safety, discrimination, job insecurity etc.). Review and discuss current laws in place that you are satisfied with from an employment standpoint, and why. Discuss when and why you would rely on your firm’s legal counsel and when you would go it on your own. Keeping in mind that every call to council costs the firm….but limits your liability. Finally, what areas of HR law make you most anxious – and why. What will you do going forward in this field to maximize your employment law knowledge and minimize that anxiety?
