This is basically a summary of your proposal and it includes your research question. Page 3 Introduction (subheading) (1 page): Describe the research problem that will be the focus of your pilot study proposal and discuss why it is significant. (be sure to cite sources that provide empirical evidence of the problem). Be sure to include your research Question(s) and Hypothesis or Hypotheses: Your specific research question(s) should be stated in your abstract and at the end of your introduction. The hypothesis statement should follow your research question. The hypothesis should answer your research question. Page 4 Literature Review (subheading): This section should be 2 to 3 pages. It is a review of the literature on your topic. This is a summary of other studies that are related to your proposed research topic. In this section you will summarize studies’ methods and findings. You will present a discussion of the most important research and theoretical work relating to proposed research topic. As you describe each study you should address the following: Describe the subjects in the study. How many subjects were in the study? What instrument was used to obtain information? Was it survey, field study, or interviews? What theories are discussed and applied in the study? As you summarize your articles for the literature review you should summarize the findings and identify similarities and differences between studies that you are reviewing and discuss. If there is something that you believe your study will build upon because it is missing from the literature be sure to discuss. Page 7 Methods Section (subheading) (1 -2 Pages). This section describes how you will conduct your study. Regardless of the type of pilot study you plan to do, you need to indicate how you will carry out your pilot study so others may judge its viability, its worth, etc. You should include a desсrіption of the subjects (or participants), the measurements, the data-collection methods, and analysis/analyses. Outline how you are going to conduct your own pilot study on a topic in criminal justice. Be sure to include the following: Statement of Your Hypothesis: A hypothesis, as defined in your eText, is “an expectation about the nature of things derived from a theory. It is a statement of something that out to be observed” in your study if your theory is correct. Subjects for study: Describe the subjects (people) for your study, considering carefully the type and number you need. Explain your method of selecting your sample. Discuss the subject(s) in relation to your research question or hypothesis, to availability, and to your research design. That is, you need to identify the subjects and make clear whether they will be available and how you will reach them. This section typically answers the following questions: Who will you study in order to collect data? How do these subjects relate to your research question(s)? How many people will be included? What geographical area are you focusing upon? Measurement Describe the measure (survey, interview, or field study) you intend to use and explain why you have selected this method (has this method been used previously to study this topic?). Your research question should guide you in your method selection. A discussion of measurements generally considers the following questions: What are the key variables in your study? How will you define and measure them? Do your definitions and measurements draw on or differ from those of previous research in this area?
