Police Corruption Accountability of the Police The Future of Policing in America

Project 1

Chapter 1 Project :

Determine the purpose of the police in a democracy or free society, and identify the seven principles that were established in the “Youngstown Accord.” Explain how the police would function under each principle to provide policing services to fit the ideal of each principle.

Chapter 2 Project:

Explain how understanding history can help us understand how changes in policing can and will occur, and how that knowledge can be used to aid in shaping policing in the future. What lessons have we learned throughout our history that can help us not to make the same mistakes in the future? Give specific examples of the events leading to these lessons, and the steps we need to take to prevent them from happening again.

Chapter 3 Project:

What is the reason that our policing system was designed with the primary responsibility for police protection being placed with local governments instead of the federal or state government? What are the strengths and weaknesses of this system of policing? What is the reason our policing system was initially designed to be a local responsibility in the first place? The military has rarely been used for local crime control. Why is this so? When, if ever, would the use of the military be acceptable to address local crime problems?

Chapter 4 Project:

Do you believe that law enforcement workers in the United States should be unionized? Why or why not? What impact have police unions had on American policing, and how can labor and management work together to assure the public of effective law enforcement? Has the Police Officers Bill of Rights discussed in your text provided fair protection to police officers, or are they so restrictive, they prevent management from investigating police misconduct? Why or why not?

Chapter 5 Project:

Over thirty years ago, the President’s Crime Commission recommended that all police officers have an undergraduate baccalaureate degree. When the commission made this recommendation, there was very little research on policing (either on police work or police officers). We have learned much more about policing over the past thirty years. In light of research therefore, discuss the commission’s recommendations.

Is the Crime Commission’s recommendation a good strategy for improving policing? What are the underlying assumptions of this approach?Does it improve policing? What evidence do we have that it improves policing? What evidence do we have that it has not improved policing? What is your opinion on whether education has or has not improved policing?

Chapter 6 Project:

Are police officers different from the general population? How? Why? What are the different perspectives of police behavior and personality? Which perspective do you think is most accurate? How do attitudes and behavior affect the activities of a police officer? A department? How does it affect police-community relations?

Chapter 7 Project:

In 1972, the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department experimented with different levels of police patrol. Their experiment and findings are discussed in your text. Discuss the significance of that study to American policing, how the experiment was structured, and its findings and implications. Apply your understanding of the experiment to a discussion of how you think your community should be patrolled (highly active patrol strategies versus lesser levels of patrol), and present your findings to your classmates.

Questions you should answer include:

Do the police need to respond immediately to every call for service? Describe the type of calls police should respond to immediately, and the type of calls they can respond at a later time. Finally, describe some forms of differential police responses to calls for service, and how the responses could best be used to free police officers up for directed patrol activities.Should citizens accept that fact that he police may not respond immediately to their call of a minor theft? How long should a citizen have to wait for a police officer if they see drug dealing or prostitution taking place in front of their home?Should citizens expect police to respond immediately to every call for service, no matter what that call is?
