The English in JAMESTOWN, Virginia, established in 1607, did not bring in the first Africans as slaves until 1619. Africans were taken to the Caribbean as chattel slaves perhaps as early as 1512, while they were next brought into the NEW WORLD by the Portuguese in Brazil next, no later than 1540 in this case. So you can see just how late in the game it was before the English began to import West Africans.
By the time England took over the area of the CHESAPEAKE BAY, where Virginia is located, the chattel slave system had been in operation throughout the entirety of the continent for 100 years.
