Children spend their formative years in public school; they are shaped by the curriculum (formal,
hidden and null), the teachers that deliver that curriculum, and the communities within which
their schools are nested. As a result, schools play an enormous role in shaping the values, skill
sets and attitudes that young adults adopt as they leave their K-12 experience and go on to
college or join the work force.
As the tragic events of the last few weeks have demonstrated, schools must do better in their role
of shaping citizens: we, as educators, must do better.
Over the last 10 weeks we have explored a number of issues ranging from inclusive education to
curriculum, including: standardization, zero tolerance, teacher preparation, student and teacher
centered teaching philosophy etc. all of this was explored against the back drop of the Ecology of
the Child.
【PROMPT:】
“concentrating on 3 of the areas we have explored this term, and using a combination of course
material (readings and lectures) and your own student experience in the k-12 education system,
please write an essay suggesting how we could change the education system to help move us
towards creating a truly fair and equitable society.”
