The quantitative method has grown to become the most important methodological approach in contemporary international relations scholarship, but this turn promised to produce a scientific-like understanding of global behavior and has not produced the hoped-for results.  We sacrifice in-depth knowledge and rely on techniques that provide short-cuts employed to understand reality.  The problematic outcome is that we neglect some elementary components of research, such as theory.
