1. Please identify at least three citations in which Socrates presents his indispensability to the city.  
   
   2. How does Socrates articulate this indispensability?  Does this indispensability contribute to or endanger democracy as a collective project?  Please notice that he never uses the term “indispensability,” but as discussed in class his arguments clearly indicate it.

   3. Please identify at least five citations proposing a public morality in Machiavelli’s analysis.  By public morality I refer to ideas and policies that promote the public welfare and may even respect the individual’s property and family.
   4. Why are the citations you choose indicative of a public morality?

   5. In chapters 10 and 21, Machiavelli seems to refute his view of human nature.  You may remember that he sees human beings as egotistical, fickle, eager for gain, etc. (chapter 17). Identify and cite relevant passages in chapters 10 and 21 and explain why they contradict his conception of human nature.
