This article is a compelling commentary on the misuse of statistics to create what the author refers to as “advocacy statistics.” Advocacy statistics are a misuse of science and of statistics to promote a particular point of view and/or to deliberately misinterpret data to promote a politically popular or politically correct ideological point of view.  The article is provocative, even though, it is dated. 

In combination with your Nathe chapter readings, please apply the notion of advocacy statistics to dental hygiene and ponder whether the kinds of situations Sarnoff describes have occurred in the dental or dental hygiene discipline. How might the misuse of data effect theory building and, indeed, treatment in the human services?
