Questions and Topics We Can Help You To Answer:
Paper Instructions:
To be a successful student of sociology, it is crucial that you develop the ability to think critically and systematically about what we are presented in mass media and popular culture. This assignment provides you with an opportunity to apply your knowledge of one or more sociological theories to explain a piece of media. You may choose a piece of fiction (television series, an album, or a film) or non-fiction (a news article or series of articles).
Your task is to critically analyze your piece of media using one or more of the theories (and their extensions) that we have discussed in the class. The goal is to show that you understand one or more theories in detail, and can use that knowledge to analyze a piece of media. You should show a solid understanding of your theory(ies), extensions, critiques and how it applies to your piece of media. The assignment is flexible – be creative!
Papers should be between 10-12 pages in length (written text) and should include a proper introduction/conclusion, brief summary of your news article/tv show/film, a thorough overview of your theoretical approach (explain the theory/theories in detail) and an application of this theory to your chose piece of media (ie. an analysis). In addition, the paper should include a title page and references. Papers should reflect your informed opinion based on what you have learned in the course (I expect to see integration of the course textbook/lectures). You should draw on a minimum of six outside sources in addition to the course textbook/articles. If you are using a news article the original article must be stapled to your paper (either the newspaper clipping or a print out if you read it online).
