Questions And Topics We Can Help You To Answer

There are two parts to this assignment. You must read two separate magazine articles and answer questions on them. Secondly you must compare and contrast the article, that is how are they similar, how are they different. Third, you must relate and discuss the articles to some of the concepts and definitions of gender and sexuality. Look at how masculine and feminine is socially constructed. 
ex: The Ritualization of Subordinates"
How is feminity portrayed? -submissive, dependant, live solely for men sexual needs
What about masculinity-dominant, strong, heroes
SEXISM: Believes that men are superior to women

Part one: 

First, look at the layout of each website. Describe the layout, the color scheme and how each website presents its information. By information I mean articles, videos, pictures, etc.  This should be about 1 paragraph in length. 

Choose one article from the Cosmopolitan magazine website and one article from the Maxim website and answer the following questions: 

1.What is the subject or topic of the article? 

2.Who is the intended audience? Do you think it is primarily male, female or both? What about the age group, who do you think the target age group is? 


3.Is the article looking at celebrity, politics, sports, current events, social issues, music, fashion, etc? Try and categorize the article based on the content and topic the article is discussing. 

4.Briefly discuss the quality and depth of analysis of the article.  You can do this by looking at the length of the article.  Is the article talking about an individual, a group of people, is it exploring a social issue/problem or is it exploring lifestyle (lifestyle meaning fashion, cooking, relationships, etc). 

Part two: 

Compare and contrast the two articles from one another. Write a paragraph reflecting on the questions you answered above. To what extent do you think the articles you analyzed reinforced some of the issues that we discussed surrounding gender in class and in the textbook (see chapter 10 on gender)?  When thinking critically about the two websites and articles, think on a scale from one to ten (one being weak and ten being strong). Do you think the two websites and articles very strongly reinforce gender norms or not, why or why not?
