- I found about the Orlando Museum of Arts through my friend known as James. He updated me with the news that there would be an art event at the museum. He explained about the museum and the art collections that I could experience within the time of visiting the area. James stated the date of the event to be on 15/10/2011. He also gave the instructions about the location of the place. I had an interest with the information and decided to do a research about the event on my own. While researching for more news about the event, I found the advertisement on one of the local gazette that stated with bolded letters that there would be a major art event in the Orlando Museum of arts. The newspaper illustrated how the event would be and stated with minimal information of what to find in the museum.
- Even though there were other events that could take place the same day of the event in Orlando, I decided to choose this place because of various reasons. One of the reasons is that I gained detailed information about the place from my friend James and the advertisement in the local gazette. The other reason is that according to the information I got, Orlando Museum contains many features comparing to any other art event I ever visited before. In order to gain access to the event, the management of the museum was not charging the entrance fee. The other reason for attending the event is that the participants were to enjoy a 90 minutes interactive guided tour. According to the advertisement, the participants were also to enjoy various studio activities in the museum. The participants would also have an opportunity to carry with them some materials provided during the event as away of to extend the program’s positive effect.
- When the date of the event arrived, I managed to attend the event as planned in order to enjoy the experience of Orlando. Inside the museum there were various collections from different parts of the world. There were a number of exhibitions around the museum to experience during the event. The management of the museum was offering education programs for various activities that were taking place during the event. Other programs that were taking place that day include entertainment and dancing moments during the afternoon. The collections that were in the museum include the African art, the American art and the art of ancient Americans. There was also the collection of contemporary American Graphics and new acquisitions among other many more collections.
- Among of all the collections that were in the event museum, the ones that captured my attention were the first three that I outlined earlier. One of the three collections was about the African art. This collection includes wood figures and marts from the African community. According to the management staff of the museum, they weigh collection of the African art towards textiles, beadwork and forms of adornment. Most of the collections that were in the event were objects created by the Western African cultures. Most if the communities that create the collections according to the staff include the Yoruba and Ekoi. In the African art collections, there were various types of clothe materials that were from different ethnic groups.
- The first piece of material that I noticed was the speckled collars from a community known as Thembu. The community is at Mthingwevu in South Africa. According to the writings attached to the speckled collars, the community makes the art work from glass beads and fiber. The collars are about 11inches and 12.5 inches in size. These materials were a gift from two people namely, William D. and Norma Canelas Roth. The other art material that attracted me is the woman’s tobacco bag also from the Thembu community. The tobacco bag is from glass beads and wood cloth. Other components used to create the bag include the cotton tassels and cord. The bag is a rectangular piece of material that constitutes a size of 12 by 8 by 1.5 inches. According to the information attached to the tobacco bag, it was a gift from William D. and Canellas Roth. The third piece of art work that I paid much attention in the event was the girl’s panel came from South Africa. This piece of material is from a community known as Ndebele. The materials used in creating the piece of art work include, cloth and fiber. The above pieces of art work were very attractive and portrayed the activities that various communities in Africa engage in order to gain their daily bread.
- In the course of the day, I managed to meet many unfamiliar people. However, I managed to have a chat with a woman known as O Chinglek, she stated that her intensions for attended the art event were to experience some items from different ancient groups. She also stated that she was able to attend the event because her home is located in the area of Orlando. The woman explained that the Orlando museum posses as the largest site of art collections in the region. According to her, the museum is one the largest source of information associated with art collection in the whole of Orlando region. She stated that she had a great interest in artwork since when she young and that she holds a degree in art education after being a major in the field while she was in Thailand. She stated that while in Thailand, she was a teacher in and was much interested to visit the museum.
- The second person that I had a chat with on the art event day was a woman by name Supakan. She stated that she is a high school student in Orlando and holds much interest in the field of artwork. Her intention after completing the high school is to study in Art Major. According to Supakan, the reason for attending the art event was to come and experience new materials and learning more about art work. She also stated that she was looking for more artwork that would help her get inspired of her exhibition in the next two weeks.
- I enjoyed the performance of the exhibit on the event day because of experiencing many new artwork materials. The management of the Museum assisted much in accessing many new materials that I had not experienced before. According to the artwork from the African communities, I learned how it is possible to use some of the resources that are easily available in home area and construct many fascinating art work materials. The artwork developed a positive attitude that I ought to have in order to make some materials in future.
- The artwork of this particular event was the best according to my view. Comparing to other artwork events that I have visited earlier, this particular event posed as a great opportunity to learn about the African culture. Although I did not get ample time to learn more about the American culture, the event was full of artwork materials from the culture. I would like to take another opportunity in future to attend to an artwork event in the museum.
- The artwork event in the museum gave me an opportunity to develop a high level of critical thinking. The event also helped me to develop a more convenient way of making communication. Both of the people I managed to converse with, helped me to become more confident while making future dialogues. I managed to develop a view of what different culture perform in different parts of the world. Different cultural values of various communities helped me to appreciate diversity. The artwork event helped to understand the need of strengthening the community resources. After attending, the event, I was able to clarify various issues concerning different types of artwork. The activities that took place in the museum during that day were very helpful and fascinating.
