CHARISMATIC & TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADERSHIP
Both transformational and charismatic leadership focus on influencing followers and bringing a positive change but the difference arises when it comes to methods used to influence. However, the key difference between the two types of leadership is that transformational leadership focuses on collective visions and power sharing, and encourages the followers to take new perspective and great ownership in odor to bring change (Northouse, 2013). In other words, there is metrical elevation and a reciprocal position is needed in order to fulfill the vision. On the other hand, charismatic leadership focuses on creating a vision and influences and stimulates followers to achieve the vision. In other words, charismatic leader act in every situation such developing vision, creating ways to achieve the vision, creating key values and empowering people (Northouse, 2013).
According to Northouse (2013), charismatic leaders have unique personality c which they use to influence others. In other words, leaders a have a special gift and the focus on setting persuasive visions and motivate followers to devote themselves and be committed in to achieve goals. Indeed, charismatic leaders have a dominating personality and focus on creating a solution-oriented vision, communicate the visions, employ technical expertise, build trust and acts as a role model. Having analyzed the traits of a charismatic leader, it is worthy to say that these leaders always have a positive influence on followers (Northouse, 2013). This is because; these leaders create a clear vision and inspire people to achieve the vision. In addition, leaders help people to achieve the vision since they place a considerable responsibility and create a spirit of collaboration. Followers are positively influenced since they work for a common cause, they are committed to achieve the vision, mission and goals, they apply problem solving skills and learn from mistakes and they set a clear purpose. Followers are influenced and strived to work for a better a world (Northouse, 2013). For example, let us focus on Martin Luther King. The leader is well known for his great role in developing civil rights not only in U.S.A but also worldwide. In 1950’s, racial inequality was a big problem and Martin Luther with a lot of confidence believed that uncivil rights will end and less privileged people will enjoy equality. In fact, he brought a remarkable change and eliminated racial inequality as he was driven by the principle of quality. Moreover, no one in U.S.A believed that one day there will be a change but the king believed that everyone should live in a better place. To achieve this, he used strategies such as labor movement, basic income and right to a job.
According to Bellé (2014), transformational leadership embraces a powerful motivating factor to employee performance. The article asserts that behaviors associated with this type of leadership are inspirational motivation which means that leaders creates an inspiring vision to 1the followers. Leaders have idealized influence which means that they act as role models and followers develop respect and trust and admires to imitate the behaviors (Bellé, 2014). Third, leaders have intellectual stimulation where they encourage followers to forget old assumption and focus on new perceptions based on innovation implement problem-solving skills and be creative. Finally, leaders’ posses individualized consideration where leaders’ shows concern to each and every follower’s needs and directs them to the right direction (Bellé, 2014). Transformational leadership has great impact on the follower in that leaders encourages and motivates followers to improving performance. For example, followers develop self-persuasion and they use positive perception. The article asserts the this type of leadership leads to beneficiary contact and this means that followers are motivated and improves performance hence increase productivity (Bellé, 2014). Other impact is that transformational leadership focus on creating a vision and bringing change. Thus, leaders bring positive changes to the followers through inspiration.
