12 Years a Slave

            This movie is an adaptation of the life story of Solomon Northup, a black American born free in New York but was later kidnapped , taken to the South and was sold to the owner of a plantation in Louisiana in 1841. The movie starts with Solomon already enslaved and busy working on a plantation. It shows a series of flashbacks shifting the story to the earlier time when Solomon was living with his family in New York (Steve, 2013). Solomon accepts of playing violin in a circus for two white men. While the three were enjoying a civilized night out, sealing their companionship with heaps of food, wine and unstated conviction. Solomon on waking up the next morning discovers that he has been sold.

            The story about Solomon is a representation of all marginalized people as well as the American past and present. The movie shows how slaves were ill treated by their masters since they had no power. Solomon was born in freedom while New York, despite the fact that he was deprived certain as an African American for example right to vote . However he was free to a certain extent because he could enjoy outings with his family which was not the case while he was in captivity. Therefore, in conclusion, the movie presents the marginalized group of persons. In this case, the movie shows the state of African Americans who were treated as objects of sale by their masters the whites (Steve, 2013). This shows a clear distinction and marginalization between African Americans and whites, where they ill treated African Americans as commodities to be sold in order to serve as servants in the plantations.
