The sopranos

Speaking Model:

            Setting & Scene: the setting was in Dr. Melfi’s office in New Jersey. The fact that this scene takes place in New Jersey maybe important to note because there is a large Italian population there

Participants:

            Tony who is the patient revealed in the first therapy session of his depression state to Dr. Melfi. He does this while making a comparison the modern person to the western hero who is flawless.

Ends:

The conversation was undertaken in an official way so that the therapist would understand what tony was going through and the meeting was conducted face to face.

Act Sequence:

The speaking was done in discussion form a Doctor who tries to offer therapy services would pose question from which tony would develop his argument. The therapist gives tony the opportunity to express how he feels.

Key: (tone).

The tone is very important to note in this scene. Tony takes a very relaxed, informal tone when speaking to Dr. Melfi. By referring to her as Hun as opposed to Doctor, may indicate that he has a misogynistic view of women. The Doctor utilizes calm and a formal tone when making her conversation and she does not interrupt when Tony speaks (Schweitzer, 1:16).

Instrumentalities

The conversation took place face to face to increase the communication efficiency.

Norms:

The scene was not characterized by any norms as tony and the Doctor talks in relaxed mode while tony seems to be informal which is not questioned or stated to be wrong.

Genre: 

The type of communication that was utilized by the participants was speech.  This was a conversation between the both of them in offering therapy to Tony.
