- Using PubMed via the Galter Library website, start with the MeSH database to search for randomized controlled trials supporting the use of beta blockers in the treatment of congestive heart failure. To reveal your search strategy, find the " Details" section, and copy and paste your strategy into your essay.
- PubMed Search (using MeSH concepts)
- ("heart failure"[MeSH Terms] OR heart failure[Text Word]) AND (("adrenergic beta-antagonists"[TIAB] NOT Medline[SB]) OR "adrenergic beta-antagonists"[MeSH Terms] OR "adrenergic beta-antagonists"[Pharmacological Action])
- PubMed Search with limit to randomized controlled trials) 498 results
- (("heart failure"[MeSH Terms] OR heart failure[Text Word]) AND (("adrenergic beta-antagonists"[TIAB] NOT Medline[SB]) OR "adrenergic beta-antagonists"[MeSH Terms] OR "adrenergic beta-antagonists"[Pharmacological Action])) AND Randomized Controlled Trial[ptyp].
- Perform the same search using Ovid, also available via the Galter Library website, and compare and contrast your experience.
- PubMed Search (using Ovid concepts)
- (("heart failure"[TIAB] NOT Medline[SB]) OR "heart failure"[MeSH Terms] OR congestive heart failure[Text Word]) AND (("adrenergic beta-antagonists"[TIAB] NOT Medline[SB]) OR "adrenergic beta-antagonists"[MeSH Terms] OR "adrenergic beta-antagonists"[Pharmacological Action] OR beta blocker[Text Word])
- Results from both the MeSH searches and the Ovid searches bring Medline as the initial product. Other added results come after the research of both products. The PubMed is usually a database that contains and Premedline. The relationship between Ovid and MeSH databases in relation to providing results is citations (Polit, 2008). Citations from both Ovid and MeSH appear in the database after publishers provide them. Editing of both products takes place later they normally use the same process. While finalizing the procedure of finding results using both searches, it is possible to indicate addition of subject headings after the editing takes place in both products. The last step while using both of the processes is to create other literature citations produced by the National Library of Medicine (Bhandari & Joensson, 2009).
- Ovid Technologies created MEDLINE, PreMEDLINE, EBM (Evidence Based Medicine) (Winfield,2007). The technologies also introduced the Reviews, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews (literature reviewed for excellence in research methodology), Cancerlit, CINAHL (Cumulated Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature), and EMBASE (Excerpta Medica Database, a major biomedical and pharmaceutical database well known for its international scope).
- While using the Ovid interface, one is able to run the same search across multiple databases. This feature enhances the results by taking advantage of the unique focus of these various databases (Tze-chung, 2006). The Ovid Medline offers a more sophisticated mapping system that assist in identifying appropriate subject headings.
