Slur or Honor, Tribute or Stereotype

Questions and Topics We Can Help You To Answer:
Paper Instructions:

Native American mascots date back to the 19thcentury, and approximately 900 teams across the U.S. still sport Native American names – like hockey’s Chicago Blackhawks, baseball’s Atlanta Braves, and–at the center of controversy today–the Washington Redskins (the term “Redskin” is considered a racial epithet or slur to Native Americans).  Native American activists are increasingly challenging the stereotypical Native images by sports, entertainment, and educational institutions.  Activists contend that the use of such imagery perpetuates old stereotypes about American Indians, and are as demeaning as the Amos & Andy, Frito Bandito, and Aunt Jemima racial caricatures of a not-so-distant segregated past.  Proponents of Indian mascots claim that using these images honors Native peoples and promotes native culture in highly visible forums.
