Required Movie #1: "An Inconvenient Truth" 2006 (1 hour, 36 minutes) MOVIE DISCUSSION BOARD: "AN INCONVENIENT TRUTH"
One of the pivotal turning points that led to a change in public consensus on Climate Change was the airing of the movie "An Inconvenient Truth" in 2006. It provides straightforward explanations for global warming and the science behind Climate Change. It also addresses several commonly held Climate Denier Myths. If you have seen this movie before, it is still important to watch because you can focus more in depth on the science concepts that are discussed. Even though the movie is now 14 years old, the science has been well documented for decades and the arguments are still the same. This movie laid the groundwork for teachers and educators around the globe to present the basic facts and spread the science to their communities. Gore's more recent release "An Inconvenient Sequel" (2017) covers the current impacts and solutions but the first movie is best at explaining the Science.
For those interested in learning more, please also consider watching the two hour NOVA documentary "Decoding the Weather Machine (Links to an external site.)" (2018), a more recent movie that goes deeper into the science of Climate Change.
PART I: Assignment (26 pts)
Watch the movie at the above link. Do not attempt the assignment unless you watch the movie. Make sure to read the questions below before watching the movie, it will help a lot! Use separate paragraphs for each question and keep your responses organized.
1. Introduction (2 pts)
How much did you know about Climate Change before the movie? Have you seen or heard about the movie before?
2. The Basic Science of Global Warming: "The Greenhouse Effect" (4 pts)
Early in the movie, Al Gore discusses the Basic Science of Global Warming. This concept he discusses is known as "The Greenhouse Effect" and is the most important concept to understand in the subject of Climate Change. Provide a summary of this concept (review from your textbook as needed). The better you can understand this concept now, the easier your first lab and the rest of the class will be. Be sure to explain the difference between solar radiation (sunlight) and infra-red radiation (heat) in your summary.
3. Climate Change Science Concepts (10 pts)
The movie has many other important Climate Change science concepts throughout. List 10 scientific concepts from the movie and provide a description of a sentence or two for each one. Don't worry too much about understanding each one, the goal is to get familiar with the different concepts and start understanding the overall picture of Climate Change. You will soon be learning more details about each of these science concepts in class. (Science concept examples: tipping point, arctic amplification...etc.)
4. Three of the Most Common Climate Denier Myths (2 pts each)
Explain how Al Gore refutes each of the common climate denier myths below.
a) Myth #1: "Scientists don’t agree". In your response, provide a comparison between science articles and news articles. Watch this short and humorous video to help you discuss this myth.
b) Myth #2: "Doing something would ruin our economy". Provide a discussion of the automobile industry example as discussed in the movie. Include a discussion of what can happen if we don't make the changes.
c) Myth #3: "Despair is our only possible reaction". Discuss what we can do instead of feeling only despair. List at least three social or scientific advancements discussed in the movie where humans have been able to overcome societal norms to "create extraordinary advancements previously thought to be impossible". Keep these things in mind throughout the class, to let you know that yes, Climate Change can be resolved!
5. Review of "An Inconvenient Truth" (4 pts)
Provide a personal summary of the movie. Include in your summary three different topics that you found the most interesting from the movie. What is your biggest question about Climate Change or what would you like to learn more about after watching the movie? (minimum 100 - 200 words total review)
Questions and Topics We Can Help You To Answer: Paper Instructions:
For the Assignment, you will synthesize your understanding of the theories, best practices, and current trends in human services to create a case presentation that would be used during a case conference/staffing meeting in an agency. While most of these meetings are informal, many agencies/organizations use a more formal approach. To prepare for this future job responsibility and leadership role, you will create a paper that could be used during one of these meetings. Use the paper structure below to organize the facts and recommendations for your hypothetical client.
Begin by deciding the type of agency and job that interests you, and imagine you are a professional working at this.
Next, create a hypothetical client or use one from a prior exercise in our class. Follow the suggested structure below for writing your paper. Add relevant details and leave out minor ones that are not relevant to the client’s progress. While you will not be required to write papers for these meetings, you will be required to report this type of information and to be organized and prepared. This exercise will assist you in developing a case presentation for when you really will be making them.
Suggested Organization of Paper: use sub-headings to organize your information:
1. Type of agency and your role/job description (no sub-heading)
2. Client name and demographics (no sub-heading)
3. Presenting problem (sub-heading): What was the reason for the client enrolling in service at your agency? Be specific about the problem, but do not add many extra details by “telling the client’s story;” just write a few sentences about the problem as the client perceived it.
4. Goal (sub-heading): What are the client’s main intervention/treatment goals? Be specific and add as many as you can think of that would relate to the full scope of services that your agency might provide. However, remember that clients may want to limit their goals to three goals at a time or fewer so it is important to prioritize goals. Goals should adhere to the SMART criteria.
5. Needs (sub-heading): What other needs does your client have that others in your agency or outside agencies might be able to provide or assist in making referrals?
6. Crisis (sub-heading): Probably, your client is not currently in crisis, so you would simply report that the client is stabilized and there are no ongoing crises for the moment. If your client is in the middle of a crisis, you would briefly describe it, only giving facts that are relevant.
7. Recommendations (sub-heading): This is the part of the paper (meeting) where you provide your professional opinion about the continued direction of the client’s progress, ideas for future goals, planning or strategies for helping the client, resource referrals, and any other suggestions that you have to advance your client’s care. You will spend time using information from your past classes to support your prioritized recommendations, so make this one of the longest sections of your paper.
THIS PAPER SHOULD BE A MINIMUM OF 6–8 PAGES OR 1500–2000 WORDS, NOT INCLUDING THE TITLE AND REFERENCE PAGE, WITH A MINIMUM OF 3 SCHOLARLY, ACADEMIC REFERENCES IN APA FORMATTING.
POSSIBLE RESSOURCES AND REFERENCES:
• HN330: Case Management in Human Services • HN347: Public Personnel Administration • HN370: Child Welfare and Family • HN377: Studies in Child Adolescent Development

You are strongly encouraged to work with the Writing Lab to get assistance with your academic writing; take advantage of this free service, as part of your university education!
You must use APA-formatted in-text citations and References to indicate the source of any ideas you apply from other authors. You are encouraged to summarize and paraphrase whenever possible rather than directly quoting, as your instructor is much more interested in what you now know and understand than in what you can quote from your research. (However, citations and References are still required, even if you're not directly quoting.)
All written assignments in this course follow the 300 Level Grading Rubric for Written Communications, which is listed below. Your grade will be determined by the ratings you earn on each line of the rubric, so please pay close attention to the descriptions of each item.

Student Project Operations Improvement Plan
Prepare a typewritten project paper describing your plan to improve the process (TASK) you currently work in (Childcare Director), presented with Problem Statement and Flowcharts. This plan should identify and explain in details of the process, including graphical representations and flowcharts.
This paper must be a coherent unification of operation management, and quality processes quantifying the magnitude of the anticipated improvement, e.g., quantifiable cycle time reductions, inventory cost reductions.reduction of labor cost or a significant differentiation of product/services.
Data depicting the results of the process improvement is required. You should be able to produce data, and present a data analysis that will be the basis for your recommendations. If data is not available, (you can build data on an assumption basis) outline how such data could be obtained, what the data might be expected to reveal, and how you would evaluate the success of the improvement project. In either case, be sure to provide a detailed explanation of how you arrived at your conclusions and recommendations. Minimum 20-30 pages.
