BONUS: RESPOND TO THIS PARAGRAPH:

The last event I planned was my boys' birthday party.  Since both my boys are less than a year apart they used to share a party.  I had always started planning January 1st because their birthdays are first week of March.  I would decide where we were having, date, and time by Mid-January so I could send invites out in time. Around the 15th of January I would pass out or mail all paper invites then would create a Facebook event for those who had a Facebook account even if they had already been invited.  I usually asked for RSVP's by Mid-February so I could plan food accordingly.  I typically made all the food and grilled out burgers, brats, and hotdogs, even if it was snowing (Wisconsin weather).
I had done the same process each year for 4-5 years and each years outcome of party goers were different. Some years only 5 people showed and others 40 people showed.  So now I just invite who I want and who my kids want and expect all to show plus 15 people just in case.  Then if less show I have left overs and don't have to cook for awhile.  My kids love left over burgers, brats, and hotdogs from the grill. Win-win in my opinion.

PHI 210

Part 1 WEEK 4
"Fallacies and Errors in Sound Reasoning"
This week you are learning about the many fallacies that occur in writing as well as in our conversations.  The purpose of learning about fallacies is to make you aware of the use of fallacies in everyday language and writings.  Also, learning and knowing about them will help you to avoid using them as much as possible.
Identify the fallacy being committed in each and indicate the rationale for your answer. Here is an example of how to respond
"Just in the last month I’ve heard a number of people claiming that one-use plastic bags from grocery stores are terrible for the environment. Hah! Using plastic bags is by far the easiest way to carry groceries, and the cost to the store must be insignificant."
ANSWER:  Red herring because the premises are irrelevant to the conclusion.

1.    We should either pay our teachers better salaries or admit that we don't care about our children's education.
2.    Of course she's rich! Just look at that diamond ring she is wearing.
3.    I love visiting Wyoming because I enjoy traveling in the West.
4.    He went to college and came back a pothead; college corrupted him.
5.    The death penalty is a warning just like a lighthouse throwing its beams out to sea. We hear about shipwrecks, but we do not hear about the ships that the lighthouse guides safely on their way. We do not have proof of the number of ships it saves, but we do not tear the lighthouse down.
6.    The United States is a wealthy country; therefore, Sam Jones must be wealthy.
7.    Every attempt to prove that people are immortal has failed. No evidence can be found which shows that people's souls exist after death; hence, immortality must be false.

PART 2

"Identifying Misleading Information in an Argument"
For this discussion, we are going to  evaluate the claims of some products you may use currently.
Ads and testimonials for nutritional supplements are among the most effective marketing tools ever, as is supported by the unprecedented growth in the sales of energy drinks, dietary supplements, vitamin beverages, and stimulants.
Select from a product you are currently purchasing for your own use or any product of this kind that interests you. Use the information provided on the product label and from the product’s Web site as needed to respond to the following questions.  Post your response to the discussion.
Then review one of your peer’s responses on their product and provide your feedback and thoughts.
1.    What claims are made about the benefits of this product?
2.    What research is cited or what evidence is supplied to support the truth of these claims?
3.    Who are the people who have provided testimonials to support the product?
4.    What level of expertise do these individuals have with regard to human nutrition?
5.    Were any of these individuals paid to provide their endorsement?
6.    What warnings, risks, or potentially harmful side effects are presented?
