2.Take a position as to whether or not conditions of correctional facilities circumvent the “cruel and unusual punishment standard” of the Eighth Amendment. Provide a rationale for your response.
3.Support or refute the removal of corporal punishment from the U.S. corrections system. Provide a rationale for your response.
4.Create an argument for or against intermediate sanctions as a deterrent of crime. Support your viewpoint with one (1) example of intermediate sanctions that reflects your opinion.
5.Debate whether or not correctional facilities are adequately equipped to deal with mentally ill inmates. Provide a rationale for your response.

Policy Controversies
As the new sheriff, you must decide your department’s policy on a range of controversial issues. Many of these issues are handled differently from one department to the next.
For this discussion, explain how you would decide each of the following issues and be sure to discuss why you support your position. Because there are arguments on both sides of each of these issues, you should research each issue and consider all sides before committing to a position:
•Body cameras: Should all deputies in your department be required to wear body cameras while on duty?
•Gratuities: Should deputies be allowed to accept gratuities while on duty, such as a free cup of coffee or a discounted meal?
•Moonlighting: Should deputies be allowed to work part time, in uniform, while off duty (such as checking identification at a bar or providing security at a concert)?
•Some jurisdictions have a rule that their police officers must reside within the city or county that they work for. Is this a good idea? What are some of the benefits or drawbacks of such a policy?
Justify the stances you take by citing specific research and events.

The Mission Statement
You have been elected sheriff. Upon taking office, you have determined that the department seems disorganized and unfocused. You believe that a clear mission statement is the first step in bringing the department back on track.
For this assignment, you will review the mission statements from three different sheriff’s offices or city police departments and then create a 4- to 5-page report in Microsoft Word that covers the following:
•Describe what a mission statement is and explain the purpose for having one.
•Identify the three different departments you selected for review of their mission statements and describe how well each mission statement meets the goal of providing a clear mission for their department. Identify the best parts of each and indicate any changes or additions you would make.
•Next, develop a proper mission statement for your department. Be sure that your mission statement spells out the department’s goals and priorities. Keep in mind that the mission statement will be viewed by the public and should reflect well on your department, so use of proper spelling and grammar is critical. The mission statements you reviewed above should provide guidance.
•Last, explain how your sheriff’s department would evaluate whether or not it was meeting the goals described in the mission statement. In other words, how will you know if you’re succeeding or need to improve? Be as specific as possible.

Correctional Management
You have been hired by a private corrections company. The company has operated several jails but now is planning to build its first medium-security prison. Some of the company’s leaders are unclear on what their new endeavor will require, so you have been given the task of preparing a 4- to 5-page report in a Microsoft Word document addressing the following:
•Describe the key differences between operating a jail and operating a prison. Focus on the personnel requirements, training, daily tasks of the officers, etc. Apply the management concepts from this course to this section of the report.
•Identify the other organizations, both inside and outside the criminal justice system, that the facility will need to interact with (and how) in order to perform its key functions.
•Discuss the key functions that will need to be performed in the prison. For example, the facility will need to provide medical care and meals for the inmates.
•Explain the unique supervisory challenges that will exist in a prison. What types of employee misbehavior are possible, and how can management guard against them?
Support your responses with examples.

Consent Decree
Corruption and misbehavior on the job are serious problems that all police agencies must contend with. Because law enforcement officers are usually unsupervised when interacting with the public and have the power to use physical force, it is critical that they perform their duties ethically.
In December of 2015, the US Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that it would be reviewing the Chicago Police Department. One year prior to this announcement, the city of Chicago had commissioned a study of its police disciplinary procedures, in an effort to improve officers’ conduct. Click here to view the report with the findings of this study.
You have been asked to prepare a 4- to 5-page report in a Microsoft Word document for the DOJ’s review team addressing the following points:
•Summarize the recommendations that were presented in the December 2014 study and describe how those recommendations could improve the performance of the Chicago Police Department. Pay particular attention to the section regarding Field Training Officers (FTOs).
•Based on your research about the issues that have prompted the DOJ to intervene, present your own recommendations for improving Chicago police.
•Describe a “consent decree” and explain what will occur if the DOJ obtains a consent decree regarding the Chicago Police Department.
Support your responses with examples. Cite any sources using the APA format on a separate page.
