A summary essay should be organized so that others can understand the source or evaluate
your comprehension of it.  The following format works well:
a. The introduction (usually one paragraph)--
    1.    Contains a one-sentence thesis statement that sums up the main point of the source.
          This thesis statement is not your main point; it is the main point of your source.
          Usually, though, you have to write this statement rather than quote it from the source
          text.  It is a one-sentence summary of the entire text that your essay summarizes.
    2.    Also introduces the text to be summarized:
            (i)  Gives the title of the source (following the citation guidelines of whatever style
                sheet you are using);
            (ii)  Provides the name of the author of the source;
            (ii)  Sometimes also provides pertinent background information about the author of
                the source or about the text to be summarized.
The introduction should not offer your own opinions or evaluation of the text you are summarizing.
b.  The body of a summary essay (one or more paragraphs):
    This paraphrases and condenses the original piece.  In your summary, be sure that you--
    1.    Include important data but omit minor points;
    2.    Include one or more of the author’s examples or illustrations (these will bring your
            summary to life);
    3.    Do not include your own ideas, illustrations, metaphors, or interpretations.  Look
            upon yourself as a summarizing machine; you are simply repeating what the source
            text says, in fewer words and in your own words.  But the fact that you are using
            your own words does not mean that you are including your own ideas.
c. There is customarily no conclusion to a summary essay.
When you have summarized the source text, your summary essay is finished.  Do not add your own concluding paragraph unless your teacher specifically tells you to.

Questions And Topics We Can Help You To Answer

There are two parts to this assignment. You must read two separate magazine articles and answer questions on them. Secondly you must compare and contrast the article, that is how are they similar, how are they different. Third, you must relate and discuss the articles to some of the concepts and definitions of gender and sexuality. Look at how masculine and feminine is socially constructed.
ex: The Ritualization of Subordinates"
How is feminity portrayed? -submissive, dependant, live solely for men sexual needs
What about masculinity-dominant, strong, heroes
SEXISM: Believes that men are superior to women

Part one:

First, look at the layout of each website. Describe the layout, the color scheme and how each website presents its information. By information I mean articles, videos, pictures, etc.  This should be about 1 paragraph in length.

Choose one article from the Cosmopolitan magazine website and one article from the Maxim website and answer the following questions:

1.What is the subject or topic of the article?

2.Who is the intended audience? Do you think it is primarily male, female or both? What about the age group, who do you think the target age group is?

3.Is the article looking at celebrity, politics, sports, current events, social issues, music, fashion, etc? Try and categorize the article based on the content and topic the article is discussing.

4.Briefly discuss the quality and depth of analysis of the article.  You can do this by looking at the length of the article.  Is the article talking about an individual, a group of people, is it exploring a social issue/problem or is it exploring lifestyle (lifestyle meaning fashion, cooking, relationships, etc).

Part two:

Compare and contrast the two articles from one another. Write a paragraph reflecting on the questions you answered above. To what extent do you think the articles you analyzed reinforced some of the issues that we discussed surrounding gender in class and in the textbook (see chapter 10 on gender)?  When thinking critically about the two websites and articles, think on a scale from one to ten (one being weak and ten being strong). Do you think the two websites and articles very strongly reinforce gender norms or not, why or why not?

DOUBLE-SPACED
Make sure to answer the questions in order. NOT 4321, 3421. ONLY 1 2 3 4

Answer the following question:In Vitoria's treatise "On Just War," Vitoria makes some rather strong demands upon any State that wants to go to war against another State. The war must be based on just reasons and it must be fought justly. One of the questions Vitoria addresses in paragraphs 20-27 is what happens when a State has doubt about whether it is just to launch a war. I want you to read this section closely and apply the principles that Vitoria proposes for the following case: One State (A) fears that another State (B) is preparing to attack it. State A thinks that these preparations are happening in secret buildings, but State B says this is not true, and it lets neutral observers into the country to look for the weapons that State A says it is building. The neutral observers find no evidence, but the question is still open. State A decides that it State B is still hiding the weapons and just stalling until it is ready to attack State A. State A launches the war with a preemptive strike. What would Vitoria say?

Structure of a ”Policy Brief”
1.    Executive summary
2.    Context and importance of the problem
3.    Critique of policy option(s)
4.    Policy recommendations

1.  Executive summary
The executive summary aims to convince the reader that the brief is worth in-depth investigation.  It is especially important for an audience that is short of time to clearly see the relevance and importance of the brief in reading the summary.  As such, a 1-2 paragraph executive summary commonly includes:
o    -  A description of the problem addressed;
o    -  A statement on why the current approach/policy option needs to be changed;
o    -  Your recommendations for action.
2. Context and importance of the problem
The purpose of this element of the brief is to convince the target audience that a current and urgent problem exists which requires them to take action.  The context and importance of the problem is both the introductory and first building block of the brief.  This usually includes the following:
o    -  A clear statement of the problem or issue in focus;
o    -  A short overview of the root causes of the problem;
o    -  A clear statement of the policy implications of the problem that clearly establishes the current importance and policy relevance of the issue.
3.  Critique of policy option(s)
The aim of this element is to detail shortcomings of the current approach or options being implemented and, therefore, illustrate both the need for change and focus on where change needs to occur.  The critique of policy options usually includes the following:
o    -  A short overview of the policy option(s) in focus;
o    -  An argument illustrating why and how the current or proposed approach is failing.
4.  Policy recommendations
The aim of the policy recommendations element is to provide a detailed and convincing proposal of how the failings of the current policy approach need to be changed.  This is achieved by including;
o    -  A breakdown of the specific practical steps or measures that need to be implemented;
o    -  Sometimes also includes a closing paragraph re-emphasizing the importance of action.
