Prompt:  Compared to other developed countries, the United States has far fewer social policies to help families maintain their economic security and balance caretaking obligation with employment.  Based on course readings, what underlying ideology or perspective might justify the scant public resources to support family life?  How do the consequences (or penalties) attached to caretaking work differ for middle-class mothers compared to working-class/poor mothers?  What are the larger social consequences stemming from the denigration of caretaking work for society as a whole?

Background info.

This boy is a six year old boy that comes from a jewish observant home.  He is the last child of three children following two girls.  He is hearing impaired and therefore he is over protected by his family.  He has a good relationship with his family.  However, he is extremely spoiled.  Everything and anything is done for him.  Based on the information above, answer the following questions.

Family Observation

Observe a child throughout the semester on two different settings that are significant to the child. Observe and describe the child’s development and characteristics, his or her interactions with the main caregiver or service provider (e.g., a teacher, a grandmother) and see how the child interacts differently in different settings. Please gather adequate information from the people who interact with the child frequently by either having a face-to-face or phone conversation.
After synthesizing all the information, your report needs to include:

Does the child enjoy these interactions or not? Why? Are the interactions conducive to gains in child’s cognitive, physical, communication, social and emotional and adaptive development? In which ways? Explain.

Note each of the influences present in each of the levels, and explain how they affect the child.

Questions and Topics We Can Help You Answering;

Topic:  Max Weber, Power and the film 'Capitalism: A Love Story'

Please watch first: http://www.veoh.com/watch/v41581710hNCQ4Ayq

Class and status groups are considered by Weber to be associated with power, to achieve one's will, even in the face of opposition from others. Weber says that status and class is an important source of group social action. Status is a means of maintaining the position of a group that has privilege. The status group is closed, with privileges available only to those in the group, and denied to those outside the group. Status groups become the means by which power or authority is exercised (e.g. old boy networks, professional status groups and organizations, religious or ethnic groups). Social approval is a means of achieving the ends of the group while social disapproval is used as a means of disciplining those who do not behave.

Question - Weber defined power as when an individual in a social relationship is able to achieve his or her own will even against the resistance of others. Michael Moore's 2009 film is more relevant now than ever.

Below are some questions you may address in your reflection paper. There are no  right or wrong answers to these questions, but lots of food for your thought:

The film elaborates and mocks justifications for Capitalism. What were some of the claims for why capitalism is so good? What problems do you see with those claims?
The film focuses heavily on a moral condemnation of Capitalism. Do you agree with that approach? Is it effective in touching the experiences of working-class people?
Corporations repeatedly claim that cutting jobs will allow them to save money and stay in business. Why does this not seem to work much in the examples detailed in the film?
How does all of this figure in to person blame and system blame approaches??

Format:

1.5 space your paper and set the font to 12-point; Times New Roman. Indent each paragraph. Set the margins to one-inch all around. The paper should be left-aligned, with a "ragged right" margin. Type your title in the center of the first page. At the right top corner, type your name. Below your name, type Sociology 011. Below that, type the date.

First (I) Paragraph is an abstract so write a paragraph of 150 to 250 words summarizing the key points of what your 'critical thinking' is leading you to say.

Second (II) Paragraph is the main body of your paper; following the formatting guidelines in step one. In the Body,

a. Lay out for the reader what the topic is about;

b. Answer the question using fact from the documentary, video, film;

c. Use one or two examples.

In the Conclusion (Paragraph III) summarize your points, and use one more example to hammer home your thought on the topic.

Anecdotal Notes and Observation

Taking Anecdotal Notes and Objective Observation

One of the most important jobs early childhood teachers have is to build brain synapses. Did you know that children develop all of those synapses by age 5? So, in the first 2000 days of their lives, those are the days they spend with you, early childhood teachers and caregivers set the stage for the child’s life success. That is a huge responsibility and honor to know your impact is so great.

What does that have to do with anecdotal notes and observation? If you don’t observe the children how do you know what they know, what interests they have and answer questions a caregiver may have about their child at school? You probably can answer some questions but could you be more confident if you had notes about their child? Yes!

By Thursday the 19th watch the 2 short video’s below about how to take anecdotal notes and observation techniques.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAczTiO1rUg

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwzSn1VHvCQ

Now that you have learned the techniques, let’s practice. Follow the link below do a 2-4 sentence anecdotal note about a child in the video below. Post your note in the forum titled anecdotal notes practice and give two peers feedback on their notes. This activity will be graded based on completion of anecdotal note and responses to classmate’s anecdotal notes.
