The notion of model minority emerged in the 1960s, during the rise of the Civil Rights Movement which was led by African American citizens.
This construction of the model minority was based on the political silence of Asian America, and “had less to do with the actual success of Asian Americans than to the perceived failure of African Americans to assimilate.”
In other words, the ideological function of the model minority myth is to “compliment” Asian Americans at the expense of Black Americans, to encourage their political silence as “model” rather than resisting discrimination or fighting for civil rights or defying one’s expected position in the social-racial hierarchy.

Instructions: Aaron Douglas’s style -is the result of a deep-rooted belief that in trying to imitate the actual world, art-as-likeness was really falsifying the way we see that world.” Although all art is a form of imitation—whether of the actual or the imaginary world—Douglas’s belief highlights the way artists have used conflicting methods of getting to the “truth” of the world. Choose one image from early “realistic” methods of artistic representation and one image from later “art of alteration” and analyze the following: What kind of truth does each work try to achieve? For this assignment, students will trace the “afterlife” of Leonardo da Vinci’s masterwork, The Last Supper, by investigating a later (modern or contemporary period) work of art that reinterprets the original painting. In analyzing, comparing, and contrasting the form and content of the Renaissance original and the image that refers back to it, you will need to consider WHY as well as HOW the later artist chose to appropriate and rethink the original. What did they see there that compelled their own investigation? And finally, what do you see in The Last Supper that continues to speak to viewers across time and space, across the centuries?
