Better find the source from King Library Articles & Databases at <library.calstate.edu/sanjose/databases>.
Use legitimate sources(3), Chicago Style formats, a Work Cited page, and in-text source citations for all quoted and paraphrased material. (Use of invalid Internet sources and all incidents of plagiarism will not be allow.) Papers are to present clear thesis statements; well-structured discussions supported by relevant facts from readings, lecture and independent research; and strong summary conclusions. Following course emphases, each assigned topic asks you to research and address the political, cultural and/or social context(s) surrounding production and reception of your assigned topic. Consider these papers as highly polished versions of an exam essay and use examples from lecture, course readings, exhibit captions, and other materials as needed to emphasize or clarify your point(s). Begin discussion of each example of graphic design with a brief, objective description (usually two-three concise sentences will suffice).
Topic: Include the following areas in the final paper (other issues can be included):
• Who or what are you writing about? How is the design work typified (describe a typical work)?
• Discuss three specific examples of your chosen trend in graphic design, and include a captioned illustration of at least two examples. Standard format is to set each illustration on a separate page at end of paper. Standard caption format: Fig. 1: Designer Name, Title of Work, date, medium, location. Include client information if available.
• What does the realized design look like and why does it look this way? Can a connection be drawn between final design and the theoretical intents and ideologies of its designer? Consider choice of materials, forms, how created or manufactured, and other design factors in answering this
question.
• What is or was the context of the design? What social, technological, ideological and/or other factors contributed to the ideation and production of the work as well as its reception? What writings, reviews, speeches and/or other announcements formalize the intent of the design? What
phrases describe the designs, and what resonance do they have with non-design issues (i.e., what is the context)?
• Conclude with a discussion of your designer's approach and real or potential influence in his or her field of design. Does the featured design fit into a larger design trend and/or philosophy?
Does the designer represent the vanguard of a new approach to design?
• Format: Submit the final group paper with a cover sheet, in-text source citations and captioned illustrations, the graded individual papers, and copies of the specific page or screen print-out for
each source used.

The first wave of the Black Death swept Medieval Europe between 1348 and 1350 killing around 50% of the European population. [1]  Medieval people, not knowing modern science, responded with fear, horror, and guilt to the loss and devastation that can be seen in their spiritual, physical and emotional reactions to the plague.  For you paper, I would like you to examine how medieval people’s response to the plague reflected at least one aspect of their worldview.  In your paper, you need to support your argument with specific examples from the Horrox book. these writings are all primary sources – the exact responses of the people who lived through this.
You should refer to at least 5 different sources from this book in your discussion.  Also, you need to define which aspect of Medieval world view you are discussing.  For example, you might look at how the plague reflects their understanding of divine punishment, or how their study of the plague reflects the role of magic in the medieval world.  To find these themes, you will need to consult Cole/Symes.

Questions and Topics We Can Help You To Answer:

Life vs. Death – this is a concept based on the changing worldview of ancient man/woman and commonly depicted in the art and architecture of these various cultures.  Death and the afterlife was a significant concern for a variety of cultures as was the pursuit of civilized society in life.  Man began to see himself as a significant factor in the success of his culture as well as in control of his eternal resting place.  This transitioning appreciation for the role of man/woman in his/her life and death is the topic for this response essay.  In a concise and well written essay discuss the various cultural worldviews in regards to accomplishments in life as well as preparations for death as seen in the various cultures we have looked at (Prehistoric – Ancient Roman).  Think about the elements of civilized society and how the different cultures developed their own interpretation of what it means to be civilized.  How did they fit within the Mediterranean world at the time? How did this role connect to the afterlife? Be sure to include works of sculpture, painting and architecture and discuss how each object relates to your topic of death and the afterlife.  Be sure to fully identify (title, date, stylistic period) all of the works referenced, use specific terminology, and elaborate on how the objects relate to the topic.

Your essay is limited to three pages (10 - 12 pt. font, double spaced, typed, 1 inch margins, etc.)  Information exceeding the third page will not be considered.  Part of the assignment is to limit your writing to information packed prose – not glitzy and elaborate description.

Questions and Topics We Can Help You To Write:

Write a three-page paper, which explains, illuminates, challenges or confirms the ideas and claims made by President Franklin Roosevelt in his acceptance speech to the Democratic National Convention made on June 27, 1936. Use material taken from Jason Scott Smith’s A Concise History of the New Deal, as well as the lectures, to explicate the historical developments, New Deal policies, and political and ideological conflicts referenced in FDR’s short speech. Like any politician making a speech, the President uses short-hand phrases, brief references, and pejorative naming to make his larger political and ideological points. Although listeners and voters in 1936 might well have been familiar with his allusive comments, 21st century men and women need your help to explain his meaning.

If you quote or paraphrase material from either the book, please footnote the material. Do not use social science notation.

Here are a couple of sample footnotes:

As Jason Scott Smith makes clear, the National Industrial Recovery Act of 1933 was designed to stabilize and democratize American capitalism. President Roosevelt called the NIRA “the most important and far-reaching legislation ever enacted by the American Congress.” In his 1936 speech accepting his party’s nomination, FDR would call the bankers and industrialists of those years “economic royalists” who falsely claim that “we seek to overthrow the institutions of America. What they really complain of is that we seek to take away their power.”
