Case Study: Tracey

Tracey is a twenty-one-year-old student diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Tracey can have difficulties with transitions and requires that her routine is predictable.

Tracey is a friendly young lady, but is frequently impulsive and this can result in grabbing and sometimes even pushing another peer.

Tracey’s dream is to attend college and work in an office like her father does. She can read at about a second grade level. Tracey needs reminders to choose appropriate clothing and change her clothes on a regular basis. She is able to complete her daily living skills relatively independently and follows directions when they are paired with pictures to help her understand the steps in completing more complicated tasks. She would like to share an apartment with a school friend when she graduates.

Instruction

For each of the following, include potential supports her family may provide. Identify some of the concerns or challenges that might be expressed by community members. Identify the role of educators in assisting Tracey to meet her goals.

Successful papers will be those that incorporate information from your readings with ideas of how those concepts can be applied to the case study. Each section should be about one page (4-6 pages total). Your Assignment should be double spaced, using 12 pt. Times New Roman font using APA format. Please use at least two sources and include citations in the body of the paper as appropriate.

Find and read an article about a new robot or one under development. Discuss as many of the following points as applicable. (If you omit any points please tell why!)  Be as specific as possible.
1.    What is its main purpose? Is its purpose for industry, private use, military, education, or another? Explain.
2.    How many degrees of freedom does the robot have? What are they? Is the robot holonomic? Redundant?
3.    Discuss the actuators/effectors: how many are there, what type (wheels, legs, grippers, etc.), what are their functions?
4.    Discuss the sensors:  what type(s), what are they used for?
5.    What type of control architecture is used? Why? (you may guess but explain your choice)
6.    What is the advantage of a robot over a machine (or human) in this application?
7.    What additional hardware and/or software is needed, if any, to make the robot (more) effective?
8.    Discuss its stability (dynamic vs. static) if applicable.
9.    What challenges do the creators face, i.e. what presents the most difficulty to the creator? (e.g. hardware, control, sensing, stability,  or something else)
10.    Does it have mass market appeal/potential? Explain. 
Please use an article from a newspaper, magazine, or other source. The article should be dated any time after Jan 2013. Print the article (if online) including its source and date, or cut out the article from a current periodical. Submit the article together with your project.
If any of these questions are not answered/discussed in your article, use your knowledge of robotics to make an educated guess, stating that the answer is your thoughts rather than what is stated in the article. It doesn’t matter if your answer is not correct, as long as you justify it!
Most questions will require 2 - 3 sentences. Please don’t exceed that unless absolutely necessary.
Please don’t use a robot we discussed in class: Big Dog, any of the DARPA vehicles, or Roomba. Otherwise you can use almost any other robot.
Include a title with the name of the robot if it has one. You may answer the questions in question/answer format (in full sentences) or in an essay. If you are writing an essay include notation indicating where the questions are answered. Be sure to answer all questions. Be specific but brief. Homework must be typed! No handwritten assignments will be accepted. Be sure to submit the article together with your assignment.

    Phase-5. Implementation - Operational System Development, product introduction, transition to operational system.

    16. Instructor will provide evaluation of the project progress, resolve problems, and provide guidance as to format and structure.  

    17. A rough draft of the final report will be prepared for discussion with the instructor. Students should discuss this draft with the instructor to assure that the stated objectives in the project proposal have been met. At this time, the consistency, quality, originality, and integrity of the project would also be evaluated.

    18. While students are completing the documentation of various phases they may refer to the textbook for completing critical tasks such as data modeling, process modeling, process decomposition, enterprise data model, repository, data collection, user interface, testing/evaluation, quality control, and project management. Textbook provides structured approach to systems development. Students will select appropriate reading from the textbook depending on the development phase.  

    19. Students will submit the final report (hard copy, electronic copy on USB drive, and e-mail the entire project) to the instructor. Please refer to “Additional Course Information-1” section in the syllabus for further directions to e-mail your documents. 

    20. Each student with the help of presentation system will explain the project to the class highlighting the unique characteristics of the project with an emphasis on problem solving techniques, design criteria, limitations and constraints, research methodologies, technology integration, quality control, migration process, process management, and the applicability to the real-life systems development. 

    21. After presentation, instructor will provide the feedback and if necessary, the changes will be made in the project accordingly.

    22. Students are responsible for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and format.

    23. Proofreading is the responsibility of the student.
