Introduction: For your project in this unit, you will be developing what is known as a strategic management action plan (MAP). When all the strategic planning is done, it is time for management action planning based upon our strategies. This is where many healthcare organizations of all types fall short. The same level of effort that went into creating the strategic plan needs to continue as we take action, measure progress, and reassess over time. Management action planning is a step-by-step approach developed to help healthcare leaders plan the action steps that will lead to positive change for our organizations.

The strategic plan sets the direction for us, and our MAPs get the work done, turning strategy into reality. Developing a MAP is a six-step process, and you will actually be practicing this MAP process as you create your project. Refer to the steps in your textbook for guidance. Some suggested MAP topics are provided here, and you are certainly free to propose your own topic. Perhaps you will choose something that truly needs to be addressed in your own organization. You may even find the MAP to be a valuable tool as you lead your own organization.

Suggested health care subjects include the topics listed below. Please select one of these topics, or a topic of your own choosing. Focus on identified problems and improvement opportunities, key issues for planning, and implementation via your MAP components.

Your project should be a minimum of three to four pages in length and should include a cover page and reference page (cover and reference pages do not count toward the minimum page requirement). You need to include at least one graph, table, or chart to identify, analyze, and interpret your data for key issues concerning your MAP components. Also, show how this information and technology supports your MAP components. To supplement your MAP, you should include at least four sources, one should be from the CSU Online Library, and you can include your textbook. References and citations must be provided using APA style. All sources used must be referenced; paraphrased and quoted material must have accompanying citations.

Utilizing this listing, choose one disease or condition to investigate.
After selecting the disease or condition, review information about it. Be sure to find creditable, reliable and up to date data sources. Examples include:

The ppt should be divided into slides covering each of the following ten topics. Your presentation can be more than nine slides if you need more than one slide for one of the sub-topics. Your presentation should not exceed 10 minutes in length.
Epidemiological data – Outline taken from the CCDM pages xxiii – not every disease or condition will meet all nine areas. If not, discuss the area as not applicable.

1. Identification 

Main clinical features and what differentiates it from others that may have a similar clinical picture.
Laboratory tests most commonly used to identify or confirm the agent
The Florida reporting timeline criteria
2. Infectious agent

The specific agent or agents causing the disease
Classification – Bacteria, Fungi, Parasite, Virus, Rickettsia or Prion
Important characteristics – Infectivity, Pathogenicity, Virulence, Toxicity, Invasiveness, and Antigenicity
3. Occurrence

Where the disease is known to occur
In which population groups it is most likely
Information on past and current outbreaks may also be included.
4. Reservoir

Person, animal, plant, substance— or combination of these—in which an infection agent normally lives and multiplies 
5. Mode of transmission

Mechanisms by which the infectious agent is spread to humans
6. Incubation period

Time interval between initial contact with the agent and the first appearance of symptoms 
7. Period of communicability

Time during which the infectious agent may be transferred directly or indirectly from an infected person to another person; from an infected animal to humans; or from an infected person to animals.

Goal

Write a 750-1,000-word essay that analyzes the rhetorical situation of a public document. This public document is the Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) website on Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) found at: http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/adhd/facts.html. Your analysis should include at least TWO scholarly sources outside of class texts.



Directions



Complete a close reading of the assigned public document. Then, write a cohesive essay that:

1.      Introduces and summarizes the CDC website on ADHD.

2.      Analyzes the rhetorical tools used on the site (here, you will want to incorporate ideas from your preanalysis below). For instance, your essay could analyze the CDC’s use of ethos, pathos, and logos.

3.      Evaluates the site’s effectiveness (again, ideas from your preanalysis below will be helpful).



This essay is NOT simply an expository or descriptive essay or an analysis of ADHD. It is an analysis of the site and how effectively the site uses rhetorical tools to get its point across.

·        You will receive completion points for the first draft based upon the successful submission of your draft. 

·        Because your first draft is a completion grade, do not assume that this grade reflects or predicts the final grade. If you do not consider your instructor’s comments, you may be deducted points on your final draft.



Final Draft Grading



The essay will be graded using a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the assignment criteria and expectations.

·        These sources should be used to support any claims you make and should be present in the text of the essay.

Preparing to Write the Essay



Read the site closely:

1.      Read the webpage on Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) found at  http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/adhd/facts.html

o  Do a first reading that uses underlining, annotation, and summary to make sure you understand what the writer is saying. Go back to any sections that need clarification.

o  On a second reading, pay attention to what the writer(s) of the CDC site is doing by describing the writer’s strategy.



Conduct a preanalysis:

1.      Use your close reading to analyze the rhetorical situation of the site.

2.      Here are some questions to guide your analysis.

3.      You do NOT need to answer all of them—pick three that make the most sense to you. Your close reading will help you generate ideas for your essay.

Draft the essay:

Once you’ve completed the pre-analysis, draft the essay. The essay should include:

1.      Header, essay title, heading in GCU Style

2.      An introduction paragraph with a thesis statement

3.      At least three body paragraphs

4.      A conclusion paragraph



Also, you will need to include a References page and in-text citations formatted in GCU Style with at least TWO scholarly sources outside of class texts.
