Create a PowerPoint (12–14 slides) to present your application of developmental theory to a case study that you have selected and analyzed.

Psychology professionals, such as caseworkers and therapists, often think in terms of human development when assessing problems that individuals, couples, or families bring to them. A caseworker, therapist, or other psychology professionals may take notes to document the situation and make interpretations and recommendations. This assessment will give you the opportunity to apply developmental theories in a hypothetical clinical setting while imagining yourself in one of these roles.

Asssessment Instructions
Preparation

Launch and explore the following multimedia piece. After you have reviewed the two case studies, select one to analyze.

Emilio: Case Study 1

Emilio is an 18-year-old senior in high school. It is the end of the school year, and after feeling excited to graduate most of this past year, lately he is not sure he is ready to leave high school. He has been feeling more irritable than usual and has been especially grouchy with his family. Everything his parents tell him annoys him.

He misses his girlfriend, who recently broke up with him. He is supposed to be leaving for college in August, but he is feeling nervous about it. Before, he was convinced he wanted to go into engineering, but now he is not so sure. He feels pressure to go to college, but right now all he wants to do is stay in the area and get a job and an apartment so he can hang out with his friends who are not going away to college.

Sometimes he is so frustrated he feels the urge to break things. A few days ago when no one else was home, he punched the doorframe of his bedroom.

Case study 2: Brenda

Brenda is 43 years old and wants to make some life changes. She is unhappy with her career in marketing and with her relationship status. She was divorced five years ago from Robert, whom she met during her senior year of college. They had delayed marriage until after Robert finished medical school, and were married when Brenda was 27. They had discussed having children, but Robert never felt that the time was right.

Even though Brenda feels alone, she is not comfortable dating. She would like to go back to school, but is not sure what career she is interested in. Plus, she has been spending a great deal of time taking care of her aging mother, with whom she has had a strained relationship over the years.

Lately, she has been thinking something is wrong with her. The kind of identity issues she is facing seem more typical of a teenager, not a 43-year-old woman. She is beginning to withdraw and to feel lonely. She feels like she has failed compared to acquaintances who are married, have children, and seem to be enjoying their careers.

Next, imagine that you are a caseworker or any other psychology professional gathering information from a client represented by either. Based on the information presented, consider the developmental challenges the person is facing. Then identify at least two developmental theories (such as attachment, cognitive development, moral development, psychosocial development, et cetera), and apply the theories to understand the person in the scenario.
While it is not possible to fully understand the person in the scenario based on the limited information provided, there are a number of developmental theories that can provide context and offer a possible framework for understanding the person's attitudes and behaviors.

Instructions

Based on the scenario and theories you chose for this assessment, create a PowerPoint presentation (12–14 slides) using the Assessment 2 Template [PPTX], in which you complete the following:

Give a brief overview of the chosen scenario in your own words.
Provide an overview of the theories you have selected to apply to the scenario.
Describe the stage or stages of the theory that are most applicable to the current phase of life of the person discussed in the case study. Describe in some details the stage of life according to the theory. (For example, in Erikson's psychosocial development theory a child who is 4 years old is in the stage of "initiative versus guilt.")
Search the library for at least two scholarly (peer-reviewed) articles that provide research about the concerns faced by the person in the chosen case study.
Describe how the research from the articles applies to the person in the scenario you selected.

Apply the theories to describe how they help us to better understand this particular person at the current point of life based on the concerns and their impact on the person's well-being.

Your presentation should include the following:

20th Century Public Health Achievements

According to the CDC, public health has been credited with adding 25 years to the life expectancy of people living in the U.S. in the 20th century. But, how? Since it can be difficult for the general public to understand the impact of public health interventions, the CDC created Ten Great Public Health Achievements in the 20th Century as a very helpful overview of all the great things public health has been able to achieve.
Vaccination to reduce epidemic diseases
At the beginning of the 20th century, infectious diseases such as smallpox, measles, diphtheria, and pertussis were widely prevalent. Since there were few effective measures available, death tolls were high. Both the development and promotion of vaccinations against preventable diseases has resulted in dramatic declines in morbidity and mortality and even results in the eradication of smallpox.
Improved motor vehicle safety
Since 1925, there has been a 90% decrease in the annual death rate due to motor vehicle travel. This is particularly impressive given the number of motor vehicles, drivers, and miles traveled in motor vehicles have all increased dramatically since 1925.Some of the biggest interventions include regulations developed and enforced regarding safety belts, alcohol-impaired drivers, young drivers, pedestrians, and child safety and booster seats.
Safer workplaces
Data from CDC's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) National Traumatic Occupational Fatalities (NTOF) surveillance system indicate that the annual number of work-related deaths decreased 28% from 1980 to 1995 with a 43% decrease in occupational injuries during the same time.
Control of infectious diseases
The leading causes of death in 1900 were pneumonia, tuberculosis (TB), and diarrhea and enteritis whereas in 1997, 4.5% of deaths were attributable to pneumonia, influenza, and HIV infection. Sanitation and hygiene, vaccination, and antibiotics are among the control measures responsible for this marked decrease. Who knew handwashing could be so powerful!
Decline in death from cardiovascular disease
While deaths due to infectious death have gone down dramatically, heart disease has been the leading cause of death for most of the 20th century. Since 1950, age-adjusted death rates from cardiovascular disease have been cut by more than half. Some of the key public health factors contributing to this decline include the decline in tobacco use, changes in the U.S. diet, and better early detection and treatment of those at risk of cardiovascular disease (e.g. individuals with hypertension, high cholesterol, etc.)
Food Safety
Contaminated food and water resulted in many foodborne infections in early in the 20th century. Advances, such as refrigeration, pasteurization, pest control, animal control, and food safety regulations that promoted better hygiene and sanitation practices all contributed to decreases in foodborne infections.
Improvements in maternal and child health
Childbirth use to come with great risk to many mothers and infants. Over the span of the century, the infant mortality rate declined greater than 90% and the maternal mortality rate declined almost 99%. Improvements in nutrition, standards of living, access to health care, and surveillance and monitoring of disease contributed to reducing risks to mothers and infants.
Family planning
Better family planning interventions have resulted in longer intervals between births and smaller family sizes, both of which have been associated with improved maternal and child health outcomes.
Fluoridation of drinking water
At the beginning of the century, extensive dental caries was common in the U.S. with tooth extraction being the main treatment option available. Several studies have suggested that water fluoridation has contributed to reductions in dental caries when compared to communities without fluoridated water.
Reductions in prevalence of tobacco use
Smoking has been associated with a number of morbidities including cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and low birth weight. According to the CDC, it is the leading preventable cause of death and disability in the United States. Due to massive public health efforts that include smoking cessation interventions and regulation of the purchase and use of tobacco, there have been substantial reductions in smoking.
