Purpose: The goal of this exercise is to observe a 'cultural scene' as an anthropologist would (i.e. based on everything you have learned in the course to-date). The student will analyze their observations in terms of themes from the subfield of cultural anthropology such as how it helps frame our societies (family, lifestyle, lineage, language and communication) and, in some ways, its evolution. Description: Culture as we have discussed in our readings is an incredible advantage that has allowed humans to enter almost every niche in nature. The development and maintenance of culture is what sets humans apart from other species. Culture varies by time and location. For this assignment, students will be observing a particular setting for 25 minutes, writing up your observations, and then analyzing them. Listen to anthropologist Donna Rosh give you some pointers for people-watching as an anthropologist (or read the script). Watch anthropologist Jennifer Cramer give you some pointers about studying behavior in primates, tips which also work for studying human behavior. Directions for 4-6 page Assignment: Choose a time and location for where/when you are going to conduct your observations of an ethnographic scene (mall, public transportation, coffee shop, etc.). Go to the specified location and proceed with your observations. Find a place to sit quietly for 25 minutes and simply watch what is going on. Do not talk to or interview people during this time. Take notes (handwritten recommended). Include details about the scene itself (time of day, lighting, furniture, plants, sounds, temperature, smell, vibe/energy, etc), with focus on the details about the people around you (their characteristics, their behavior). At this time, you should start to think about concepts that you've learned in class that fit with your observations. This step is critical. Write a 4-6 page paper about your observations Your paper should: Include a ‘thick description’ of the location with clear detail of your observations Analyze your observations, identifying and defining four anthropological concepts that fit your observations. Definitions should be supported with cited sources. Analyze how these anthropological concepts fit your observations. Reflect on this activity. What was it like to observe other people through the lens of an anthropologist? Include your field notes at the end of your paper What is an anthropological concept? Anthropological concepts are anthropological terms and ideas. Examples of some that we've studied include: ethnocentrism, ethnicity, reciprocity, kinship, language and communication. You should not use this exact list of four concepts and expect them to fit your observation scene. You may, of course, use others - depending on what concepts are relevant to your observation. We also have two examples to share with you from anthropologists- one from Jennifer Cramer's fieldwork in The Gambia and one from James Turner's fieldwork in Mexico. One common misstep is to apply the four subfields of anthropology or to apply the four parts of the definition of culture. Conclude with a discussion of and reflection on your experience of the situation. For example you might write how you felt when you started to detect a pattern in characteristics and/or behavior.

The Dispossession of the First Nations in the US
Link to video https://vimeopro.com/octapixx/foxtel-3/video/54811286 OPEN "the dispossession of the First Nations" first , and follow this
After watching the documentary film and reading McDonnell carefully, discuss the centrality of land allotment in the policy of assimilation of Indigenous Nations into white culture and the propagation of capitalism, an economic system that is based on private individual property, as opposed to communal property (i.e. land owned by a group, instead of particular individuals, as is the case with Indigenous peoples).
In your answer, stay focused on the centrality of land in the preservation of Indigenous culture. In other words, Indigenous cultures, in particular, their economic systems and spirituality, are very much tied to the land: when Indigenous nations are dispossessed from their land, their cultural identity is jeopardized, due to the interruption of certain ancestral practices.

This assignment is an application of the concepts learned in Ch. 1 to your own life along with practicing Ch. 2 concepts in the analysis of a peer-reviewed academic article. Make sure you understand the vocabulary terms from these PowerPoints and ask if you have questions. Do not copy and paste the information – put everything into your own words. After reading the assigned article ‘Sense of Peer Acceptance’, answer the below questions: 1.) What Topic did the researchers select to study? Why did they think this was an important topic to study? (When I was a freshman, I really struggled with feelings of not belonging etc. – my thoughts/concerns created a lot of stress for me!) 2.) In the Literature Review of the article, what were some of the most important ideas? Do you feel that these concepts are relevant to your own life (why or why not)? 3.) Using your Sociological Imagination, consider how society has influenced how you think about and communicate with other people. Do you ever make any moralistic judgements or assumptions about others? Where did you get these ideas from (family, friends, media, school, religion, etc.)? Has anyone else ever made a moralistic judgement or assumption about you? How did you feel about those experiences (were you happy, sad, scared, angry, etc.)? 4.) Personal Sociology is the process of recognizing the impact our individual position has on who we are and how we think and act. What is your place in the social world (include: race, ethnicity, religion, social class, physical ability, appearance, etc.)? Do you have any privileges that you take for granted? Does your place in the social world impact your viewpoint or beliefs about others (why or why not)? 5.) In the Functionalist theoretical perspective (macro orientation), society is viewed as an ordered system of interrelated social institutions that each meets the needs of society by performing specific functions for the whole system (society). What have been positive influences on you by your family, cultural beliefs/expectations, religion, education, friends, and different media sources? What do you think works well? What are some of the biggest lessons/best advice you have learned? 6.) In the Conflict theory perspective (macro orientation), social institutions are criticized and the focus is on what isn’t working well or is problematic, particularly in regard to inequality (ageism, sexism, racism, nativism, classism, ableism, etc.). What do you think could be done better or improved in your family, cultural beliefs/expectations, religion, education, friends, and different media sources? What do you think could work better? What are some of the biggest challenges that you have faced? 7.) In the Symbolic interactionist perspective (micro orientation), the reality is viewed as a social construct that we create through our interpretation of symbols, such as language, which is created through and influenced by our social interactions with others. What messages have you been given about college? Where did you get your ideas from? Do you feel that you fit in and are there any groups that you think would not fit in? Why or why not? Have any of your ideas about college changed over time? Identify a socially relevant problem that you observe in your immediate community and/or in the global community that is not related to your current area of practice and which is traditionally explained from a mentalistic, structuralist, or essentialist perspective. Give an overview, from a radical behaviorist/selectionist reinterpretation and the advantages conferred by a behavioral approach. Describe what type of group effort must occur for the identified problem to improve, how your proposal applies principles of cultural design, and how it would contribute to the design of culture. In addition to supporting your writing with Skinner’s Science and Human Behavior, and Biglan’s Changing Cultural Practices and other assigned readings, identify a minimum of 5 additional peer-reviewed articles that support this as a socially relevant issue that applies to a significant percentage of the population and supports your proposal for addressing the problem given what you have read in this course on cultural design. Option #1 The social problem of ‘inequality’ has been called one of the defining issues of our times. In your view, which one of the classical sociological theorists' ideas that we covered in lecture (Marx, Weber, Durkheim, Simmel) is most useful for understanding the persistence of social inequality? Apply and discuss at least one of the theorists' concepts to illustrate your argument.
This essay must be between 700-800 words. Submit your finished essays to Canvas before 9am, Friday, February 7th.
Option #2 I want you to consider the following scenario: Karl Marx and Max Weber walk into a cafeteria. They sit at the same table. And they begin talking with each other.
What would Marx and Weber talk about? What do their theories about society have in common? How do their theories differ?
The goal here is to pretend you are observing/overhearing a back-and-forth conversation (at the lunch table) between two of sociology’s classical theorists. As you construct this imaginary dialogue, you must demonstrate a thorough understanding of each theorist’s key ideas. Your creativity will be rewarded.
