BOOK CTITIQUE INSTRUCTIONS

You will complete a Book Critique on the Schreiner and Wright textbook.

The Purpose of a Theological Critique
In preparing a critique, you must approach a book or other resource with a critical eye to thoroughly interact with the author’s theology and worldview. Since you are not considered an authority, personal references, opinions, attitudes, values, etc., must be withheld from this process except where suggested below.

Formatting Guidelines
(Refer to the current Turabian manual for more details.)
Since this is a graduate-level course, papers must be written to a near-thesis standard. That is, minimum format standards must be met, as defined below. English grammar and spelling must be graduate level. Qualities valued include clarity, succinctness, and precision.

Your paper must include the following:

•    Cover page
•    Table of contents (must show a clearly defined outline that will also be visible throughout the paper)
•    1-inch margins
•    Double spacing
•    Times New Roman, 12-point font
•    Indented paragraphs of 5 spaces or 0.6 inches (the thesis standard is 5/8 of an inch)
•    No extra line spacing between paragraphs
•    Underlined or bolded section headings (must follow table of contents)
•    Page numbers
•    Bibliography
•    1,500–1650 words (excluding cover page, table of contents, and bibliography)
•    At least 5 scholarly sources in the bibliography

Breakdown of a Critique
I.    Introduction (1/2 page maximum):
•    It must be a single but strong paragraph that reveals what you intend to show to the reader. This is your “thesis statement.”
•    It must include a brief review of background data about the book, the author, and the topic discussed in the book (where relevant).

II.    Brief Summary (1–1 and 1/2 pages; must not be more than 20% of your critique):
•    The idea is not to summarize each chapter; instead, you will capture the main idea(s) of the book along with the underlying subtopics and themes.
•    This must be a brief overview of what the book is all about: the issues, themes, and solutions that the author is setting forth.
•    This section gauges your ability to identify the main purpose of a book and differentiate between central and peripheral ideas.

III.    Critical Interaction with the Author’s Work (3–5 pages; around 70% of your paper):
•    The point is not whether you agree with the author’s perspective but whether you recognize what the author intended and what theological issues might be at stake.
•    You must document your assessment of the author throughout the paper. If a judgment is made with respect to the author’s opinion, then you must give an example, along with a footnote, to designate where this can be observed.

NOTE: YOUR CRITIQUE PAPER MUST THOROUGHLY ADDRESS THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:

•    Where is the author coming from, and what are the theological and biblical perspectives from which he or she approaches the subject?
•    What is the author’s goal?
•    Does the author prove his or her point? How? Why? Why not?
•    What are the strengths and weaknesses of the author’s arguments?
•    Are there any published reviews of this work? What are they? Did you observe any relevant issues or questions raised by these reviews? Explain. What important works have been written on this same subject? How does this author compare to others in terms of content, approach, style, etc.?
•    Finally—and this is where your perspective is admissible—how might a person (e.g., pastor, therapist, lay leader, scholar) appropriate the ideas conveyed in this work? For example, if the book relates to the doctrines of man or sin, how do the ideas “fit” with the real world of ministry or relationships? Or, if it were a more scholarly work, how and where would it be useful?

IV.    Conclusion (1/2 page maximum):
•    This is where you bring together all your interactions with the book and conclude your critique by conveying how well you think the author achieved his or her goals and to what degree the stated purpose was achieved.
•    If you come from a different theological persuasion (e.g., the author is Calvinist or Arminian, dispensationalist or covenantist, and you are not), how does the author’s opinion conflict with your preconceptions? Does the book make you think differently? In what ways? Does the author leave you with any questions? What are they?

ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FROM THE INSTRUCTOR THAT YOU MUST FOLLOW FOR THE PAPER

Book Critique Due  - Follow the instructions carefully.  *****Nb. You do not have a choice as to what book you can critique.******  You will complete a book critique on the  Believer ’ s Baptism  text. This should be between five and seven pages in length and contain at least five citations excluding the main text. Please submit this assignment through  SafeAssign.

NOTE 1:  The text (body) of your critique is NOT to exceed 7 pages.
NOTE 2:  A frequent mistake students make is not to include any peer reviews of the book in their critique.  Be sure to include in your review another author’s review of this book or else you will lose points.

VERY IMPORTANT BELOW INSTRUCTIONS

CAUTION:  4 More Mistakes:  One common mistake students make is not capitalizing Bible or Scripture.  They are the proper names of a book and should always be capitalized, whether other writers do it or not.  The second common mistake is not proof reading the critique carefully before submitting it.  English grammar, idiom, and spelling must be up to graduate level. Qualities valued include clarity, succinctness, and precision. The third common mistake is that no in-text referencing is allowed in this paper.  Use footnotes to indicate pages in the book that you are quoting. The fourth common mistake is the use of first and/or second person pronouns (I, me, we, you, etc.). Avoid these completely for my class.

Discussion Board Forum 4 QUESTIONS

Thread: In the 21st century, the study of Ecclesiology has now taken center stage. In general, the success and proliferation of alternative church arrangements through the use of technology, namely multi-site churches and Internet churches, have challenged the definition of church.
In particular, the church’s relationship to the state in the area of homosexual marriage has been challenged, and the boundaries of religious freedom have been tested.
Once you have read the Brown text,

1. Interact with 1 of his "biblical responses" by making a case for it in your own words NOTE :(These biblical responses are found at the beginning of each chapter).

2.  Choose the chapter that was most enlightening to you in your particular context and specify which chapter you are addressing in your thread.

Discussion Board 1 OBST520 INSTRUCTIONS AND QUESTIONS TO BE ANSWERED

Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will read articles associated with each Discussion Board Forum and answer the questions found in the corresponding instructions for his or her thread. The student will post a thread interacting in a critical, but collegial manner with the associated article.

INTERPRETING PROVERBS

Read the article “Interpreting Proverbs” by Dr. Robert V. McCabe.  Based on the hermeneutical principles of the article, complete the following four assignments.
The assignments should meet Turabian format. Discussion board assignments are to be thoughtful and analytical. A discussion board is not an email or a blog. The discussion board should meet graduate-level standards for writing and research.  In your post, provide an outline that represents parts 1-3.  The outline should provide a separate numerical for each example. This provides a format for the professor to be able to grade each component

Example: Part 1: Intensification of Proverbs
    1
    2
    3, etc.
    Part 2: Contrast in Proverbs
    1
    2, etc.

Part 1: Intensification in Proverbs
Read Proverbs 2.  Identify 10 examples of intensification and write a short paragraph to explain how Solomon used intensification in each verse (one paragraph for each example).
Example:
Proverbs 2:1 The first line exhorts the son (reader) to receive the words. The intensification is seen in that “receive” is elevated to “treasure”, and the words are defined more clearly as “my commands” which must be internalized.

Part 2: Contrast in Proverbs
Read Proverbs 10: Identify 10 examples of “contrast” and write a short paragraph to explain how Solomon used contrast in each verse (one paragraph for each example).
Example:
Proverbs 10:25 The first line states that a “whirlwind” (troubles in life) will cause the wicked to be “no more” (destroyed). The second line states that the righteous has an everlasting foundation which will keep them through the trials of life.  The contrast is between two lifestyles and two outcomes.

Part 3: Descriptive and Prescriptive Proverbs
Read Proverbs 23: Select 5 paragraphs in this chapter. Paragraphs are usually marked in a translation by a bold number or indentation. Review the paragraphs based on the definitions that are provided in Dr. McCabe’s article. Write a short paragraph on the descriptive and prescriptive aspects of each paragraph.
Example:
The first two lines of Proverbs 23:24 describe the joy and gladness that a father experiences when he has a righteous and wise son. The next two lines of Proverbs 23:25 are prescriptive as the reader is commanded to make his parents glad and happy because he fulfills the description of the first two lines, i.e. he lives a righteous and wise life.

NOTE: Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, you will read articles associated with each Discussion Board Forum and answer the questions found in the corresponding instructions for your thread. You will post a thread of 400–600 words interacting in a critical, but collegial manner with the associated article.

OLD TESTAMENT EXEGETICAL COMMENTARY: JONAH – TITLE PAGE AND BIBLIOGRAPHY INSTRUCTIONS
This module/week, you must submit a title page as well as a bibliography containing a minimum of 10 scholarly resources. Both of these must be in current Turabian format.

The bibliography must represent exegetical commentaries and journal articles that provide a foundation for research. The better your resources, the better your commentary. It is best to list 10 resources so that you make sure that you have the minimum of 8. The professor will provide you feedback as to which sources are acceptable and which are unacceptable. Course textbooks cannot be counted towards the 6 resources. Your resources must be less than 20 years old and must provide exegetical comments based on paragraph or verse units.
These resources must not be primarily devotional in nature. Websites and internet blogs that are not peer-reviewed are unacceptable. The list of resources must contain only 1 general commentary of the entire Old Testament (OT) (ex. Bible Knowledge Commentary OT). It is best to use journal articles and commentaries that focus on detailed exegesis of Jonah. These resources will make it easier for you to write a substantive commentary.

Commentaries such as NICOT, Expositors Bible, MacArthur, New American Commentary, NIV Application, and Word Biblical are good examples.

There are Bible software programs that provide many of these sources as e-books. Journal articles can be accessed through the Jerry Falwell Library via the ATLA databases. The LU library staff is available to help you. There are Liberty University videos to teach you how to access the library.

NOTE: Use the  Jerry Falwell Library via the Atla databases to get your sources which is atleast 10 Sources for the assignment please.

OLD TESTAMENT EXEGETICAL COMMENTARY: JONAH – INTRODUCTION AND OUTLINE
Like 40% of the Old Testament (OT), Jonah is a historical narrative. Historical narratives must not be allegorized or spiritualized because these approaches neglect the authorial meaning and historical context. Historical narratives record what happened and not necessarily what should have happened.
Most historical narratives have at least 3 components:
1) Characters (protagonist, antagonist);
2) A plot, which is often a crisis; and
3) A plot resolution.

In OT biblical literature, there are 3 levels of interpretive understanding for historical narratives:
1) The meaning of the text from the original author to the original recipients within their historical and culture context;
2) The meaning of the book within the canonical framework of God’s disclosure of Himself and His promised Messiah to humanity through the Abrahamic, Davidic, and Mosaic covenants by which He establishes Israel, resulting in the recognition and praise of His eternal glory (some call this salvation-history); and
3) The application of the text to Christians, by which the first 2 levels are understood within the framework of the New Covenant (Romans 15:4).

NOTE AND READ THE BELOW TO  DO THE ASSIGNMENT

READ THROUGH THE BOOK OF JONAH IN THE BIBLE 2 TIMES AND IN 1 SITTING. THEN ANSWER THE BELOW QUESTIONS:
By taking notes with verse citations. The introduction must answer the following questions in short paragraphs that provide the historical background and setting of the book. This is not an introduction to a sermon or thesis statement. You are introducing the contextual background of the book so that the reader is prepared to understand the development of your commentary.
1. What was the historical background for the book? (Ex. Nineveh was a great city, Jonah 1:1).
2. What were the prevailing conditions for the people? (Ex. A storm at sea that was caused by the Lord, Jonah 1:4).

Read through Jonah 2 more times in 1 sitting. Answer the following questions by taking notes with verse citations.
3. Who are the main characters in the book? Is there 1 main character that stands out? Explain why you selected a particular main character. Just because the book is titled “Jonah” does not mean that Jonah must be the main character. The main character is most often the person who is the focus of the entire story.
4. What is the main subject of the book, or what is the author talking about? The main subject is the argument of the book. This is not the main application of the book, but the main subject from the original author to the original recipients. If this were a newspaper, it would be the main headline of the story. The video presentations for this course provide examples.
5. What themes are developed in the book? Identify these themes and list each occurrence. Pay special attention to the meaning of names and titles. Use a Bible dictionary to examine these words.
Remember, you are gathering exegetical information about Jonah as a basis for producing your exegetical commentary and outline. You are seeking to immerse your mind in the content of the story. You want to prayerfully read and meditate on the text. You are putting your feet into the sands of time and seeking to understand this historical narrative from the original author to the original recipients.
6. Read through the book again. What are the major divisions of the book? Sometimes a book is divided geographically, by characters, by time, by themes, or by settings. For the purpose of course continuity, the main divisions are chapters: 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Give the major divisions a sentence summary. What is the author talking about? Your introduction must be at least 200 words.

Read through Jonah again. Keep in mind what your main subject is and how it might be developing.

Write a summary statement for each of the following paragraphs. What is the main content of each paragraph?

Paragraphs are the main units for exegesis. For the purpose of course continuity, the main paragraph units are chapters: 1:1–3, 1:4–6, 1:7–9, 1:10–14, 1:15–17; 2:1–9, 2:10, 3:1–4; 3:5–9, 3:10; 4:1–4, 4:5–8, and 4:9–11. You are summarizing the main content of each paragraph with a short sentence (8–12 words on average). These summaries are not homiletical, alliterated titles or exhortations of application, but statements that encapsulate the message of the paragraph.

When you have completed this component, you will have an introduction and exegetical outline that looks something like the following.

1.    Introduction (Write a short paragraph for each of the following):
    1.1    Historical Background
    1.2    Prevailing Conditions
    1.3     Main Characters
    1.4    Major Argument
    1.5    Major Themes

2.    Exegetical Outline
    2.1    Major Summary Statement 1:1–17
        2.1.1    Summary Statement 1:1–3
        2.1.2    Summary Statement 1:4-6
        2.1.3    Summary Statement 1:7-9
        2.1.4    Summary Statement 1:10-14
        2.1.5    Summary Statement 1:15-17
    2.2    Major Summary Statement 2:1-10
        2.2.1    Summary Statement 2:1-9
        2.2.2    Summary Statement 2:10

    3    Major Summary Statement 3:1–10
        3.3.1    Summary Statement 3:1–4
        3.3.2    Summary Statement 3:5-9
        3.3.3    Summary Statement 3:10
    4    Major Summary Statement 4:1–11
        4.4.1    Summary Statement 4:1–4
        4.4.2    Summary Statement 4:5-8
        4.4.3    Summary Statement 4:9-11

This outline becomes the framework for your commentary. The outline must be exegetical and not homiletical. Avoid alliteration or creative titles. You are seeking to capture and understand the exegetical content of the book by means of each paragraph. You must engage the language of the text in producing your summary statements. (Ex. Jonah flees the presence of the Lord and sails to Tarshish 1:1–3). The summary statements must be 1 sentence that averages about 8–12 words. Use current Turabian format for the entire assignment.

When you have completed your outline, go back and review all of your statements to make sure that your sentence summaries are supporting the main divisions and argument of the book.

COMMENTARY PAPER INSTRUCTIONS

OLD TESTAMENT EXEGETICAL COMMENTARY: JONAH – COMMENTARY PART 1

You are now ready to write your exegetical commentary on Jonah chapters 1–2 based on your exegetical outline. The 2 chapters must be equally addressed throughout the commentary. The exegetical outline is the framework for your commentary.
The commentary must describe as clearly and concisely as possible what the passage says and what it meant to the original readers.
You are not writing a sermon; you are writing a commentary. You can produce sermons from the commentary, but the commentary is not sermonic
You will write the application portion of this paper at the end of the assignment.
Read through your sources and highlight insightful comments that you want to include in your commentary.
You will need to be selective so that the commentary is not primarily a string of quotes. If you are using digital media, you can cut and paste these comments into your outline.
You must integrate at least 4 of the 6 scholarly resources from the bibliography assignment in a way that represents balance by having your citations evenly distributed throughout your commentary.
Make sure that you provide proper citations and footnotes for all sources.
Your commentary must resemble a smaller version of the Bible Knowledge Commentary OT or other one-volume, exegetical commentaries that emphasize the paragraph units. This must be 700–750 words and in current Turabian format.
