The purpose of a comparison study is to analyze two items seeking differentiation and commonality. Through the process of comparing each facet of the two items, it is often possible to identify areas where both products perform at a similar ratio of efficacy. Also, comparative studies often yield insights which highlight areas where one product excels and another is deficient.

Identify a pair of organizations in the same (or similar) industry and compare their operations strategies. In this comparison, assess the strengths and weaknesses of each company and give your opinions on the appropriateness of the operations strategy of each company. Also provide your opinions on the relative competitive strengths of each company going forward in time, and the role that operations play in each company's competitive strengths and weaknesses. You may use public or private companies, large or small, foreign or domestic. (Examples of company pairs might be: HP/Dell, Honda/Toyota, FedEx/UPS.)

Below are suggested items from which you should select at least 10 to address in your comparison:

Six Sigma
Management Leadership
Production Costs
Operations Strategy
Forecasting
Benchmarking
Scatter
Pareto
Fishbone
Process Strategies
Supply Chain
Scheduling
Decision Tree
Decision Table
Your introduction/conclusion should be a true comparison contrast derived from your research instead of an opinion paper, but you can offer up success suggestions in your conclusion. Use the third-person in the paper, and make sure to use in-text citations and quotes according to APA requirements.

Length: 10–12 pages, double-spaced, 12 point font, title page, and reference page. A minimum of 10 references is expected.

Support your statements with evidence from the Required Studies and your research. Cite and reference your sources in APA style.

There were several topics that had different information presented in the first half of this Organizational Behavior course.  First, we have to remember that when studying organizational behavior we have to be studying humans as they relate in organizations to a situation.  Considering this, information relating to a Diagnostic Model of Managing Human Resources (Milkovich and Boudreau) was presented in class.  As mentioned in class, the Diagnostic Model, in essence, describes a “SWOT Analysis” that many of you encountered in other courses in the past.

Secondly, a conceptual “model of the organization as a social system” (Jacob W Getzels and Egon G Guba) was presented in class to illustrate the importance of the nomothetic and ideographic dimensions in an organization.

Third, information regarding the components of mission were presented in class via lecture and brief discussion/presentation of military Mission Essential Tasks.

The essay questions below require you to think about the information presented and apply the concepts that you learned to the situation.  Make sure you read each question and supply answers to the questions.  Do not simply describe the models or theories – describe how the models/theories apply to the situation.

The situation is based on an article from the Wall Street Journal entitled “Army At Odds: West Point Posting Becomes A Minefield for ‘Warrior” Officer”.  This article provides a description of a real situation that occurred at West Point in the 1990s.  You will need to undertake additional research of the situation – this is strongly recommended!  Remember you need to determine the context (external environment, internal environment, organizational mission, people, etc.) as it relates to the situation – not as it relates to West Point today!  Some additional material is provided to you as references – you may incorporate/reference them in your answers.

Answer the following questions:

A.    What Would You Have Done?
Carefully assess the situation and explain how you would have handled the situation if you were Col. Hallums? Consider this is the 1990s not 2019 so many of the cultural norms and legal ramifications are different.  How would you have handled the situation if you were one of the officials making the hiring decision at the Academy?

B.    Current Applications to Your Organization
Suppose Col. Hallums were assigned to a similar position (leadership of a department) at your organization in the late 1990s and today.  Please take a few sentences to describe your organization. Compare the two settings (1990s) and (2020).  How would his decisions be similar or different?  What would be the repercussions of his management style at the organization in Orlando?

In this assignment, you’ll need to decide whether Patty Plaintiff has any legal claims arising from a series of unfortunate events.  After reading the scenario, answer the questions that follow, making sure to fully explain the basis of your decision.

Patty Plaintiff is shopping at her favorite store, Cash Mart. She is looking for a new laptop, but she can’t find one she likes. Then, realizing that she is going to be late for an appointment, she attempts to leave the store, walking very fast. However, before she can leave, she is stopped by a security guard who accuses her of shoplifting. Patty, who has taken nothing, denies any wrong doing. The officer insists and takes Patty to a small room in the back of the store. The guard tells Patty that if she attempts to leave the room she will be arrested and sent to jail. At this point, the guard leaves the room. Patty is scared and waits in the room for over an hour until the manager comes in and apologizes and tells Patty that she is free to go.

About this same time, Gerry Golfer is hitting golf balls in his backyard. Gerry decides to break out his new driver and hits a golf ball out of his backyard into the Cash Mart parking lot. The golf ball hits Patty Plaintiff on the head and knocks her unconscious just as she is leaving the store.

Five days later, after recovering from her injuries, Patty returns to work at Acme Corporation. Unfortunately, she used her company email to send her mom a personal email about her injury despite being aware that Acme’s company policy prohibits use of company email for personal communication. Patty’s supervisor, Barry Bossley, discovers Patty’s violation and Patty is reprimanded. When Patty goes home she uses her personal computer to post disparaging comments about her boss and Acme Corporation on social media. The next day Patty is fired from her job.

In a 6-10 paragraph paper, answer the following question: What types of legal claims could Patty make against Cash Mart, Gerry, and Acme Corporation? Consider the following:

Some Helpful Advice

Refer to and use conceptual tools and frameworks explicitly. This will help convey your understanding of the material and will economize on space.

Make a point AND provide reasons/evidence to support it. Do NOT simply describe (i.e., provide a narration of what happened in the case), but seek to analyze (i.e., provide an explanation of why it happened or what effect you hope to elicit) using specific information from the case and/or analytic and conceptual tools from the course.  NOTE:  you can do this effectively and still be succinct—explicitly using course terms, concepts and frameworks actually facilitates your ability to do this.

Demonstrate your ability to apply the readings, lectures, and class discussions in accurate, selective, and creative ways to diagnose, analyze, and remedy organizational problems. ACCURATE means using the conceptual tools in a correct and consistent manner.  SELECTIVE means using the conceptual tools that give you the most leverage, rather than core dumping all possible ideas.  CREATIVE means extending or applying the material in new ways.

Make sure to cite your sources (i.e., case or course readings). Feel free to use footnotes or end notes to reference readings and source material rather than inline citation if this helps you to economize on space.  APA style citation format is required.  Links to websites with instructions and examples of this style are provided in the Pages section and Course Resources module on Canvas.
