Answer the following in a well-written, formal, argumentative-persuasive essay, using specifics as evidence, and providing citations.

Some historians have argued that the English colonies in North America developed along economic lines and they emphasize the significance of the, staple crop agriculture, trade, the search for mineral wealth, and other material factors in their interpretations.
Other scholars insist that freedom, especially religious liberty, was the primary motivation behind English colonization.
Still others argue for the “push” factors rather than the “pull” of the New World, contending that the European context explains English colonization, as the Protestant Reformation, the Age of Religious Wars, competition for empire, and other issues were behind it all.
Other historians have argued for complexity, seeing a mix of motives that were intertwined and interconnected.
Explain the development of the English colonies in North America from c. 1607 to c. 1720. How and why did the English colonize territories in North America? Were economics the most important factor or did religion matter more? What role did the Native Americans play? Did individuals and their choices matter? However you answer, be sure to provide specific examples and explain them in your analysis.

Please find below the prompt for the coming assignment for next week.  Some of this may seem clearer after we take some time to discuss the readings in class Thursday. I'll post this as an assignment after we discuss it in class.

To get started on your short essay assignment for next week, I’d like you to first consider how stable the Spanish social system was in California. For instance, the system was anchored by the controlling authority of the missionaries (backed up by soldiers), but it was threatened by cultural misunderstandings, active and passive resistance from Indians, and the toll of epidemic disease, and the brutality of Spanish soldiers, to name a few.

Next, think about what we've looked at in class, and the assigned readings (like Dana and the textbook) to consider the social system that replaced the missions in Mexican California by the 1830s. For instance, in Mexican California, the missions were secularized (turned into parish churches) and their vast landholdings were distributed to several hundred recipients of vast land grants who exploited Indian labor. The Spanish government had prohibited Californians from trading with foreign merchants, but the Mexican government threw open California’s ports to merchant ships from around the world. What were the strengths and weaknesses of the new social system and economy created by these and other changes?

Once you’ve thought through those topics, write a short paper that addresses this question: Was Mexican California’s society more or less stable (in other words, more or less vulnerable to either internal or external threats to its persistence) than Spanish California’s society had been? Why or why not? I hope it’s obvious that there’s no objectively “correct” answer to this question; what I’m interested to see is the strength of your argument in support of one position or the other.

Your paper should be around 750-1000 words in length and should contain all the elements of an academic paper, including an introductory paragraph with a thesis statement that expresses your answer to the question (including the “why or why not” part); body paragraphs that present and analyze specific, cited evidence in support of your argument; smooth transitions that link one paragraph to the next; and a conclusion that reflects upon the significance of your argument. Support your argument with specific evidence from the readings: the textbook, de La Pérouse, Life in a California Mission; and Dana, Two Years Before the Mast (chapter XIII). Cite all quotes and specific information drawn from these sources with a simple parenthetical citation, as in (Rolle and Verge, 23) or (Pérouse, 68) or Dana (Chapter XIII) at the end of the relevant sentence. We'll consider lecture material to be common knowledge, so you need not cite it.

Purpose
primary source analysis (learning about the past through an active and critical reading of source produced in the period being studied) and perspective taking (understanding how perspective shapes the historical record).

In unit 3, we are building on those foundations by practicing another key component of historical thinking: historical empathy, or the ability to understand how historical context shaped the events and actors of the past.  For this discussion, you will compare and contrast two competing perspectives on the events that shaped the pre-Revolutionary colonies in order to understand how and why people (even the colonists themselves) disagreed on the proper relationship between Britain and her American colonies.

In the years between the end of the French and Indian War and the skirmishes at Lexington and Concord, 1763-1775, the colonies and the mother country debated the right of Parliament to legislate for the colonies. The British claimed that Parliament held this right without question, while the colonies insisted that only a body which they actually elected could tax them. While the British espoused the commonly-held notion that Parliament represented all British possessions virtually, the colonists drew on their experiences with their colonial legislatures, maintaining that the only true representation was actual representation. Read the accounts below, which are written from either a British or American point of view, and engage in a discussion that explores both sides of the debate.

For this discussion, we will divide the class roughly in half and explore division in colonial American society that led to divisions on the question of Revolution.

Using the Assigned Reading documents above, students whose names begin with M - Z will write their initial posting from the British or anti-Revolutionary perspective.  Both will write on the same question of  "What types of colonists would have been most likely to support the idea of Revolution? Why?

Your initial posting should be at least 2 paragraphs (6-7 sentences each) in length. You just use the primary sources in your analysis. Remember the contextualize the primary sources with what you know about the pre-Revolutionary period.

compare and contrast the USA constitution and Colorado constitution.

You will now compose an essay in which you will report on the key similarities and differences between your state constitution and the U.S. Constitution.  This comparison will focus on government structure and civil liberties protections. The rest of this lesson will help you complete your research and structure your essay accordingly. First, review the four components of the essay:

Discuss general similarities and differences between your state constitution and the U.S. Constitution (in terms of government and document structure).
Report on whether your state constitution includes a statement or bill of rights. Summarize the kinds of rights that are protected. How do they compare with the protections in the U.S. Bill of Rights?
Drill down to the specific right to privacy. Why is the right to privacy important? Is it explicitly mentioned in your state constitution? What are the exact words? Evaluate the scope of privacy protection offered—does it provide more, or less, protection than the U.S Constitution’s implied right to privacy?
Assess the merit of explicit versus general constitutional language in the protection of rights. Is one more preferable than another? How does the language in your state constitution compare to the language in the U.S. Constitution?  You have gathered all of the important information from your state constitution and the U.S. Constitution. Creating an outline can help ensure that all components of the essay prompt are met and can lead to more efficient writing.

Use the essay prompt and the information you gathered to create an outline. For example, the first component of the prompt reads: Discuss general similarities and differences between your state constitution and the U.S. Constitution (in terms of government and document structure).

A detailed outline for this component could be structured this way:

Discuss general similarities and differences between your state constitution and the U.S. Constitution
Document Structure
Similarities
preambles in both
articles in both
Differences:
state has more articles than U.S.
state is much longer than U.S.
Government Structure
Similarities
three branches
bicameral legislatures
Differences
legislatures have different names
jurisdiction of courts is different
Depending on your personal preference, you could write the outline and then write that component of the essay, or you could complete an outline for the entire prompt and then write all of the components at once.

Use the essay prompt and the rubric to guide your writing and ensure that you have met all of the requirements.

When Rome declined, the western half of the empire formed the Byzantine Empire. The eastern half became the Holy Roman Empire. Because the Byzantine Empire came from the fall of the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire had many similarities with Rome. In addition to these similarities, there were also several differences between these two empires. These similarities and differences helped shape the Byzantine Empire into what it became.

An important part of being an active researcher in archaeology is generating new knowledge and ideas about the archaeological past. This includes excavating new sites, examining artifacts and ecofacts, and reviewing data in new ways. In this assignment, you are the researcher digging for new clues amongst the data.

Begin by choosing an important site or type of site that was built and/or used in British early prehistory. You must email me no later than February 19 to clear your choice. Read as much as you can about your site/type site and critically evaluate the data and leading interpretations.

Next, write a paper (max. 2500 words) that discusses

      - your site’s significance, what it tells us about the past, and how its use/significance changed over time

      - the data that have been gathered and the leading interpretations

      - any controversies that surround these interpretations

      - your critical analysis of the interpretations (use the 'Thinking Critically' handout to help guide you)

Make sure you use concrete data and examples to support your ideas and cite all of your information in text and include a bibliography at the end of your paper. There are several handouts in the Student Writing Support folder to help guide you through this process of research, analysis, essay planning, and persuasive writing.

Your paper should be supported by a minimum of 10 reliable, scholarly resources, including at least 1 site/excavation report, that are correctly referenced using the Harvard method. In your research, avoid websites, blogs, newspaper articles and magazine articles because they are not detailed enough for this assignment. You must submit your paper online in the dropbox folder provided no later than March 29, 2020 at 11:59 pm. Late submissions will incur a penalty of 5% per day, inclusive of weekends.

Here are a few sites or types of sites you may wish to research, but you are not limited to these.

Durrington Walls, Wiltshire    henges
Cairnpapple, West Lothian, Scotland    stone circles
