Module 2 - SLP
PERSONALITY AND BEHAVIORAL PATTERNS
In accordance with the timeframe for your SLP work, the task at hand for the second module entails preparing an Introduction presenting an overview of the issue you have chosen to pursue for this course component (that is, the issue you chose to address from the four choices). This overview should be 2-3 paragraphs in length - identifying and further describing the issue to be addressed, along with subsequent sub-topics / details on the identified issue.

Your overview should be labeled, "Introduction", and should conclude with the specific RESEARCH QUESTION or questions pertaining to your selected issue.

Your topic for this paper should focus on one of these specific research questions:

What do we know about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)? What psychological symptoms are associated with it, and what effective treatments exist today (if any) to manage those symptoms?
How do traumatic experiences in childhood impact us later in life? Do they affect our ability to cope with subsequent traumatic experiences (either positively or negatively)? Do they somehow make us prone to experience more trauma later in life, and if so, how might that happen?
Given your understanding of three main psychological theories (Psychodynamic/Freud, Humanistic/Rogers, Cognitive-Behavioral/Beck), how might an adult who'd been traumatized as a child be treated differently by a psychodynamic, humanistic, and cognitive-behavioral therapist? Which therapy orientation do you think would be most effective for this person, and why?
Given your understanding of stress, the 'fight-or-flight' response and the neurological processes associated with it, what makes some events in life more difficult to cope with than others? Why are some people more capable of coping with stressful situations than others? Is the ability to cope with stress related to personality, intelligence, or some other variable?
NOTE: The four choices for research questions are listed above:  Your Introduction should end with one of these, either word-for-word or re-worded.  For example, my Introduction might start with a general statement about the role of negative experiences in our growth and development, define "trauma" as a particular type of negative event, and then define PTSD while presenting statistics about the prevalence of PTSD in society. I might then end my Introduction with, "This paper will address the questions, What do we know about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)? What psychological symptoms are associated with it, and what effective treatments exist today (if any) to manage those symptoms?'"

SLP Assignment Expectations
Your paper must go on to address any and all research questions posed in this introductory section. Be sure to support your statements with references and cite all resources.

This paper is expected to be in APA format, so it would be good to familiarize yourself with this format so you can begin to add those elements in when applicable.

Module 3 - Case
SPECIAL OCCASIONS AND DELIVERING THE SPEECH
Case Assignment
Prepare and deliver a speech to entertain that would be approximately two minutes (equates to two typed pages) in length. The goal of a speech to entertain is to have the audience relax, smile, and enjoy the occasion.

Your speech should have a main point, or “message” and hopefully include a mix of humor with a more serious morals or “lesson learned.” In other words, there should be a point to the speech instead of a series of one-liners strung together, one after another. You might include a lighthearted story that reveals a life lesson you have learned, examine a common topic from a different (or unexpected) point of view, or take a lighthearted look at a particular issue and have some fun with it. Always make an effort to select an audience-centered topic and try to personalize your content to engage your audience.

Topics may include:

Wedding toast (best man or maid/matron of honor speech)
Birthday speech
Farewell speech
Graduation speech
Funeral speech
Commemorative speech
The speech should follow the same outline template used in Module 2's SLP. I recommend you complete an outline for your entertaining speech before recording to make sure that you address each component in developing an effective speech. For example, the speech should include parts of a speech like an attention-getter, preview/purpose statement, credibility statement, etc., as indicated in the provided template.

This speech must be submitted in video format (Webcam or Smart Device). Please make sure to stabilize your camera before recording and filter any background noise. Your speech should be a minimum of 2 minutes in length. If your speech is more than 4 minutes long or 85 MB, you will need to compress your files before uploading. Please submit an e-ticket from the TLC homepage if you have problems uploading due to file size.

MyTLC Courses only supports the following media formats: SWF, MPG, MPEG, RM, MP3, MP4*, M4V*, M4A*, AVI, WAV, RAM, ASF, MOV, and RA.

You may use 4 x 6 note cards and deliver your remarks extemporaneously (not memorized or read word for word).

Please stand for your speech delivery and be aware that your dress is important to speech delivery. In some cases, your attire can act as a visual aid. Inappropriate and distracting clothing (e.g., text printed on shirt, graphics, and loud colors) and accessories (e.g., sparkly and noisy jewelry) can prevent your speech from being received well or interpreted correctly, and can hinder the establishment of the speaker/audience relationship.

Assignment Expectations
Create a two-minute entertaining speech based on the Module 3 SLP outline and record in video format (Webcam or Smart Device).

FRAMING:

This week's theme was Art and Activism.  Lectures and reading examined the ways in which Second Wave feminism influenced the production of art by feminist artists, particularly in the 1970s.  We took a closer look at the career of Ana Mendieta.  We also encountered readings that considered art activism along a racial axis.  This week's writing will challenge you to link the theoretical portions of the reading with specific examples of artwork.  Thus, it will rely on your having become familiar with this week's selections of art.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Pick one of the prompts below and write an essay (400-700 words) in response in formal academic English.  (So basically, your best grammar, punctuation and spelling; citations for quoted materials; paragraphing; and an internal structure to the essay—e.g., intro, body, conclusion.)  For citations, please use footnotes or endnotes.

If you are unfamiliar with footnote citation systems, please consult online resources that explain them. The Turabian system and the University of Chicago system are nearly identical.  The websites linked below organize the material in different ways; so, consult the one you find more readable:  https://www.library.georgetown.edu/tutorials/research-guides/turabian-footnote-guide (Links to an external site.) OR http://www.press.uchicago.edu/books/turabian/turabian_citationguide.html

PROMPTS [only two choices this week.  as always, pick the one that interests you!]

Please underline the thesis of your paper.  And cut and paste the prompt you select at the top of your essay!  Thank you.

1. You are the Curator!  You are the curator for your local art museum in your hometown.  The Museum Director has asked you to prepare an introductory statement of about 400-700 words for an upcoming exhibit on Feminist Art.  The Director has asked that your statement feel like a brief essay and should even include footnotes where appropriate.  In your first paragraph, please provide a summary statement that defines some of the main characteristics of art associated with the Feminist Art movement.  In your next two paragraphs, provide a brief biographical profile of two artists (one artist per paragraph). Do not simply cut and paste the information from the source. Use your own words.  By citing two pieces of art done by each artist, explain how the artist’s work fits the model of feminist art.  (Cite to the website when relevant to do so.)

2. Race is an important aspect of individual identity for individuals in the United States.  Artists, whose creative work also expresses an identity, sometimes can comment on aspects of their racial experience in their work. Consider the essay by Chang and the article by Platt. Write a brief introductory paragraph that summarizes the main ideas in each essay. Then write one paragraph about how identity can shift for just one person; one paragraph about alienation from one’s cultural roots, and one paragraph about making the familiar unfamiliar.    For each paragraph identify a piece of an art that you believe exemplifies this quote.  (The art may be mentioned in Platt’s article, Chang’s essay, or even be a piece of feminist art that also comments on race.)  Explain how the artist conveys the message about race or racial identity through the composition of the piece.  You may want to think about these quotations as the inspiration for each paragraph.
People of color in the U.S. can often find themselves associated with multiple groups, so that their “identities are often multiple, contextual, hybrid, shifting, transnational, or unstable.” Chang (xi).
Art with racial themes creates the possibility to “[view] the familiar, such as places, people and life experiences in unfamiliar wars, of seeing America with ‘new eyes.’” Chang xiii [emphasis in original]
Sometimes art work can “suggest the emotional distance that can occur when someone is far from their cultural roots.” Platt, “Under My Skin Artists Explore Race in the 21st Century,” artandpoliticsnow.com.  [Platt was referencing the photographs by Canh Nguyen, however apply this notion of alienation from root culture to any artwork you think it applies to.]
