Part 1:Assessing My Personal Health Risks

Many chronic medical conditions including cardiovascular disease and cancer are related, at least in part, to unhealthy behaviors and lifestyles. For instance, research shows that diet and smoking being the two leading behavioral risks for cancer. For this week’s discussion I’d like you to visit a Washington University School of Medicine website (see link below) that contains several “quizzes” that allow individuals to assess their risk for various conditions.

Explore this website by completing at least 1 assessment and post to the discussion board your reactions to the results of your “quiz”. In addition, please answer the following questions or comment on additional aspects of this self-assessment experience that you found to be interesting: What are your thoughts on the website’s recommendations about improving your lifestyle? What are your thoughts on the feedback it provided? Do you feel that this would be a helpful tool for patients in need of behavioral interventions for the prevention and or management of disease? Why or why not?

Part 2:Opinions about End of Life Decisions

Although the textbook does not discuss end-of-life decisions, several psychologists have examined the usefulness of advanced directives such as durable power of attorney and living wills. Peter Ditto and his colleagues have identified several challenges to the usefulness of advanced directives. Most Americans do not have an advanced directive that specifies what kind of end-of-life care they prefer, especially minorities, the poor, the young, and the healthy. Many people intend to draft an advance directive, but cite procrastination as a common excuse.

However, research shows that people’s preferences for various forms of end-of-life care are not particularly stable, and are even more unstable following a health threat. Thus, it is difficult for healthy people to accurately predict what kind of life-sustaining treatments they would prefer. Family members tend to overestimate a patient’s preference for life-sustaining care, so may not be the most accurate predictors of a person’s preferences for end-of-life care. Advanced directives can be helpful – especially when they can help strangers (such as hospital and emergency physicians) make more informed decisions about the preferences of patients.

Facing Death (2010; 53 minute video documentary) is part of the PBS Frontline series, highlighting some of the complicated end-of-life decisions faced by doctors, patients and their families at New York’s Mount Sinai Medical Center. After viewing the  4 minute video excerpt of this documentary (see link below) and reviewing the resources below, pose to the discussion board your personal opinion regarding the difficult question: How far would you go to sustain the life of someone you love, or your own?

You are welcome to cite additional resources or current publications (scholarly or media-related) to support your opinion. You may also watch the full documentary available at: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/facing-death/ (Links to an external site.)

Please be mindful of the sensitive nature of this topic and be respectful of your classmates when posting your own original responses as well as your replies to their opinions.

Paper Instructions:

For this project, you will first identify a content standard for an instructional unit which you will be teaching during the time our course is in session. The content standard will be associated with knowledge and understanding, reasoning, performance skills, or product development for the unit of study. Additionally, at least one related non-cognitive skill will be chosen to be assessed.

The second step is to select learning targets and then determine appropriate and equitable methods for assessing those targets on a formative and/or summative basis for a total of three assessments. The three assessments should not all use the same assessment tool, but they may address the same learning target. At least three different types of assessment tools should be included (e.g., selected response, constructed response, essay, performance assessment, product assessment, etc.), at least one of those should include a rubric and at least one of them should include a table of test specs. At least one of the assessments must provide item analysis feedback for the teacher to be able to discern student misconceptions, and the misconceptions must be specified. This is a point where you may turn to research around questions such as the ideal number of choices in selected-response items or designing for equity in assessment. There is no requirement that assessments you develop are a certain length, rather what is important is that they generate results used for feedback to your students and yourself.

The third step is to pilot the assessments with a small group of students about whom you wish to know more about learning and planning for instruction, or a whole class. In some cases, it may be just one student who takes the assessments. Piloting the assessments will help you learn about the usefulness of the assessments and give you the information you could use to determine what (if any) changes you would make to create more effective assessments. Be sure to analyze the results you collect and discuss the implications of your results in your final project write-up. This is the second point where you may incorporate research into your project. Remember that you can call on the research librarians at St. Thomas in addition to me for assistance with research questions you might have.

Step four is the submission, in two formats: a five (5) minute Power Point presentation and a written paper or final submitted narrated Power Point, or other format agreed upon by student and professor by week 6 of the course. The five minute Power Point presentation is to the class and should summarize and analyze the process you went through to design and administer the assessments and analyze the results, conclusions you drew from the results, as well as key points from your reflection on what you learned in general, how to construct assessments which equitably assess student learning, assessing non-cognitive skills, and how you will integrate that into your teaching. Perhaps you came up with interesting questions about assessment that you found answers to in the literature during this project, or upon completion, you have yet more questions. This is the appropriate place to tell about your findings.

Fall’2019
Reflection Writing Prompt

Reflection: The throwing back by a body or surface of light, heat, or sound without absorbing it: ... 'It is based on the analysis of light reflection at a fluid meniscus whose radius of curvature is related to its surface tension.' (Oxford Dictionary).

Self-Reflection: Meditation (Oxford Dictionary).

In the reflection essays, I am inviting you to first read the materials for the class thoroughly. You will then “reflect” back upon the materials by connecting the core concepts from the readings to a news item, scientific website, or blog items related to the topic of the day. Below please find a suggested structure to follow:

Briefly introduce the topic (Landforms, or climate change, or geographies of sexualities). Consider this portion your opportunity to define, explain, and describe the topic and how it is related to your blog item or news piece.

Briefly describe the key findings or the arguments of the news piece.

Make connections between the topics of the day (find at least two relevant concepts, physical processes, or definitions) and the news-item. In this portion you are making connections, applying the concepts form the reading to assess, give your own opinion on the news item. Such as: According to the National Geographic the water moisture level in Hawaii has been changing since the 1950’s. The water and atmospheric moisture level (a concept from the slides) is related to rising temperature. I therefore conclude…

Please write brief sentences. The best reflection essays do not use long winding sentences. Be concise: state your argument clearly. Choose 2-3 concepts from the reading, make sure you are making clear connections between them and the news item. The reflection is two pages, 12inch font, double spaced. Please cite the link of the blog/news-piece or website clearly. Please submit the essays on the date that it is due via Husky CT. The window will remain open from 12:30 am till 11pm☺
