A certain matter-of-fact quality pervades the desсrіptions of the wounds inflicted and received by soldiers; the face-to-face attacks with rifle butts, spades, and grenades; the sounds, smells, and colors of death and dying in this book. Why do the soldiers regard war in such an indifferent manner? Point out dialogue and events that lead you to believe that Paul and his fellows are not as nonchalant as they sometimes sound. 5. Paul says in Chapter Six, ″I wonder whether, when I am twenty, I shall have experienced the bewildering emotions of love.″ Trace the comments and episodes throughout the book that seem to indicate that Paul does indeed experience love, in one form or another. 6. While on the front Paul daydreams about his lovely, tranquil home; when he finally makes it home on leave, he fights back visions of his comrades in the war. Why does he regret having made the trip home? In what ways does his experience there support Albert Kropp′s assertion that ″The war has ruined us for everything″? 7. As Paul stands guard over the Russian prisoners, he ponders how commands from higher-ups have transformed men so like his own countrymen into enemies and could just as swiftly turn them into friends. But his thoughts frighten him. What is ″the abyss″ to which he fears such thoughts will lead? 8. Why does Paul feel a ″strange attachment″ to the soldiers in his outfit once he returns from leave? 9. While on an especially risky patrol, Paul promises himself that, should some soldier hop into his shell-hole, Paul will be the first to strike. Once he carries out this strategy, why does he try to save the French soldier he has mortally wounded? Why does he later make promises to the dead man that he soon realizes, or decides, that he will not keep? 10. All Quiet on the Western Front abounds with reports of inadequate medical supplies and care, slipshod or shady procedures, and outright malpractice (refer to Chapters One and Ten). How could the government and army allow this problem to go unrectified? How could the soldiers tolerate it? Why didn′t more of them report, if not revolt against, the treatment they received? 11. Why do you think the author timed Paul′s death in October 1918, just before the long-rumored armistice? (Germany signed The Treaty of Versailles on November 11, 1918.) 12. When All Quiet on the Western Front debuted in the United States it drew tremendous reviews from critics. Even so, one critic tempered admiration of the book′s realism with this comment: ″It is not a great book; it has not the depth, the spiritual insight, the magnitude of interests which make up a great book″ (The New York Times Book Review, June 2, 1929). Do you agree or disagree with this assessment? What ingredients are essential to the making of a great book?

I was listening to the TedTalk on Bringing the Context Back into Learning. It is correct when we were younger; there was that one person in class who would ask the question why. Remembering that one person who would ask why was me. One day I was in math class, and it was at the point where I was becoming agitated on learning math such as algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and other forms of math. Raising my hand in the middle of class, I asked what the point of learning these forms of math is? I will NEVER use this in college and or my career. At that point, my teacher states, how do you know? You have no idea what you want to be when you get older. I feel I was one of the few examples in this world who actually knew at a young age what I wanted to do with my life. I told her I would never need math in my life except for knowing how to add, subtract, divide, and multiply, and that is all I need to know. Well, my teacher did not like that answer because most people do not know what they want out of life, let alone what they want to go to college for. I knew what I wanted out of life; I knew I would never take any courses in college on math, no matter the type of math, even if it is basic math. After this episode in school, my teacher did not appreciate being put on the spot. The next day she printed out this paper and gave it to me in front of the class. I have no idea what it was about; all I remember is the heading, which said, Why Do you Need to Learn Math Now For the Future. At that point I had to laugh because deep down she went out of her way to prove me wrong, and I knew it was pointless. This TedTalk is about the incident I went through when I was in high school. According to Devries (2012), fun is just another form of learning. It would help if you learned what learning is and why it is essential and fun. If this is not presented to you in a way for you to digest the information. It is going to be hard to learn and accept what is being taught. He makes a good point when saying, according to Devries (2012), not knowing why you are learning information is not motivating at all. Knowing why your learning the information and then applying what we are learning, in reality, is more captivating. Putting games together to focus on the job you are performing is a good tactic you need to use in order to help individuals want to do their job. According to Devries (2012), exploring the path of wanting to know if games pertaining to school would be beneficial for children. Using learnt through play has proven to be a successful learning experience. When educational computer games are adopted in supporting learning in the classroom, the pedagogical aspects such as learning style should be taken into account. According to Devries (2012), as different people learn and process information differently, it is important to understand individual learning style which allows the prediction of the way learners react and feel in different situations.

The human science tradition is often overlooked or ignored when the word “science” comes up in history or discussion, but has an extensive history of its own, depending on where you start it, at least as early as the late 1800s/early 1900s with Wilhelm Dilthey’s distinction between the natural sciences (Naturalwissenschaften) and the human sciences (Geistewissenschaften). Even today, the human sciences are called “soft” sciences, privileging the more “hard” natural sciences. This “politic” of soft and hard, weak and strong thought, has very significant impact on how we care for others and to what we attend. How could the human scientist argue for an equal place setting at the communion table with the natural scientists today, and where would you address the history of these collision of values and how they became lopsided?
Student's Response
There is an ongoing debate between the human and natural sciences with some leaning toward the belief that the human sciences are far less superior. Proponents of natural sciences believe that the methodology of human sciences is focused on understanding rather that explaining and that human sciences should consider the natural sciences a role model to be integrated into its methodology (Ingthorsson, Rögnvaldur 2013). Human sciences have been fighting from day one to be taken seriously as a legitimate discipline. Historically, Human sciences have been the unwanted stepchild and have attempted to gain favor by imitating the “successful” methodology, logic and techniques of the natural sciences, or at best, the archetype (Montuschi ,2008). The bias makes sense if you consider that science started as a natural science and scientists claimed success by producing findings based on natural facts. This caused the natural sciences to become the gold standard of science. Because human sciences came later (19th century) they have been trying to gain respect since (Dunn, 2013). Ingthorsson, Rögnvaldur (2013) believe that human sciences should not try to strive to model natural sciences because human sciences study meaningful experiences that have a different nature than that of the physical experiences studied by natural sciences. As a result, human sciences do not always follow natural laws as natural sciences do. This does not mean human sciences do not consider objective reality in its practice that does not lead to genuine knowledge of the subject. Researchers in the hard sciences (natural)believe that the soft sciences (human) do not meet the rigor for meeting clearly defined terminology, quantifiability, controlled experimental conditions, reproductivity, predictability and testability. This is obviously not the case because soft sciences can be just as rigorous and help us learn about some important ways the world works. Since they often involve people however, there cannot always be random, controlled environment (Henriques,2016). Social sciences are a real science because they apply scientific research methods and conduct valid research that has led to insight into cognition, behavior, consciousness and the human condition. It also provides insight into how the world works in ways that natural sciences do not. (Henriques, 2016). I absolutely believe that human sciences get a seat at the table. Actually, I think they should be at the head (just kidding, I am being petty). The same people who think that human sciences are not valid probably have or are currently benefitting from them in some form. When we consider psychotherapy for mental health issues and the therapeutic interventions that help, that is due to research in the social sciences, while natural sciences help discover the medication. If we think about social problems relevant to society today such as the issues with police violence and the impacts on African Americans, it is human sciences that conduct the studies leading to the implications . Human sciences have contributed to the body of knowledge in the world that help us learn about the human condition in a way that natural sciences cannot. Natural sciences contribute to the human condition in a way that social sciences cannot. They are interdependent. In my opinion, one cannot exist without the other.

Whether you have wanted to be a teacher your entire life or you have just recently discovered your passion for teaching young children, you are here for a reason. Why did you choose to teach young children? Many early childhood professionals see their work as a vocation, a personal mission, or a calling.
Develop a professional mission paper articulating your role in the lives of young children. In 3-4 APA-style pages, address the following:
Why do you work (or want to work) with young children? What characteristics should an early childhood professional embody? Explain. How do you strive to be an early childhood professional? What is your goal or mission as you work with young children? How do/will you advocate for children in this role? How does your goal or mission align with your spiritual faith or life values? Save this as a “living” document. Revisit it from time to time as a reaffirmation of your mission as an early childhood professional.
Support your statements with evidence from the required studies and your research. Cite and reference your sources in APA style.

I selected to do my functional paper on portfolio optimization. Below is my previous discussion post. You can expound upon
Portfolio Optimization attempts to answer the question:“ How should an investor allocate funds among the possible investment choices?” Economist Harry Markowitz first developed the theory of portfolio optimization in 1952. Markowitz's theory emphasized the importance of portfolios, risk, the correlations between securities, and diversification. First, Markowitz quantified return and risk of a security, using the statistical measures of its expected return and standard deviation. Then, Markowitz suggested that investors should consider return and risk together and determine the allocation of funds among investment alternatives on the basis of their return-risk trade-off. Markowitz’s theory, that sound financial decision-making is a quantitative trade-off between return and risk was revolutionary. First, it posited that one could make a quantitative evaluation of portfolio return and risk jointly by considering security returns and their co-movements (Kolm, Tütüncü, & Fabozzi, 2014). It is based on the idea that a portfolio’s riskiness depends on the correlations of its constituents, not only on the average riskiness of its separate holdings (Kolm, Tütüncü, & Fabozzi, 2014). Second, it formulated the financial decision-making process as an optimization problem. In particular, the so-called mean–variance optimization (MVO) problem formulated by Markowitz suggests that among the infinite number of portfolios that achieve a particular return objective, the investor should choose the portfolio that has the smallest variance (Kolm, Tütüncü, & Fabozzi, 2014).
Although Markowitz’s modern portfolio theory revolutionized portfolio construction it took many years for portfolio managers to start applying it to manage real money. In real world applications there are many concerns associated with its use, and portfolio optimization is still considered by many practitioners to be impractical to apply. The portfolio optimization model has limited impact in practice because of estimation issues when applied to real data. Numerous studies have been conducted subsequently to address these limitations. Transaction costs make the portfolio optimization problem difficult to solve when the number of assets is greater than two, especially in a dynamic setting. Brown and Smith (2011) calculated portfolio optimization with transact cost using several easy-to-compute heuristic trading strategies that are based on optimizing simpler models. Using a dual approach for examining the quality of these Brown and Smith (2011), found that performance of the heuristic strategy is very close to the upper bound, indicating that the heuristic strategies are very nearly optimal (Brown & Smith, 2011). Over estimation is also a problem with portfolio optimization. Although, Bai et al. (2009), proposed a bootstrap-corrected estimator to correct the overestimation, there is no closed form for their estimator. Ban, Kaouri, & Lim (2016), conducted a study to circumvent this limitation using explicit formulas for the estimate of the optimal portfolio. In the study they were able to prove their proposed closed-form return estimator is consistent and outperforms traditional estimators and the bootstrap-corrected estimators (Ban, Kaouri, & Lim, 2016). They were able to obtain an explicit formula for the variance of the improved return estimate.
In summary Markowitz’s modern portfolio theory was groundbreaking for its day. It is a seminal piece of work in finance but does have limitations in practical application. These limitations can be overcome to get optimal results.
