Questions And Topics We Can Help You To Answer

TELEVISION: Explore three (3) of the websites listed below related to television. Obviously, most of these sites are linked to actual television programs or networks, so if you watch television, your summary should discuss the similarities and differences between the online site and the television site. If you are not a television watcher, your study may deal strictly with the websites but you should point out what differences you see in the experience of actually watching TV and the experience of the looking at the websites. The point of the assignment is that as the Internet has grown, television has been forced to have an Internet presence, just as other media, such as newspapers and magazines, have had to have Internet sites. It's all a perfect example of narrowcasting or targeting of audiences.

Here are the sites to look at. Be sure you look at three of them before you submit your 200-300 word assignment.

The first three are cable related and the third and fourth are network shows that are among the highest rated around these days.

ESPN: http://espn.go.com--Remember, this was a sports cable network first. Now look at how it's evolved.
The Weather Channel: www.weather.com--This was the cable station critics said would never make it. Who would support 24/7 weather?
Discovery Channel: http://www.discovery.com--Popular health, science, animal and other educational shows are found here.
Grey's Anatomy: http://abc.go.com/primetime/greysanatomy--Even if you do not watch the television show, notice the links that give you access to all kinds of information. In particular, check out the one about medical information--find it by clicking on "Grey's Anatomy Extras"  and going to "Medical Case Files."
The Big Bang Theory: http://www.cbs.com/shows/big_bang_theory/--If you are not familiar with this show, the website might not appeal to you; the programming probably has more of a "cult following" than the others listed above. Notice particularly how this site is connected to Facebook and Twitter. How do you think social media comments affect the popularity of this show? What other aspects of this website might make it more appealing to a younger audience than the sites above?

Assignment 2

Description Essay (Chapter 8, pp. 120-136, Arlov)

Purpose of Assignment

• The purpose of this assignment is to help the students to acquire an extended set of vocabularies and a higher level of writing ability.

Objectives

• The student will be able to identify the basic structure of an essay and learn how to use it.
• The student will understand the diversity of words that can be used.
• The student will understand the creativity of the writing process.
• The student will be able to craft a compelling essay.

Instructions

The descriptive essay simply describes something or someone by appealing to the reader’s senses: sight, sound, touch, smell and taste.
It is the task of the student to write an essay that makes the selected object, picture or person come alive on his essay paper.

1. Select a subject
Observation is the key to writing a good description. For example, if you are writing about a place, go there and take notes on the sights, sounds, and smells. A descriptive essay paints a picture for the reader, using descriptive devices and the senses. Create a thesis statement that informs the reader who or what you are describing. Examples: “The wooden roller coaster in Coney Island is a work of art.” “My bedroom is an ocean sanctuary.”

2. Select dominant details
Select only the details that support the dominant impression (your thesis statement).

3. Organize details
The paragraphs in a descriptive essay can be structured spatially (from top to bottom or from near to far) or chronologically (time order) or from general to specific. Descriptive essays can also use other patterns of organization such as narrative or exemplification.

4. Use descriptive words
Do not use vague words or generalities (such as good, nice, bad, or beautiful). Be specific and use sensory, descriptive words (adjectives). For example:
“I ate a good dinner” but much better is “I devoured a steaming hot, cheese-filled beef pizza for dinner.”
Provide sensory details:
Smells that are in the air like the aroma of freshly brewed coffee)
Sounds: (traffic, honking horns)
Sights: “The sun scattered tiny diamonds across dew-covered grass as it peeked out from beyond the horizon”.
Touch: “The texture of the adobe hut’s walls resembled coarse sandpaper.”)
Taste: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, tart (“Giant goose bumps formed on my tongue when I accidently bit into a sliver of lemon.”)

5. Draw a logical conclusion
The conclusion may also use descriptive words; however, make certain the conclusion is logical and relevant.

Requirements

The essay must:
• Have a complete cover page
• have at least 400 words
• use full sentences (and no bullet points)

Questions and Topics We Can Help You To Answer

Final Application Assignment:

- You will prepare a persuasive poster or handout on one of the assigned topics (below). The final project should demonstrate your ability to strategically apply the concepts and theories of this course to produce a persuasive message. Persuasive theory, research on the specific topic, and research on your audience should all be incorporated to create the persuasive artifact. Along with the poster or handout, you will prepare a short (1-2 page) essay explaining your choices in creating the message.
The persuasive artifact should:

-· Be a persuasive poster or 1-page handout
· Demonstrate understanding and application of persuasive theory
· Demonstrate understanding of the topic
· Demonstrate understanding of your audience
· Be professional in style, language, and appearance

The essay should include:
· An explanation of specific ways in which persuasion theory or concepts influenced the project
· An explanation of specific ways in which research about the topic and/or the audience
influenced the project
Conform to university-level writing standards

Choose from one of the following TWO topics for your project:
1. Studying abroad while in college 2. Eating a healthy diet

Part 1 of the Assignment: Persuasive Artifact: 150 points

The first part of the final project is the creation of a poster or 1-page flyer/handout. The poster/flyer should be turned in as a .pdf file. The persuasive artifact should be presented as a professional-level product that could be used in a healthy eating campaign or to promote studying abroad. It should be addressed to the Purdue undergraduate audience (in other words, you are trying to persuade your classmates, not your instructor.)
Each aspect of the artifact should be a thoughtful decision. Use the theories and concepts from class to determine what beliefs or attitudes to address (e.g., What does the reasoned action model say is important? The EPPM?). Consider how your audience will respond to messages (e.g., Does the message lie in their latitude of acceptance? Will they process centrally or peripherally?). How can you visually present the message to increase central processing? What language choice will increase liking or credibility?

Part 2 of the Assignment: The Essay: 50 points
Each of the decisions you make in designing the artifact (What information did you provide? What pictures did you use?) should be explained in the essay. You should make a case that your message will be effective based on persuasion theory. You should also demonstrate an understanding of the topic and your audience by conducting and citing outside research.
It is not necessary to use or refer to every theory we have covered in the course. It is quite likely that one or two theories will be sufficient for planning your artifact. It is expected that the essay will contain references to textbook or video material, to outside research about your topic, AND to outside research regarding your audience (Purdue students, in this case.)
( I'll provide theories from textbook or video material for you to include in the writing )

Essay 2: Writing to Inform

Using any or all of the 3 article databases in the APUS Online Library (Proquest, EBSCO, and/or the LexisNexis) research the topic you have chosen in Week 3, and write an essay in which you inform the reader about the topic. Do not, however, write the essay in the first person. Instead, write in the third person—i.e., “Astronomy is an innately interesting field of study,” not “I am extremely interested in astronomy.”

We generally use third person exclusively in academic or scholarly writing, unless we are specifically directed to use first person. In Essay #2, you will need to be aware of what person you are in, and take out first and second person. Here is an example:

I love my country because it represents liberty and justice. This is first person. You do not want to write this in academic writing unless you are directed to write in first person.

You love your country because it represents liberty and justice. This is second person. You do not want to write this in academic writing unless you are allowed to use second person.

Americans love their country because it represents liberty and justice. This is third person. This is the preferred voice for academic writing.

Third person lends authority to your writing. Look at the difference between these two sentences:

I believe Hemingway brought a powerful masculine voice to American literature.
Hemingway brought a powerful masculine voice to American literature.

The second sentence sounds more authoritative, doesn’t it?

For Essay 2, you will need to integrate a minimum of 2 sources from any or all of the three article databases. Remember that an informative essay does not include the writer's feelings or opinions, but simply informs the reader about the topic. All essays should be in MLA format. Your essay should be between 500-750 words.

See Week 3 Assignment Materials for a sample essay that may be used as a template.

In your essay feedback it may be recommended that you use the tutoring services available through the library portal. Students who have utilized this resource have significantly improved their writing and raised their grades. You can find more about tutoring from the APUS Online Library homepage.

All essays will be automatically submitted to Turnitin.com when you submit your essay.
