Instructions
For this Primary Source Analysis assignment, you will analyze Speech: Abraham Lincoln and the War With Mexico in the previous Module slide, and complete a Primary Source Analysis.

Guidelines
The purpose of this assignment is to build your analytical skills. These questions are designed to help you better understand the document and its historical significance. Your job here is to fully answer these questions: simple one-word answers will not suffice. In order to get full credit on this assignment you must fully explain your answers and give examples from the source. The point is for you to come out of this with a very good understanding of these documents. Fully answering these questions will help you do so.

Since you will quote from the source assigned in order to illustrate your analysis, it is required that you include citations and give credit for use of the source.

Expected minimum length of the Primary Source Analysis assignment is 500 words. This length does not include the Chicago-style footnote citation or any heading and title details. The following questions direct you in completing an analysis of the source assigned, and you should compile your analysis in essay form with your answers as part of paragraphs.

Identification: Who wrote or created the document and what makes that person significant to the time period of the document/source?
Audience: Who is the intended audience and why is that group significant to the time period of the document/source?
Main idea: Give a short summary of the document.
Analysis: What is the purpose of this document? What details lead you to this conclusion? What questions does this source raise?
Evidence: Give specific examples from the document that support your answer for question 4 (make sure to use footnotes as your citations for the source).
Keep focused on developing ideas about the significance of the document based on these questions, and include your position (as an argument, thesis, or description of that significance), in the section of your submitted assignment that answers question 4.

In your paper, you should discuss the types of systems, capabilities, structures, limitations, payloads, support equipment, and users. It is not enough to merely list what is the same and what is different. Why is it important to see what is the same and what is different? Compare and contrast essays to promote critical thinking. Ensure you apply critical thinking; do not just list or discuss two separate UAS. The following requirements must be followed in your research paper.
Compare and contrast both UAS together, throughout the whole paper.

Go into more depth within your chosen social problem. Examine your selected social problem and theorize why your social problem exists in the first place. Which sociological theory do you identify most with as you describe your social problem (see page 15 of your text/figure 1.7 & table 1.2). Why? (100-150 words)
I'd like for us to use our sociological imagination. C. Wright Mills (a famous sociologist) described the sociological imagination as: "the vivid awareness of the relationship between personal experience and the wider society". Choose one social problem (such as: abortion, bullying, alcoholism, date rape, capital punishment/death penalty, racism, poverty, eating disorders, etc.) and describe, in your ideal society, how you would combat your selected issue to solve it. Describe the experience of those affected by the social problem and how their experience would be shifted through the changes made in your ideal society. (200 words) (15 points)

A portion of this course asks you to write a paper that gives a small taste of what historians actually do. The field of history is not solely about memorizing names and dates, rather it is an ongoing conversation. It is a dynamic field in which you can be an active participant. The major components of the field of history focus on constructing an argument, researching supporting evidence, and presenting that evidence in a concise manner. An historian will make an argument about a topic and support her/his argument utilizing primary source or secondary source documents (i.e. evidence). You will be required to write a 4-5-page (1200-1500 words) paper on an individual slave’s experience. This assignment will expose you to several aspects in the discipline of history such as primary sources, citations, etc . . .
The Paper  must be submitted using the link on MyCourses. An extension will not be given except for the most extreme circumstance, and must be arranged well in advance of the due date with your instructor’s permission. This means that the due date is firm for the entire class; late submissions will result in an automatic zero.
The institution of African American slavery defined early American history, and the ramifications of the institution permeate in many ways into modern discourse. Understanding the life of a slave, from the perspective of a slave, is an extremely valuable exercise for better understanding the institution. Every element of the slave’s life was owned and controlled by the slave owner. Historian Walter Johnson argued that the American institution of slavery was built “out of sun, water, and soil; animal energy, human labor, and mother wit; grain, flesh, and cotton; pain, hunger and fatigue; blood, milk, semen, and shit.” In order for you to better understand the life of a slave, you are required to write a 4-5-page (1200-1500 words) narrative paper utilizing the North American Slave Narratives database: http://docsouth.unc.edu/neh/texts.html. The North American Slave Narratives database is produced by the University of North Carolina, and it is a collection of African American slave narratives from individuals who lived in the 18th and 19th century. You should find an individual’s story that interests you, and develop a paper about their experience. You should be able to construct a biography answering questions about the individual. Why and how did they write the narrative? Where did they grow up? What was their occupation? What was their educational background, if any? How did they write about their experience as a slave? How did they portray their owners? Furthermore, you should grapple with some larger issues in the field of history, such as the reliability of the sources, who wrote the narrative, is their any type of bias present in the narrative, can the source be trusted, etc.? You do not need to engage with each one of these questions, but I expect you to fully analyze the life of the individual you chose and to situate their story into the larger lessons of the course. This paper should reflect your understanding and knowledge of this topic from the course thus far, and you should be able to speak about specific historic instances that support the narrative you chose.
