Guidelines for preparing PROPOSAL FOR FIELDWORK
What is a field?
The setting or place or group in which or among which you will conduct your project of anthropological inquiry
What is fieldwork?
All the activities you will carry out in the process of learning about the topic/group/practice you wish to understand better
“working in the field means talking to people, listening, observing, recording, taking notes, participating in the activities, reflecting, writing, searching for connections to other ideas, reviewing literature (all of the above, etc.)
Research versus Cultural Documentation
“Research” and “Documentation” share a few things in common: both are methods of investigation; employ systematic process; collect information; require care and diligence
“Research” and “Documentation” differ in some important ways: research leans heavily in the direction of discovery of facts and testing of theories; documentation is primarily about conveying information, establishing a record of verifiable evidence.
In the assignment for this class you are being asked to engage in a project of cultural documentation (or ethnographic inquiry) not in a “research” investigation per se.
Requirements for the chosen field project:
Must be a current, living community (not in the past; not through books or films only)
Must offer easy accessibility for you to be able to “participate” and “observe” (i.e. avoid any settings that require extensive permitting process to enter or conduct investigation)
Must be something that interests you. When something intrigues you, it is probably worth investigating. Common areas of research: ethnic groups, occupations, religious communities, styles or trends, social habits, food, hobbies, artistic expressions, traditions, objects and material culture.
Avoid any topics that have the potential to pose complex ethical dilemmas (of confidentiality, undue psychological stress to people asked to be interviewed/observed, put you in dangerous settings, have the potential to harm anyone’s or any community’s reputation or wellbeing).
For the purpose of the PROPOSAL, you can go ahead and propose what you are thinking NOW --if you are not 100% sure about any of the 4 points above, go ahead and write your proposal as best as you can with what you know. Dr. Alvarez and Sarah WILL GIVE YOU FEEDBACK and help you address anything that needs re-thinking.
Information to include in your proposal:
What are you interested in learning more about (in subjecting to a more systematic analysis than just casual knowledge)?
What is your connection to this topic; your positionality (insider or outsider)?
What are 2 or 3 interesting things YOU THINK you will find when you look further into this practice?
Where’s the “culture” in this thing you hope to document? What are 2 or 3 habits, rituals, words, behaviors, beliefs YOU THINK (from what you know now) that may come up as important in your documentation?
Do you have access to this group? Person? Practice? How? Who would be your main narrators (i.e. “informants”)?
What techniques of ethnography are you planning on using? Interviews…(up to 5)….participate in the activity….observation…..video/photography…..

BRAIN ASSIGNMENT
Your task is identify a topic RELATED TO THE BRAIN and to investigate what research shows about this topic. Below are some example topics you could investigate. Feel free to pick any of these topics, or come up with your own topic, as long as it somehow relates to both psychology and the brain:
The brains of Deaf sign language users differ from spoken language users.
Blindsight: "seeing" without conscious vision.
Are there differences in the brain based on biological sex?
Learning new skills changes the structure of the brain.
How does the brain recognize faces?
What happens in the brain when we sleep?
Once you have identified a topic, do the following:
1. Write a summary of your topic (approximately one page is fine; it can also be longer). Find at least TWO OUTSIDE SOURCES (other than our textbook). You can use academic peer-reviewed journal articles, books, newspaper articles, films, academic websites (WIKIPEDIA DOES NOT COUNT FOR THIS ASSIGNMENT). The most credible websites are based on research findings and often end in .edu or .org. The best method for you for finding peer-reviewed journal articles is to use the library search tools such as Academic Search Complete. If you search for a particular key term (e.g. marijuana), you will usually get a list of journal article abstracts, often with direct links to the actual articles. Peer-reviewed articles typically contain subsections such as an abstract, introduction, methods, results and discussion. Sometimes they are "review articles" that review many studies (rather than report the results of an original experiment) and may not include all of these subsections, but you can still recognize them in the library search since they are labeled as an "Academic journal" (rather than "Periodical" which are not peer-reviewed).
2. Post the summary on Canvas as a discussion post in the REPLY box below (by Sat Feb 4th midnight). List your sources in APA style at the end of your summary. (10 points)
3. Read other students' summaries, and reply to one of them (by Mon Feb 6th midnight). You can ask questions, comment on their information, tell about your knowledge related to their topic, etc. (5 points)
IMPORTANT:
Your summary must be IN YOUR OWN WORDS. Every time you use the words and/or ideas of an outside source, you must appropriately cite that source in APA style IN THE TEXT. YOU MUST ALWAYS INDICATE IN THE TEXT WHERE YOU GOT THE INFORMATION EVEN IF YOU WRITE IT IN YOUR OWN WORDS. (PLEASE DO NOT INCLUDE DIRECT QUOTATIONS IN YOUR SUMMARY EXCEPT IN UNUSUAL CIRCUMSTANCES; IT'S ALWAYS BETTER TO WRITE IN YOUR OWN WORDS). Please provide a list of the references at the end of the assignment in APA style (see the APA style guide link posted on the website. Choose the correct way to list the reference based on the source you are using, e.g. journal article).
When you cite a source in the text of your summary, use the name of the author(s) and publication year in parentheses. Here's how:
Cocaine is a strong central nervous system stimulant (Smith, 2010). Alcohol, on the other hand, is a strong depressant (Zhang & Jones, 2001).
Or:
According to Smith (2010), cocaine is a strong central nervous system stimulant. In contrast, Zhang & Jones (2001) discuss the effects of a strong depressant, alcohol, on the central nervous system.
If there is no author (which may sometimes happen with websites), use the the first few words of the reference list entry (usually the title). Use double quotation marks. See these examples:
For citations with no author (USING APA is the title of a website):
A similar study was done of students learning to format research papers ("Using APA," 2001).
No author & no date (TUTORING AND APA is the title of a website, and there is no date given):
In another study of students and research decisions, it was discovered that students succeeded with tutoring ("Tutoring and APA," n.d.).
