Great speakers are not merely ones who present a good speech or who arrange a speech well. Rather, such speakers are great because they make compelling and persuasive arguments. To effectively build a sound argument, a speech must contain logos, ethos, and pathos (See Chapter 3 from the course textbook for more on these concepts). As students, scholars, and citizens, we can learn from such great moments in oratory history by studying these three concepts and how they are used to make an argument.

For this discussion, choose a speech from the following list of “great speeches” of the 20th century, except the first one (Martin Luther King’s “I Have a Dream” speech): Top 100 Speeches (Links to an external site.).

Read (and perhaps listen to or watch) your chosen speech and identify one instance of logos, ethos, and pathos each being used in the speech. Analyze how the inclusion of each enhances the persuasiveness of the speech.

Your initial post should be at least 250 words in length. Support your claims with examples from the required material(s) and/or other scholarly resources, and properly cite any references according to APA formatting as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center.

Some studies say that up to 93% of our communication is nonverbal. For this course's Informative Speech, I would like you to give a short speech (2-4 minutes) discussing an article relating to nonverbal communication. Pick an area of nonverbal communication and share some research. There is a lot of research out there on random topics, so you can find some really interesting stuff!

I recommend picking a sense (e.g., smell, touch, hearing, taste, etc.) or a section of the chapter (e.g., territory, proxemics, lying), and then picking an area of interest (e.g., connection, love, dogs, children, illness, etc.), and then seeing what you come up with. There is so much random stuff out there! For example, you can find a lot of interesting articles if you type in "old people" with "smell," "love" with "touch," or "hearing" with "illness." Be creative with your key words and ideas!

The text and articles discusses issues involved in the use of race as a factor in hiring and selection. Specifically, race norming has been prohibited (1991). Please feel free to discuss any formal, moral and philosophical, new historical, mythic, Marxist, psychoanalytic, feminist, or other analytical lens to examine the play. You are required to use evidence in this essay (at least four sources) to support your claims or to argue against another critic’s view of the play.
1. Think of an insightful, open-ended question about the play you are critiquing.  Remember your essay question can deal with any aspect of the play—character, language, symbol, tension, gender, style, etc. 
2. Focus on this question as you read and review the play. Mark the dialogue and scenes that make reference to your question. After doing so, write a short answer to your question. Allow this answer to become your thesis statement.
3. Prepare your evidence and thinking to support your thesis. Writing an outline can help you present your information in an interesting, persuasive, and clear format.
4. In your essay be wary of retelling the plot of the play. Assume your readers know the plot. Also, avoid the temptation to simply repeat class discussions. When you use a direct quote from the play, cite the reference by act, scene, and line number: (4.2.43-46). Your thoughts and ideas should be your own, yet if you do include an outside source or two, please give credit to the author and use an appropriate MLA citation. Please avoid plagiarism at all costs.
5. Offer us an introduction that grabs our attention and reveals your thesis. Incorporate specific examples into the body of your paper that explicate, defend, and support your thesis. Use your conclusion as a climax for your ideas.

Here are some examples of persuasion in various contexts to help you think about examples from your own experience:

An academic persuasive essay about your community’s need for a free spay/neuter program
In all of these situations, you need to choose the most appropriate audience, method of communication, and evidence to convey your argument and persuade others to agree with you.

In the first paragraph, describe an example of effective persuasive communication in personal contexts such as social media posts, emails to friends, or communications to your child’s teachers and explain the considerations you must keep in mind to communicate effectively in these personal communications. .

In the second paragraph, describe an example of effective persuasive communication in professional contexts.  You can consider your own field of study and the expectations for writing effectively in that field and explain how that communication example illustrates the expectations for professional persuasive communication, or you could describe a communication you received in a professional context, such as a letter from a lawyer or business.

In the third paragraph, describe an example of effective persuasive communication in an academic context like a discussion board, assignment, or group presentation. In this paragraph, consider how academic persuasive standards differ from personal and professional writing.

Finally, you will often need to work as part of a team in academic and professional contexts.
