Effects of Divorce on Children

            Abstract

            The study reviewed literature on the effects of parents divorce upon the children. The research thus demonstrated that divorce can cause numerous effects on the children which leads to broken relationships. Divorce effects have become a challenge that affects the social life of children as well as the parents.  This has therefore caused parents as well as professions to develop the concern on the effects of parents divorce on the children based on different ages. This research is therefore crucial in helping individuals to develop understanding that it is challenging for the children to get over divorce. This research therefore considered the effects of divorce on all children. Divorce was established as traumatic event to the children’s personal life as it influences behaviors and the development of an individual. Divorce was also established to be influencing factor o emotional and physical damages on the children that are involved. Divorce is perhaps one of the most frustrating societal issue I the world today. This is because it has continuously affected the lives of individuals. In the past decades parents’ divorce and separation has become an undertaking that is casual.  This is an unfortunate situation in which most children are forced to live with yet it causes un-repayable damages. This was therefore achieved by considering prior research o the matter summarization of the study’s findings as well as analyzing. Through the literature review of this study, the paper attempts to examine and determine the effects of separation on the children the paper will therefore seek to investigate the impacts of divorce on children in the literature review.

Literature review

Introduction

Decisive Marriage end is disastrous and the effects that it generates riffles throughout the lives of those that are connected to the divorced couple. Stress and chaos are some psychological effects that have been linked to divorce, proceed and the effects of a divided family.  Children are more vulnerable to the impacts of divorce (Faber, & Wittenborn, 2010). This is mainly because they are unable to process and understand complex maters of life as thy results to optional expressions such as confusion and heartache. According to Faber, & Wittenborn, (2010) divorce does not cause any damage to children in negative form. The negative results of divorce often results  from uncertainty feeling of things that are to happen after the procedure of divorce from conflict level between parents. The consequences of ending marriage  is that  they move to distinct places  locations, in different schools and therefore they are not able to see both parents at similar  time because most of the time they are forced. Negative effects of divorce of the children include grief, sadness, guilt, lowered education achievement, socio economic challenges and relationships difficulties (Faber, & Wittenborn, 2010).

According to, Finley, & Schwartz, (2010), divorce affects children in different modes. Divorce is an unintended family life event and it is a situation that affects people in the family in different ways (Finley, & Schwartz, 2010). The relationship that existed before the occurrence of divorce between parents and children may cause stress to children.  The relationship between parents and children can be used as a representation of how children view relationship when they grow up.  Many transformations occur during the procedure and after divorce which impacts different relationships (Finley, & Schwartz, 2010). Divorce therefore causes negative effect on the children as spending of time  between the parents and the children is reduced and therefore the degree of the distance that grows between them is crucial is showing attachment (Rose, 2009). The end of any marriage affects the relationship connection between all individuals but those that are affected the most are the children.  This affects then the most because they are characterized with immaturity and innocence and therefore they are unable to control stressful situations like the adults.  The children therefore react in distinct ways which can range from subtle to being reactive (Finley, & Schwartz, 2010).

Thomas, & Woodside, (2011), divorce is the main stressor in life and is a lengthy procedure which usually results in long term psychological and emotional breakages to children.  Divorce effects on children cause both economic and social challenges. several studies states that  that children in preschool pollution ages are the most affected by divorce and others insists that there are no vulnerable ages (Thomas, & Woodside, 2011).  Children involved in divorce were thus found to portray internalizing and externalizing issues such as emotional challenges, grief, fear, sadness, aggression, low achievements in education and raised rate of absenteeism. In addition divorce was established to impact children based on gender (Thomas, & Woodside, 2011). This is because boys are characterized with aggression and the girls were established with raised depression. Additionally divorce was established to a profound impact on the relationship between children and the parents which is caused by lack of social support from the family.  The effects of divorce on children is limited to at least two years  but also long term effects were also established  like lowered attainment in education.  The most influencing and relating factor to the negative impacts of divorce is the discords of the parents. In addition family conflict was also established to be a mediating variable of children’s divorce (Thomas, & Woodside, 2011).

Research Questions

What is the magnitude of the impacts that are associated with parental divorce?

Are the relations between children and parental divorce related to the functioning of children?

To what extend are the effects associations’ causal and what are the particular surrounding factors that explain the associations?

Results Analysis

Divorce is associated with at least a third to the increase of children’s impairment such as school drop outs or even the children experiencing their own divorce. 

Methodology

A descriptive study methodology was utilized in determining the effects of parental divorce on the children.  The target population for the research was parents and children who are involved in divorce event.  A random survey in collaboration with questionnaires was adopted as it is characterized with low cost, range information, flexibility, speed and availability.  Sampling of the population was also conducted which entailed parents and children in order to collect specified information which is helpful in gaining efficiency and reliability.   A hundred parents including both men and women were selected, a hundred children from both genders were also selected.

Data was thus collected by emailing the questionnaires to the respondents which were then returned to the researcher at the agreed time.  Out of the two hundred selected respondents 120 questionnaires were returned.  Numeric data was then analyzed in a measure of qualitative by utilizing quick impression in order to summarize the given information.  Qualitative data was analyzed manually as it is associated with simplicity and information ease.  This was therefore conducted in order to obtain preliminary results and the results nature which had been used.

Target Population

 The study’s target population involved individuals of ages between 15-60 years who have been engaged in the event of divorce in life course.   The total target population was therefore 200 individuals with a responsive rate of 120 individuals.

Instrumentation

 Gathering of data for the research involved a survey design approached where questionnaires were randomly sent to the respondents. The questionnaires used contained both closed and open ended questions to increase the range of data being collected as well as raise the reliability of the study.

Methodology Rational

The approach of survey was selected because it essential in gathering emotional, attitude and data concerning individual opinions.  Divorce is a social issue and therefore understanding the effects it causes on the children the methodology was highly required. In addition the method was chosen to yield adequate and accurate information from the respondents. This is because the method is not biased and this helps in building trust between the researcher and the respondents.

Results Analysis and Discussion

Most of the respondents agreed that divorce has caused low academic achievement. This is because divorce caused them to develop lower confidence I conducting activities. This therefore lowered their concentration in school. In addition grief is also generated from divorce which makes it hard for the children to adapt to changes as they are stuck on the issues at home.

In addition the children also agreed that divorce affects other life elements like communication. This is because communication becomes difficult as they are unable to express themselves due to the overwhelming sadness that they experience.  Additionally the gender that was established to be the most affected is the women. This is because they are characterized with lower ability to handle emotions as compared to the male gender.  However the male gender was established to hold higher rate f aggressiveness than the female. Both genders agreed that after the divorce of their parents made them feel responsible and these results to guilt. Moreover divorce was indicated as a great influence on social withdrawal which is caused by self denial as the involved children are not ready to interact due to emotional impairment.

In conclusion parental divorce is characterized with increased risks for academic, psychological and social problems throughout the life of the children.  Parental divorce experienced grief and aggressiveness which causes impairment issues. Children who experience parental divorce are more likely to experience emotional distress after the divorce.   Divorce drains psychologically, emotionally, and financially for the children and the effects of divorce involve a negative financial impact on the family because the health issues that are caused on the children sometimes proves to drain the family financially. In order for the divorce effects to be reduced the parents have to solve the conflicts in preserved ways in order to avoid harming the children. If the issues cannot resolved the parents should try and dedicate adequate time to the children to enable them to move on and adjust to the changes. This is therefore essential because the parents are provided with social support which help in reducing sadness and grief which may lead to emotional impairments.

There has been the persistence of demand of the programs that have been promoting healthy youth growth.  These programs claim to prevent youth behaviors but they only promote only the programs that are logical and are proofed to be real.             The brain is therefore effective in controlling antisocial behavior because the minds of criminals involved in antisocial behaviors tend to react differently (Lofrida , Palumbo, & pallegrin, 2014). The mutual feature of antisocial rule breaking conduct is the central influence of antisocial behaviors.  Antisocial behavior is characterized by failure to follow the moral guidelines which is driven by the mental or the brain condition of an individual (Lofrida , Palumbo, & pallegrin, 2014).  The frontal lobe impairment has been linked to be influencing antisocial behaviors and mostly murder. This is because the individuals are unable to control aggressive behavior of impulses which are associated with decreased orbitofrontal metabolism, decreased medical frontal and frontal regions. The reduction of the frontal lobe leads to a decrease in the blood flow in the frontal which in turn leads to increased aggressive and antisocial conducts (Lofrida , Palumbo, & pallegrin, 2014).

            Several studies have established that reduced gray frontal steers antisocial behaviors in the psychopathic individuals (Blair, 2004).  The individuals with lobe epilepsy tend to respond in aggressive ways because they are associated with conduct disorder.             In the anterior inferior temporal cortex individuals with reduced cortex metabolism are established to respond with violence (Raine, 2002).  This is therefore caused by the education of blood flow in the left side of the inferior anterior temporal cortex.  On the part of the superior temporal gyrus the study revealed the deficits of activation in psychopathic and antisocial individuals which is localized to the upper posterior of the gyrus superior temporal in the processing of semantic task.  This is caused by reduced activation in the left side hemisphere temporal superior gyrus in conducting memory tasks effectively.             Dysfunction of the OFC is linked with poor control of inhibitory, decision making emotions, and punishment processing in antisocial persons and the involvement of DLPFC dysfunction may also lead to poor perseveration off responses (Raine, 2002). It is therefore car that the impairment of a brain region can lead to antisocial behavior based on distinct reasons. However there are no established brain structures that are linked to the development of antisocial conduct. This is because the larger number of the impairments of neural across different cognitive and domains effectives are highly related to antisocial lifestyle adoption (Raine, 2002).

            In conclusion, the brain configuration is the most influential aspect in antisocial behaviors. This is because the brain is effective in controlling the conduct and decision-making procedures of an individual. The biological set up of the brain is, therefore, crucial to the development of antisocial behaviors. The breakdown of any part of the brain may result in the occurrence of antisocial conduct because the individual’s ability to control emotions is broken. This gives rise to the development of emotional impairments which in turn influences and increases the urge of an individual to break the social and moral rules. The impairment of the brain can be solved by health nutrition because poor nutrition is reported to be associated with the poor functioning of the brain.  This results to neurocognitive which is the impairment of the brain parts which increases the chances of antisocial conduct.             The Alutiiq culture holds firm values, practices and conducts that are based on the traditional. The Alutiiq people are traditional designed individuals and they are organized in community form in their societies.  This is because the community’s values the form of working together which helps in accomplishing the social activities. The people are based on traditional practices because they still practice traditional festivals such as weaving and dancing which are conducted annually.  The social relation of the Alutiiq people between different groups helps in ensuring that the community is connected and lives as one (Steffian & Laktonen, 2008).  The relation of the Alutiiq with other external groups is good though not socially expressed because most of the groups are not based on their traditional values as the values have been eroded by advancement.  The organization of people in groups is crucial to maintaining and sustaining they are social, economic and spiritual beliefs.  The religious activities help in keeping the people together since the activities are conducted on repeated basis.  The social, economic and political conducts of the Alutiiq people are influenced by the communal corporation where the economic activities are driven by clusters (Steffian & Laktonen, 2008). 

            The Alutiiq societies’ operations are guided by traditional principles as, there exist clear and defined tasks and individuals are therefore required to come together in order to accomplish specific tasks. Therefore, the social institutions of the Alutiiq people are completely governed by the cultural rules (Steffian & Laktonen, 2008). This can be described as the principles and the expectations that clearly regulate and provide guidance on the daily life behaviors of individuals in the society.  Understanding the roles that one is supposed to play in the community as well I as in the family helps the groups in staying together (Steffian & Laktonen, 2008). The values of the Alutiiq individuals are expressed in the social activities in that they come together and conduct the traditional activities such as dancing which is crucial in ensuring that the value of togetherness is sustained.  In additional they ensure that every individual understands how the social activities are conducted and the importance of conducting them together which is done in groups. The community is based on collectivism which ensures that the individual communication with the groups is effective and this is achieved through good communal relations. The culture therefore encourages people to work in  clusters in order to achieve better results (Steffian & Laktonen, 2008).

            The Alutiiq culture is characterized by  Ethnocentrism which can  be explained as the mode of making wrong assumptions in regard to the experience limitation.  This is the principle in which people believe that their cultural values of beliefs are better than others (Steffian & Laktonen, 2008). Individuals who are ethnocentric tend to judge others in relation to their ethnic of a cultural group with concern to their customs, religion, practices and languages. Because of the Eskimos cultural values most individuals use the term Eskimo in reference to different sets of relative cultures (Steffian & Laktonen, 2008).  The term Eskimo is, used in reference of the Alutiiq people because of their traditional practices. The term is used in regard of their behaviors, language and conduct. This is based on the fact that people believe that Eskimo eat raw meat thus making their cultural practices unvaried (Steffian & Laktonen, 2008).

            The Alutiip culture changed due to the availability of European exports.  This transformed their economic activities which lead them to adopt different economic practices.  Activities such as clothing and adaptation of the European clothing have gradually changed the lifestyle of the Alutiiq people (Steffian & Laktonen, 2008).  The innovational economic advances have also been adopted as the economic activities because of the availability of good infrastructure, airlines as well as commercial activities.  These activities have thus replaced the hunting and weaving activities. Farming is still depended on by the Alutiiq people though it is done is a smaller portion compared to before (Steffian & Laktonen, 2008).

            The Alutiiq culture is under Transformation because the values have not completely been changed or influenced by the growing factors and they are therefore based on traditional laws. This is in that the values are still rooted in old practices (Steffian & Laktonen, 2008). Most of the societies today do not practice activities such as festival like the Alutiiq people. In addition, the Alutiiq cosmology is slowly developing because of the traditional beliefs which are based on social and spiritual practices. In addition, the cultural rules of the Alutiiq individuals encourage collectivism which promotes accomplishing of activities as a group. In modern society individualism is highly encouraged in order to establish the potential of individual and this makes their cosmology be undeveloped (Steffian & Laktonen, 2008).

            The social structure of the Alutiiq people is crucial in defining the gender roles were women take care of the families while the men are responsible for the well-being of their families (Steffian & Laktonen, 2008). The material culture of the Alutiiq culture is the resources, physical objects and spaces utilized by the Alutiiq people in defining their culture (Steffian & Laktonen, 2008). The Alutiiq material culture is represented by the family structure, community structures, and religious institutions. Their nonphysical culture is represented by their cultural rules which are founded on tradition, language, values and religious beliefs. Modern economic activities are therefore practiced in the generation of income. The adaptation of technology is also reflected in their calendars as those instruments that were used before have thus been overcome by fresh ones like the modern knives and clothing’s.  In respect to the Alutiiq culture, this is represented by their regular religious practices and festivals which help in sustaining their cultural values (Steffian & Laktonen, 2008).

Childhood Education

            We have a tendency of perceiving play as a something to be done by kids and adults normally take it as an issue of less concern due to the work ethic culture. According to Stuart Browne in his TED, he demonstrated that play is something frivolous not only for children (Brown, 2008). He stated that since animals play, then it should also be important for human beings to do the same as part of genetic inheritance. Play is important in developmental biological function. Brown was of much concern of the culture that does not foster play in adulthood. According to Brown, play is an integral activity that everyone should participate often without undermining it regardless of the age (Brown, 2008). It provides someone with a spontaneous form of mindfulness therefore by getting engaged in play, we find ourselves in a state of mindfulness. Therefore, play is important to everyone regardless of the age and failure to do it results to unfitness in the body functionality.

            By following the childhood curriculum, childhood educators understand very well that play is an important section of children’s life (Lillemyr, 2009). As part of their professional duty, childhood educators use play as a skill that can help them teach and make children understand. Children are taught through playing. This kind of teaching helps the children develop both health wise and mind wise (Lillemyr, 2009). Basing on the views by the proponents of the concept, childhood educators are always trained to actively involve all their children in play so as to enhance the physical, emotional and creative growth. A child with limited involvement to play is always viewed to be dull, and less creative.

            Sociological perspective on the current families and their predicaments are mostly based on functional, conflict and social interactions.  The functional perspective of the family explains that communal institutions works on the important functions to help in the preservation of social steadiness and keep the society functioning.  Well understanding of the functional perspective of a family highlights the ways in which the family as a social institution helps in making the society possible.  This shows how a family performs several essential social functions.  The main approach to family globalization mainly focuses on the economic and political appearances. Parents in the family argue about the breadwinning and domestic works where their children argue on the new philosophical and family roles.  Families contribute to the initial socialization of their offspring’s and as a foundation of adult documentation (Charon, 2013).

             A view on my own family is that it is legally, economically and culturally privileged.  This is an advantage to my family members although these advantages are not equally shared and are followed by great prices for some domestic associates. Those persons, not involved in the household status, encounter disgraces and hardships. Account does not maintain the idea that entirely relations were made to have the same privileged living based on the period and residence.  Account thus proofs the communal arrangement of domestic procedures and freedoms that specific family’s converse.  A family’s perception is infused with symbolic meanings and their life experiences.  Through its form, a family gives the most primitive types of encouragement, protection and socialization within its members (Charon, 2013). 

            As people become more connected by the globalization forces, families and their relationships still remain reliable and have their most concern to the family members.  In spite the generality and steadiness of some models of familial relationships through the human account, there is no common definition of what family is.  The social revolution based on the family issues has continued to influence the modern debates on families based on their notions. Ideas on the model, purpose and the usefulness of relations alternate over period and impact to unique historical, political, economic and social approaches. Relatives endure to have a durable social approach as certain of their associations on blood relation and relatives encounter varying models. Many cultures use symbols to show their history to descent (Charon, 2013). 

            The approach on how my parents met was like a film.  My mum worked as a secretary at a law corporation when she was on her twenties and my dad had just graduated from a law school and already working in another law corporation.  My mum’s boss had a few connections with the corporation that my father worked and whenever my dad would call the boss, mum was responsible for picking the call. He and mum would talk much whenever he made a call, they moved along well and he had once asked her for an out over the phone but mu declined the request as she always tell me that she had a mental sense of him in her head that was not pleasant as she had not already met him (Charon, 2013). 

            After a year of full of phone conversations, one morning there appeared a tall, dark man who was more handsome and walked into mum’s office for a meeting with the boss. Mum’s unpleasant image of the man was now off and my dad was a protrusion.  He had to take her out for lunch and since that day they started dating where they got married a year later.  They had a strong relationship that I also dream of having in the future.  Unfortunately mum passed away a few years ago but they had their amazing 30 years of a happy marriage and till today they would be still together.  The sociology perspective has been used by many families to address their problems within the society through various ways based on philosophy and then experimented through the proof that can be assessed and is more sensible.  Viewing my family as a minor culture, I can well comprehend in what way these approaches can be casted to assess and spot-on the family complications (Giddens & Sutton, 2010). 

            In the domestic section, there are the communal characters that the family associates gross and are known by each person in the family.  For instance, usually, the father is the family head with the mum the next spouse head.  The special family configurations that are prevailing in America are resulting to essential inquiries about the family characters and the effects it will have to the external culture.  It is common to have lone parented relatives that associate dual family sections and other groupings.  The notion of that there is a control authority contained by the family culture and every associate has their own society characters.  By means of the sociological perspective in the family it is like practicing it at the small glassy. The small glassy considers the minimum public such as the family.  Comparable to any other sociologist, for one to practice knowledge inside the society, one should mainly appreciate the society. It would be essential for a family associate to be aware of the features that form the family society (Giddens & Sutton, 2010). 

            These features include socialization, this is making of common ideas that lead to the norms of a micro society. Socialization indicates how one should interact with the society, this can be portrayed by distribution of each meal at the table as a substitute of eating in front of the TV set and this will create a family discussion.  Exclusion is another feature which is the parting of the shares of a parts of civilization that role better when excluded from the entire.  Viewing this through the sociological perspective in a family, there are some tasks that the family members are more comfortable doing on their own which can lead to conflicts. Ceremonies are also involved in the families, these are deeds that are recurrent and have connections for the civilization in a specific state. These actions happen subsequent to environment and are probable, such as placing a kid earlier in bed can be a habit inside the domestic unit. Authorizing is another feature that is approached through sociology. This is individual relation of understanding other person’s movements and communication and defines the suitable manner within the family culture.  By defining these actions and communications, associates within the culture respond to diverse conditions as they are aware of every situation.  Through accepting in what way these features form the intimates, one can well comprehend the connections among the domestic associates and the thoughts and responses that are common as a family society.  Through the cases of children that create problems, it could be a denial to approve the social role in the family (Giddens & Sutton, 2010). 

            This can be done by making them understand the social approach and explaining how its factors into the children society makes it possible to understand the need of such regulations.  By using the sociological approach, you can recognize which factors are essential to each of the family members and what is working with the current policies and get an idea of how to deal with the problems.  Questioning tactic of sociological approach is a way of deriving evidence that can be assessed through a sensual emotion and give the chance to view a family associate with is additional sociology approach for deriving facts.   A family holiday would be a way of applying the sociological approaches.  This is a rule that affects the whole family where if one person is displeased with the rule, can affect the happiness of the whole family.  Social roles must be focused in the family vacation (Lawler, 2008). 

            The sociology skills can also help in the communication improvement within the family.  Age causes barriers due to the specific societies outside the family that members belong to.  There are specific ways in which one can apply the sociological perspective within the family.  By viewing the small family society, one can well assess where advances can be prepared to create the civilization meaning improved to encounter the need of every family associate. Based on the sociological perspective, the meaning of marriage is also alternating.  The happiness and fulfillment through emotional bonding is proving to be a bread winner.  The marriage relationship has become commoditized where there are counselors as the family couple interacts with the counselors helping them sort out what they want.  Birth control methods have removed the connection between marriage and children and this has affected marriage in the human history.  Therefore when we do not recognize what main form and structure of the family and marriage will affect the culture of the new economy; it is certain that the two parents and their children will be one option among many others recognize the arrangements.  It is now evident that the range of coupling is developing and families can be used to settle the relation of the new economy (Lawler, 2008). 

            The old notion of that its either one is married or not, no longer describes the present social perspective based on the couples.  Presently, marriage relates to the level of marriage commitment although most couples do not portray the commitment. The advantage that is there in most families is that basis on economic culture makes the marriage commitment hard to sustain.  Families should give children their own rights as observed that parents change their attitudes and actions through sexual revolution and the needs of the changing economic system.  These attitudes and behavior changes in a faster pace thus coupling means closing the cultural relation and the real behaviors of social approaches.  Low income families experience negative results such as death, unemployment, poor health, divorce and criminal sentences.  When these negative circumstances happen, sociology affects the family’s capability to mitigate their setback.  These negative events lead to stress where this stress makes children to have various growth problems. These less financial families have the parents who less read and speak to their children, causing them develop mental and reading skills which results to poor school performance.   All these reasons show how the social approach shapes how children change since their conception and to adulthood.  This sociology approach depicts many negative outcomes of living in a low financial or a rich family; it underpins the need to help such families (Lawler, 2008).
