One of the strategies of the PR consultants in the first news story was getting Red Cross first-aid kits included in an episode of The Real World and Red Cross vehicles in an episode of The West Wing. The Red Cross received 60 percent of the $3.6 billion that Americans donated for hurricane relief. Millions of people saw these TV shows and the name of the American Red Cross. Research/Reflection Paper – The major writing assignment of the semester asks you to critically reflect on what you have learned about communication in organizations. This paper should be 6-8 full pages in length, typed, double-spaced, 12 pt. font, Times New Roman, with 1” margins and must use APA style and citation guidelines. The paper should have a properly formatted cover page and references (no abstract is needed). The project must utilize a minimum of 5 outside references (only 1 of which can be a web site; you can use more web sites, but they do not count toward the minimum of five). You can reference the textbook and/or articles from the references at the end of each chapter. In addition, you will want to look in academic communication journals to find concepts and arguments that further your analysis. You can find these journals by accessing Communication and Mass Media Index on the UNM Library’s database website. You may also find the website “Google Scholar” a useful starting place. Your sources should relate to communication in some way. Some good journals to look at include: Journal of International and Intercultural Communication, Western Journal of Communication, Communication Theory, Critical and Cultural Studies, Text and Performance Quarterly, Critical Studies in Media Communication, Discourse & Society, etc. Your options are certainly not limited to these journals. Wikipedia is not a credible source and should not be used in your paper. You can always get help finding journals and articles from the online librarians at the UNM libraries homepage. This assignment is worth 100 points.
You will choose three of the case studies at the end of the chapters of your text. The only chapters you may NOT use are Chapter One and Chapter Fourteen. I would recommend choosing case studies from the chapters you enjoyed most. You should analyze the cases first and then do your research, looking for articles that deal with the pertinent topics from those chapters that also relate to the cases. Your goal is to assess the problems involved in each case, make recommendations based on your assessment, find research that supports both your assessment and your recommendations, and make original arguments that display the knowledge you have gained throughout the semester.
Grading Criteria for Paper The paper is graded on the following criteria: (a) grammar/spelling (b) organization/structure, (c) accuracy, (d) originality of arguments/analysis, (e) depth of critical thinking, (f) quality of arguments—using course concepts and research to support opinions, and (g) following instructions. I also want to emphasize a couple of other points: • I have high standards for excellent work. To receive an excellent grade you will need to work hard and do excellent work. Hard work is necessary, but not sufficient to receive high grades. Remember that excellence means going above and beyond minimum effort (this does not apply to page limits—those must be met).
• I will provide detailed feedback about your performance.

Many Chinese companies provide “dormitories” for their workers requiring employees to remain there away from their families and to work 10 to 12 hours a day 6 days a week at very low wages. Saturdays are considered a normal business day throughout Chinese industry. Employees are allowed to visit their families one weekend per month though many cannot do so since their families live too far away. In other words, how Foxconn (Apple’s subcontractor) is treating workers is quite normal in China.
Discuss these issues and questions:
1. Compare and contrast Apple’s and HP’s approach and the conditions at their respective suppliers Foxconn and Quanta.
2. What improvements has Foxconn made since the original story? How effective do you think those improvements have been? What do you think of the progress that has been made? Should Apple have been criticized for the working conditions at Foxconn? Why or why not? Should they still be criticized?
3. What ethical responsibilities does Apple have towards Foxconn’s workers in China? What should Apple do now, if anything? Should Apple and HP hold their suppliers to host country standards (i.e., China), home country standards (i.e., US) or something in between? Why?

You have been asked to create a communication plan as part of the interview process for a management position on your team. In your plan, be sure to discuss:
Team Dynamics: Before you can develop a plan to manage yourself and your team, you must first analyze the team dynamics of the specific team. This analysis will then inform the development of your collaboration strategies. As you analyze the team dynamics, be sure to:
Describe the age and cultural differences among the people on the team.
Based on these differences, describe the implicit biases that might be at play on the team. Explain how these biases may impact team communication.
Describe difficult situations that may occur with challenging employees on the team. How will these situations make communication more difficult? For example, what might happen when you have to manage your coworkers who were not promoted?
Personal Approach: As part of your communication plan, the hiring committee has asked you to explain how you will manage yourself as a leader. Specifically, how will you use what you know about emotional intelligence to analyze your personal approach to management? How will this knowledge help you manage the specific team dynamics? As you describe your personal approach, be sure to:
Describe how you will assess your own strengths and weaknesses as a leader and your plan to continuously improve these skills.
Explain how you will address your own biases and use empathy when communicating with the diverse team.

Collaboration Strategies: The hiring committee has also asked you to explain your strategy for collaborating with the team. As you develop your plan, be sure to:
Explain how you can create a safe, open environment that encourages feedback to build relationships within the team. For example, will you establish specific group norms?
Describe how you will take culture and age into consideration. How will you promote effective collaboration within this diverse team? For example, how will you ensure that communication is relevant and appropriate for all members of the team?
Describe the strategies you will use to collaborate with challenging employees. For example, how will you manage the employees who did not receive the promotion?
Communication Plan Develop your personal approach to managing a team and plan your collaboration strategies. Explain how you will create a positive and productive team dynamic. Proposal topic: Relation between unemployment and mass shootings
Proposal should have the following sections:
Introduction: identify specific research question and the general context for the study. In this section include: a statement of the problem or general research question and context leading to a clear statement of the specific research question; background and contextual material justifying why this case or topic should be studied; and a purpose statement.
Literature Review: This short preliminary literature review section reviews the literature important to your specific research question. The literature review focuses on discussing how other researchers have addressed the same or similar research questions. It introduces the study and places it in a larger context that includes a discussion of why it is important to study this case. It provides the current state of accumulated knowledge as it relates to your specific research question. In this section: Summarize the general state of the literature (cumulative knowledge base) on the specific research question. For example, if you discuss other studies that have been conducted you would summarize the researcher's findings, how those findings were obtained, and conduct an evaluation of biases in the findings. This section should provide a broad overview of the primary arguments related to the topic and organizes the general views on the main aspects of the topic by theme, which could be the prevailing arguments or schools of thought, or commonly held beliefs that your particular topic may challenge. Include a short conclusion and transition to the next section. In literature review, discuss the theoretical framework to be used in the study. You should ensure you cover the following in your discussion: a summary of the theory or model to be used in the study, including a diagram of the model if appropriate; comment on the kinds of questions this theory has been used to answer in the past and why it is appropriate to use in this proposed study discussion of the current knowledge gaps. This is an opportunity to once again promote the importance of your own research. How will the research fit within this larger body of knowledge? What are you doing differently? What gaps will the research fill?
include a transition into methodology section.
Research Design and Methods: Describes how to answer research question or test the hypothesis. This section describes the overall research design and how to plan to collect, synthesize, and interpret data. It should include: identification and operationalization (measurement) of variables; a sampling plan (i.e., study population and sampling procedures, if appropriate); justification of case studies used; data collection/sources (secondary literature, archives, interviews, surveys, etc.); a summary of analysis procedures (pattern-matching, etc.); and the limitations of the study and bias discussion. Conclusion: Reemphasizes the importance of your study and ties the proposal together.
