Introduction to Educational Psychology
Educational psychology is the science of teaching and learning. It integrates theories of learning with research on variables that impact teaching and learning and what maximizes learning. Understanding factors that interfere with and maximize learning reduces learner frustration and leads to greater learning.

To learn more about the history, evolution, and contributions to educational psychology, read the following resource.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a brain development condition that impacts a person's ability to socialize and communicate with others. A person with autism spectrum disorder is often uncomfortable in social situations, is hypersensitive to loud noises, has difficulty with changes, experiences empathetic challenges, and engages in repetitive behaviors (Carlson & Birkett, 2017). This syndrome was named and characterized by Kanner in 1943 using auto meaning "self" and ism meaning "condition". This was supposed to refer to a child being self-absorbed but as time went on, research around ASD continued, researchers learned that ASD was so much more than just a child's self-absorption (Carlson & Birkett, 2017).

Autism spectrum disorder is four times more prevalent in males than in females. At one point in time. ASD was believed to be more prevalent in families with a higher socioeconomic class. However, as time went on, scientists quickly found that all socioeconomic classes run the same risk for having kids with ASD. As ASD has become more prevalent in today's society and people are becoming more aware, the diagnostic criteria have broadened making the incidence of ASD more apparent (Carlson & Birkett, 2017).

Autism spectrum disorder has no cure and there is no medication available to treat it as a whole. However, some mediations are available to treat specific symptoms such as seizures, depression, and lack of ability to focus. As of now, applied behavior analysis and pharmacotherapy are popular treatments. The goals of these types of therapies are to maximize the patient's quality of life and assisting them to become more independent. This is done by promoting socialization, reducing maladaptive behaviors, facilitating development, and educating families (Shenoy, Inldla & Reddy, 2017).

Since there is no treatment for ASD, the most people are able to do is manage symptoms. To give the patient their best shot at being successful, diagnosing and beginning interventions early are the best ways to give the patient a head start. Developing a team of healthcare professionals such as a developmental pediatrician, child psychiatrist, behavioral therapist, speech therapist, psychologist, specialist teacher, and social worker is very important (Shenoy, Inldla & Reddy, 2017).  These people are the support team helping parents manage their child's autism. Using Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) is extremely helpful. This therapy is based on learning and operant conditioning. Positive reinforcement is key using things such as verbal praise, edible rewards, or tokens (Shenoy, Inldla & Reddy, 2017). Using ABA therapy has shown a major positive influence on these children's intellectual functioning, daily living skills, social functioning, and language development.

Empowerment Theory:

Select feminist theory or empowerment theory. Summarize the underlying principles and values of the theory in 3 to 4 brief sentences:

I chose the Empowerment Theory some of the underlying principles of Empowerment Theory are to make connections between social and economic injustice and an individual’s pain and suffering. (Adams (2008). Empowerment Theory works with clients who are oppressed, women, African American women as well as individual who are in poverty. Values of Empowerment Theory allows social workers to help clients to build self-reflection skills on an issue that the client presents in therapy. Social workers help clients build problem solving and person-environment transactions, including the client’s role

and experience of oppression. (Germain &Gitterman, 1996).

Analyze the extent to which the underlying principles and values of the theory are consistent with the NASW Code of Ethics in 3 to 4 brief sentences:

The underlying principles and values of the Empowerment Theory are consistent with the NASW code of ethics including the value: Service which is to help people in need and to address social problems. The value: Social Justice which challenges social injustice that pursues social change, particularly with and on behalf of vulnerable and oppressed individuals and groups of people, and the value: Dignity and Worth of the Person which Social workers treat each person in a caring and respectful fashion and being culturally competent to other cultures other than the social workers own culture. (https://www.socialworkers.org/About/Ethics/Code-of-Ethics/Code-of-Ethics-English). As a social worker it is important to ask the question “Because we are of different cultures, what is one thing about your culture that is different than mine that you would like me to know in order to better understand where you come from?”

Briefly describe a client from your fieldwork experience and their presenting problem in 2 to 3 sentences using the theory you selected:

In my undergrad field experience I worked with first graders teaching them how to read and spell. Our inner city school has a large Burmese population. My client who was from Burma, and I was teaching her to read.I used the Empowerment Theory by helping her build her-self esteem. Other students made fun of her for not speaking English very well. I worked with her and an interpreter to help build her self esteem by telling her she had over come many obstacles. She had moved to a new country for a better life and is making new friends and speaking a new language.

Identify one ethical standard from the NASW Code of Ethics that would apply to the client you described:

I would apply the ethical standard 1.05 Cultural Awareness and Social Diversity to my client because she is of a different culture than I am it is important to understand the Burmese culture when working in the school system. The Burmese culture expects their children to succeed in school and get the best education available to them so their children will have careers such as engineers, doctors, and lawyers. The Burmese culture takes great pride and values education so the kids can have a better life than their parents were able to have in Burma. (https://www.socialworkers.org/About/Ethics/Code-of-Ethics/Code-of-Ethics-English. )

Explain how the theory is consistent with the work you did with the client and the ethical standard:

The Empowerment Theory is consistent with the work I did because my student came from an oppressed culture in her homeland of Burma. Fleeing to America it allowed my client to become empowered to have a better life. This allowed her the opportunity to further her education so she was able to adhere to the cultural expectations of her parents regarding schooling in America. The ethical standards of cultural awareness and social diversity where met because my client through the interpreter was able to tell me what her culture expects from her parents regarding schooling and their expectations. In American standards and social diversity academics are second to extra circular activities where the Burmese hold academics above extra circular activities.

RE: Discussion - Week 7
COLLAPSE
The theory I chose to focus on for this discussion is the empowerment theory. To briefly overview, the empowerment theory “makes connections between social and economic injustice and individual pain and suffering” (Turner, 2017)and also “enables practitioners to co-investigate reality and challenge obstacles with people who are poor, and to stand with people who are pushed to the edge of American or global society” (Turner, 2017). Empowerment theory focuses on the interlocking dimensions of empowerment, which are “development of a more positive and potent sense of self, construction of knowledge and capacity for more critical comprehension of the web of social and political realities of one’s environment, and cultivation of resources and strategies for more functional competence, for attainment of personal and collective social goals, or liberation” (Turner, 2017). Empowerment theory emphasizes having skills to promote coping and adaptation or social changes, skills to bolster motivation, skills to maintain psychic comfort and self-esteem, the ability to enhance problem solving and promote self-direction, the skills to promote social change. Social workers and clients work together to focus on these aspects to will allow room to give hope and to work to improve the overall quality of life for clients.

Empowerment Theory tends to align especially with service, social justice, and dignity and worth of the person. The value of service focuses on social workers ability to “draw on their knowledge, values, and skills to help people in need and address social problems” (Code of Ethics: English, 2020). The value of social justice focuses on the social worker’s pursuit of social justice and focuses on ensuring that the oppressed have access to needed information and resources and other services. Dignity and worth of a person allows social workers to “promote clients’ social responsible self-determination” (Code of Ethics: English, 2020) and seeks to “enhance clients’ capacity and opportunity to change and to address their own needs” (Code of Ethics: English, 2020). These values come together underneath the umbrella of the empowerment approach to promote change within clients and again offer a sense of hope, as clients’ needs are met.

During my senior year of undergrad, my fieldwork was with Petersburg Department of Social Services. I had a client that I will call Ms. T, whom was a single mother of four children living in an impoverished and dangerous area. She had recently become unemployed and struggling to keep up with the demands of maintaining a household on her own and parenthood following the unexpected death of her longtime partner whom was the father of her children. Ms. T had one child whom was of school age that missed excessive amounts of school, which prompted a call to social services due to their partnership with the school system.

The Ethical standard I would apply to this client is self-determination. In this, the “social workers respect and promote the right of clients to self-determination and assist clients in their efforts to identify and clarify their goals” (Code of Ethics: English, 2020). In the case of Ms. T, she was aware of the issues plaguing her and was determined to make changes in order to improve the quality of life for herself and her children.

The empowerment theory works to give clients hope and meet their needs, as well as promote determination and give them access to resources needed to improve their quality of life. In my fieldwork, myself and the social worker I was with worked to ensure Ms. T had access to adequate resources, such as information about job fairs or open jobs and resume help as well as interview help, in order to aid her in her job hunt. We also worked to ensure there was transportation for her child to attend school regularly and no longer miss excessive amounts. We also worked to secure housing for her, to ensure that her need for housing – which is a basic necessity – was met. These were some of her main goals; securing employment and securing her housing were especially important to her and she was determined to have these goals met.

PLEASE READ AND FOLLOW ALL ASPECTS OF DIRECTIONS.
The purpose of this project is to compel students to identify a problem within their communities and to develop a new legal means of addressing that problem.
•This new legal means will be the development of a new municipal code for the cities that they live in.
•The first step is to make sure that the new municipal code is not against existing law or unconstitutional at the state or federal level.
•Your new municipal code cannot infringe on a person’s individual rights of movement, privacy, exercise of religion, etc.
•For example, restricting certain vehicles from parking on certain streets/locations IS NOT a restriction of a person’s movement.
•Some of the common problems that students may want to address are:
•Loitering at certain locations
•“Unlawful” gathering (gang deterrence)
•Parking of certain vehicles in certain areas (i.e. commercial trucks in residential neighborhoods, parking on lawns, etc.)
•Exterior home maintenance (home value preservation)
•The student’s municipal code proposal should be worded so that it will be easily understood by both city officials and the public that is affected.
•The proposal should briefly introduce the background of the problem;
•The proposed solution;
•Funding for enforcement;
•The enforcement entity (police, fire, animal control, etc);
•And finally, the actual language of the municipal code that you are proposing.
•If a sufficient municipal code or CA codified law already exists, you MUST discuss how to improve enforcement efforts so that the problem you identified is properly addressed.
•This project is limited to a 2-3 page proposal, in a single-spaced, block memorandum format. There is no APA requirement for the main body of the memorandum (refer to the next slide)
•An APA-formatted reference page is required with 1-2 references.

The Rough Draft must be at least 1000 words. This draft is generally the first time you type and weave together all your thoughts and information into one document. Try to get them into  paragraphs on the first shot, but if you can't, go in right after and cut and paste them into shape. If you are in the habit of just spilling it all out in "stream of consciousness" style the first time you write everything out, then that is more like prewriting and should be done at that stage of the writing
process as free writing.

You will not use direct quotes in this essay. If you are tempted, paraphrase or summarize instead. For more information on this, refer to the “Quotes...” handout provided in class.

Overall, the writing should be focused around a central point, although the exact thesis may still be coming together. Don’t worry about introductions or conclusions (that would be trying to sum up or sell something you don’t fully understand yet). Ideally, you’ll write this in one sitting. You won’t have to do too much digging or hard thinking because you did all that while generating your pre-
writing. Some new things might come up, but just add them in without too much thought to organization. Generally follow the organization of your detailed outline.

In the rough draft, you shouldn’t think too much about organization (beyond your outline), exact wording, spelling or grammar; there’ll be plenty of time for that during revision. “Just get your thoughts down and move forward,” is the driving motion here.

When you feel like you’ve written everything down, go back and shape the text into rough paragraphs. A rough draft may be newly cut and pasted without transitions between ideas.

As you begin to assess your Rough Draft, decide on a thesis (which may still be tentative) and start to focus your details to make sure they all support your thesis. You’ll also need to develop your essay by adding detail, explaining, and replacing telling details with “showing” details. Continue to focus as needed, but be open to your essay going deeper, changing directions, or growing beyond what you had originally planned. Those things are good----they show that you are learning something!

Still resist writing an introduction and a conclusion. If you feel like you are ready to attempt to tie the essay together, then try to do so in your prewriting or construct rough ones. That way, you are still leaving yourself open to moving to the next layer of understanding your thesis and purpose.

Also at this point, you can do a few development exercises with this draft. For the narrative sections, try “The 360 Degree View,” or ask yourself what all your senses recorded at a particular moment.

Remember: “How do I know what I think until I see what I’ve written?”

This draft is for you to see what you’ve written and then understand what you think. Sometimes you start off knowing what you think. Then the Rough Draft is your first attempt at explaining.

Do the “Focus and Paragraph Workshop,” and revise your essay into the First Draft.

Generally you should read over your corrected Rough Draft until you see a thesis rising out of it. Ask: What is the main point I want my reader to get out of this essay? Challenge yourself to give a specific answer.

Mental toughness lacks conceptual clarity and the question of whether or not such a nebulous concept can be reliably measured while capturing the essence of the perceived differences in perspective between the coach and athlete remains. The goal of this assignment is to engage in qualitative data collection and analysis by using a semi-structured interview designed to assess Mental Toughness through the eyes of the coach and athlete. You are required to interview 3 athletes and 3 coaches

Step 1 (25pts).You are being asked to interview 3 coaches. These coaches can be JU coaches, but do NOT have to be. I would prefer that the coaches you interview be collegiate level or above (semi-professional, professional or as discussed in class folks in leadership positions). Your task is to use the included interview guide to explore each coach's perspective on Mental Toughness.

After completing your interview, please transcribe the responses of your coaches using the headings provided on the interview guide and upload them along with your assignment to Blackboard.

Your assignment is to write a detailed summary of your interviews (approx.. 3 pages) that captures the trends and insights across your interviews and connect these to your readings throughout the term. Lastly, I would like for you to provide a definition of Mental Toughness that incorporates your personal perspective and takes into account the definitions provided by the coaches you have interviewed.

Step 2 (25pts).You are now being asked to interview 3 athletes. These athletes can be JU athletes, but do NOT have to be. I would prefer that the athletes you interview be collegiate level or above (semi-professional, professional). Your goal is to use the included interview guide to explore each athlete's perspective on Mental Toughness.

After completing your interview, please transcribe the responses of your athletes using the headings provided on the interview guide and upload them along with your assignment.

Your assignment is to write a detailed summary of your interviews (approx. 3 pages)  that captures the trends and insights across your interviews. Lastly, I would like for you to provide a definition of Mental Toughness that incorporates your personal perspective and takes into account the definitions provided by the athletes you have interviewed.

Step 3 (50pts).This step is an extension of Step 1 and Step 2 where you were asked to interview three coaches and three athletes. This step requires you to write a detailed 3-5-page integrative summary and comparative analysis of your interviews that captures the similarities and differences in perspectives between the coaches and athletes that you have interviewed. In other words, what aspects of Mental Toughness were shared or agreed upon by the athletes and coaches and what aspects were different? Please be sure to describe, in your opinion, the factors that may have influenced the differences in perspective between the athletes and coaches. How do these similarities and differences relate to the literature. PLEASE REFER TO YOUR TEXT, and READINGS (i.e., gucciardi Semi structured interview.pdf ). Identify and describe several strategies that can be used to help develop mental toughness in these athletes.  Lastly, I would like for you to refine and provide a definition of Mental Toughness that incorporates your personal perspective and takes into account the definitions provided by the athletes and coaches that you have interviewed; clearly identify how your definition has evolved as a result of your coach and athlete interviews

Hair samples are a promising way of detecting hormones in a human being, which could provide a better and deeper understanding of various psychological disorders for example. Because of its ability to provide a long-term, month-by-month measure of systemic hormone exposure, hair analysis is becoming a useful and practical tool, capable of answering clinical questions that could previously not be answered by other tests.

This study would be largely based in the Biomarker Laboratory and would be exploring evaluating and optimising the procedures used to analyse naturally occurring hormones ( for example: testosterone, cortisol, estrogen and progesterone)  in hair as well as looking at potential confounds with the hair sample that may alter the recorded hormone concentrations.

Hair sample will be collected by visiting a barber shop that would agree that we can ask approximately 40 customers with already quite short hair (so the hair samples have a much better and “undisturbed” concentration of the naturally occurring hormones, as the closer to the scalp the fresher the hair is) to provide us with their hair sample. Every customer will be informed about our research with an debrief of the research plus an information sheet for every participant in plain English and asked to give us their consent through voluntarily signing the consent paper.
As we don’t investigate in this study about any differences between different populations or conditions of the participants these questions won’t be asked. Name, Gender and Age are the only questions that will be collected with the hair samples. As different genders have different concentrations of hormones (like Cortisol and Testosterone). The only exclusion is in cases were the participants is younger than 18 of age, which will be asked in the consent sheet (for more details please see the consent paper). After Consent the samples will be randomly numbered which will provide full anonymity.

This work is quite new as there is minimal hair sampling research overall and there is none (for our knowledge) that has done a comparison of the methods to this extent, as we will be using ELISA which is a different and much economic and faster method and would like to see if our method of ELISA will correlate with LC/MS, which would be the baseline.
As we want to look at all the naturally occurring and observable hormones, this is a unique opportunity and will at least increase the amount of data that this area lacks and expand our knowledge of this methodology and its validity.

Sheldon Cooper is a Caltech theoretical physicist who shares an apartment with his colleague and best friend, Leonard Hofstadter. Originally from East Texas, Sheldon started college at the age of 11, receiving his first Ph.D. at the age of 16. Sheldon was involved in numerous experiments as a child genius, such as his plan to provide free electricity for his hometown by building a nuclear reactor - a plan stopped by the government due to irresponsible storage of uranium. Sheldon claims to be the perfect human specimen feels that the world does not give realize Sheldon’s full potential. Sheldon is characterized by a strict adherence to routine, such as questioning Leonard on how regular he is; an overly intellectual personality; a lack of understanding of irony, sarcasm and humor; and a general lack of humility or empathy, the former of which is demonstrated in the fact that he has no problem voicing to his peers his admiration for his superior intellect. While Sheldon lacks these qualities, he does attempt to gain a better grasp of empathy and understanding humor and sarcasm.
History
Sheldon was born in Galveston, Texas to Mary Cooper, and was born at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in 1980. His father, George Cooper, died during Sheldon’s childhood. He has a twin sister named Missy and an older brother named George. Sheldon was raised according to his mother's Evangelical Christian beliefs. Meanwhile, he was forced to watch football by his father.
Sheldon was bullied a lot during his childhood, mostly because he constantly expressed intellectual superiority to his peers (as he does now.) While in grade school, Sheldon wrote papers entitled "A Proof That Algebraic Topology Can Never Have a Non-Self-Contradictory Set of Abelian Groups" and "A Rederivation of Maxwell’s Equations Regarding Electromagnetism". Sheldon entered college at the age of eleven, right after completing the fifth grade. When Sheldon was fourteen years old, he graduated college summa cum laude, began graduate school, and was the youngest person at the time to receive the Stevenson Award at "fourteen and a half." He received his first doctorate at the age of sixteen and he then spent four years on his second dissertation, before obtaining his current job.
Abnormal behaviors
Sheldon appears to have problems understanding societal laws at times. He has dropped objects out his window into traffic without any regard, in addition to breaking into buildings. He has also gone to various places, such as a kid's play-area, and even began working at the Cheesecake Factory without being granted permission. He has expertise with picking locks and disarming alarm systems. Furthermore, the Department of Homeland Security notifies his mother when he acts contrary to federal law. Homeland Security is familiar with him, and instead of arresting Sheldon after committing potential crimes, simply inform his mother and let her deal with him
The most notable feature of Sheldon's personality is his refusal to sit anywhere other than his designated spot on the far left cushion of the couch in his apartment, which he considers the perfect location in the apartment. Sheldon regularly reproaches Penny and other people for sitting in his spot. Even disruptions to this location are enough to disturb him, although he did allow Penny to sit in his spot on one occasion. As well as his designated spot in the apartment, if Sheldon is ever in a different area where he is going to sit down, such as Penny's apartment, he has to choose the best sitting location based on such things as optimal television viewing, lighting, airflow, and cushion density.
